A feeding trial was conducted for 60 days to delineate the effect of different salinities on growth and metabolic responses in fingerlings of orange spotted grouper Epinephelus coioides (Hamilton, 1822). The grouper fingerlings (N=1050; Av. wt. 2.0±0.01 g) were distributed equally into seven treatments of varying salinities viz., 5±1‰ (T1), 10±1‰ (T2), 15±1‰ (T3), 20±1‰ (T4), 25±1‰ (T5), 30±1‰ (T6) and 35±1‰ (T7) in triplicates. Fingerlings were fed with commercial diet containing 45% crude protein and 10% lipid. Results from the experiment concluded that growth performance of fingerlings of T4 group was better with minimum metabolic enzyme activity. The liver glycogen was significantly lower (p<0.05) in T4 group. Oxygen consumption rate (OCR) was recorded maximum at 15±1‰ and was significantly reduced for the fingerlings maintained at high salinity (p<0.05) from 20±1 to 35±1‰. Orange spotted grouper fingerlings maintained at salinity of 20±1‰ confirmed that, the animal spent less metabolic energy for maintaining the ionic balance at this optimum salinity compared to other salinities and it was reflected in better growth performance with minimum OCR and metabolic enzyme activities.

Abstract The effect of Enterococcus faecium CCM7420 (EF) - enterocin-producing and probiotic strain of rabbit origin, Eleutherococcus senticosus extract (ES) and their combination (ES+EF) was determined on selected bacteria in faeces and caecum content, leukocytes phagocytosis, blood biochemistry and growth performance. Ninety-six weaned rabbits were divided into 3 experimental (ES, EF, ES+EF) and control group (CG). The rabbits in the groups ES and EF+ES were fed commercial diet enriched with E. senticosus extract (30 g/100 kg feed), rabbits in groups EF and CG were fed untreated diet. The rabbits in the EF and ES+EF groups were administered with an overnight culture of E. faecium CCM7420 strain (500 μl/animal/day into water, 109 CFU/ml). The treatment period lasted 21 days. The microbiological examinations in faecal samples confirmed the presence of E. faecium CCM7420 strain. In groups EF and ES+EF, the reduction of faecal coliforms, Pseudomonas-like sp., Clostridium-like sp. and S. aureus was recorded. Leucocyte phagocytosis significantly increased in all experimental groups (P<0.0001) compared to CG. The lowest GPx values were measured in the ES+EF group. Higher total protein, triglycerides and calcium concentrations were detected in experimental groups compared to CG. The cholesterol concentration decreased in the ES group. The highest average daily gain was recorded in EF group; in ES+EF the better feed conversion ratio and no mortality was recorded. These results indicated that the dietary supplementation with the E. faecium CCM7420 and E. senticosus extract stimulate the leukocytes phagocytosis and reduces the potential pathogens in rabbits digestive tract without oxidative stress and improve the growth performance.

This research evaluated the influence of yeast and zinc on growth performance and metabolic responses of Nile tilapia. Diets were formulated to contain 32.0% digestible protein and 3,240 kcal DE/kg diet and the following autolized yeast (%):zinc (mg/kg)relationships: 0.0:0.0; 0.0:79.5; 2.0:0.0; 0.795:79.5; 2.0:200; 4.0:400; 6.0:600; 12.0:1,200 and 14.0:1,400. It was used 135 fingerlings (7.27 ± 0.19 g), distributed in a complete random design in 27 50-L aquaria and they were fed ad libitum four times a day for 128 days. It was evaluated growth performance and metabolic responses, weight gain, apparent feed conversion; protein efficiency and survival rate; percentage of protein, ether extract, dry weight and ashes in the muscle and in the bones; ammonia concentration and kinetic activity of alkaline phosphatase in the liver; ammonia, kinetic activity of alkaline phosphatase, urea and lipids in the plasma and; minerals in plasma, in the liver and in the bones of the fish. High levels of yeast and zinc in the diet impaired growth performance and metabolic responses of the fish. Autolized yeast at the level of 2.0% determines the best growth performance. Levels higher than 6.0% of autolized yeast and 600 mg zinc in the diets impair growth performance and lipid metabolism in fish and levels higher than 4.0% of autolized yeast and 400 mg zinc/kg in the diet impair mineral metabolism.

Experiments were conducted to investigate possible metabolic correlates of the unusual ingestive behavior of hamsters after food deprivation. A hypothesis of metabolic refractoriness predicts that hamsters, unlike rats, should not show changes in plasma metabolic fuels, adipose tissue, or liver after fasting and subsequent refeeding. This hypothesis was discredited by findings that fasted hamsters, like rats, have increased plasma ketones and free fatty acids and decreased liver glycogen. On refeeding, hamsters showed rapid reversal of these changes, with supranormal glycogen content and apparent fatty acid synthesis in liver. Additional studies examined the metabolic responses of hamsters and rats to exogenous insulin or glucose administration. Incorporation of 3H2O into liver fatty acids was greatly elevated in rats by both insulin and glucose, but in hamsters only insulin was effective. Some of these metabolic differences may help our understanding of the unusual refractoriness of hamster food intake to various stimuli.

Rats fed 10 gm of a commercial diet for 4–5 weeks and fasted for 24 hours showed less rise in liver glycogen and blood sugar levels in response to the injection of epinephrine than did ad libitum-fed-fasted rats. Gastrocnemius glycogen levels were found to be higher in underfed-fasted animals and fell to the same extent as in ad libitum fed-fasted animals when epinephrine was given. Blood lactate concentrations, however, rose less markedly in the underfed-fasted group. This may have been at least partly responsible for the diminished rise in hepatic glycogen and blood sugar.

Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate the relative bioavailability (RBV) of l-Lys sulfate in comparison to l-Lys HCl based on the growth performance response from approximately 26 to 48 kg and from approximately 68 to 114 kg. The effect of Lys source on blood urea nitrogen (BUN), digestibility of dry matter (DM) and sulfur (S), as well as carcass characteristics was determined. A total of 280 growing pigs (25.9 ± 0.25 kg BW) were randomly assigned to one of seven dietary treatments in 56 pens, with five pigs per pen. The diets included a Lys-deficient basal diet (65% of requirement) and the basal diet supplemented with three graded levels of Lys (75%, 85%, and 95% of requirement), as either l-Lys HCl (78.8% Lys purity) or l-Lys sulfate (54.6% Lys purity). The experiment lasted for 112 d, with four dietary phases: Phase 1 lasted for 4 wk (BW: 25.9 to 47.5 kg), Phase 2 lasted for 3 wk (common commercial diet as washout period), Phase 3 lasted for 5 wk (BW: 67.5 to 98.2 kg), and Phase 4 lasted for 3 or 4 wk to reach an average market weight of 114.2 kg. Fresh fecal samples of pigs fed the highest levels of Lys (both Lys sources) were collected on 7 to 10 days after the beginning of Phase 3 for digestibility assay. Blood samples were collected on day 21 and day 81 to determine BUN. Carcass data were collected at a commercial packing plant. Data were analyzed using PROC GLM of SAS (9.4) according to a completely randomized design with pen as the experimental unit. The RBV of l-Lys sulfate was determined using the multiple regression slope-ratio method. Increasing levels of Lys, independent of source, increased (P &lt; 0.05) BW, ADG, and feed efficiency during Phases 1, 3, and 4; market BW increased linearly (P &lt; 0.01) and backfat and BUN decreased linearly (P &lt; 0.01). Lysine source had no impact on growth performance, carcass characteristics, BUN, or digestibility of S and DM. The RBV of l-Lys sulfate compared with l-Lys HCl was also not different based upon ADG or G:F during Phase 1, 3, or 4. These data suggest that the bioavailability of Lys in l-Lys sulfate and l-Lys HCl is at least equivalent for growing–finishing pigs.
