Objective: The objective of this work was to identify, through the questionnaire, favorable points and potentially impeding points for the purchase of Smart Mobb® as an auxiliary mobility technology for people with visual impairments. Methods: The questionnaire was applied at the Dorina Nowill Foundation for the Blind, an institution specialized in the care and rehabilitation of visually impaired people. The interview consisted of questions about the socioeconomic profile; Social; technological, in the context of assistive technologies; and health, including the individual and the difficulties he faces on a daily basis using his visual impairment. Results: Eight candidates were interviewed. The results indicate that Smart Mobb® has features that display the identity with respect to the people who study, showing inconsistency only in terms of the estimated average monthly value for sale and that these items are available for payment. Conclusion: It was found that it exists or desires, on the part of users who demand as much solutions in assisted technologies that carry greater technological content, and that appear as a solution proposal for the problem of urban mobility. With regard to price, most respondents are willing to pay an average monthly percentage below the minimum stipulated for the purchase of the Smart Mobb® electronic cane, or to set up a potential impediment to adherence

The chapter focuses on the development of tools containing the basics of Braille and methods that help the people to manage this type of language to enhance the strength of collective thinking in educational statements, taking into account key background; this is why the development of tools containing the basic aspects of the Braille system and the necessary methods to enable the subject to master this type of language, enhancing the strength of collective thinking at the educational level, are so important. However, one of the main challenges in learning Braille is to engage the individual in literacy processes, which is why the creation of learning cards is proposed, to enable people to learn Braille.

A diverse array of assistive technologies have been developed to help Visually Impaired People (VIP) face many basic daily autonomy challenges. Inertial measurement unit sensors, on the other hand, have been used for navigation, guidance, and localization but especially for full body motion tracking due to their low cost and miniaturization, which have allowed the estimation of kinematic parameters and biomechanical analysis for different field of applications. The aim of this work was to present a comprehensive approach of assistive technologies for VIP that include inertial sensors as input, producing results on the comprehension of technical characteristics of the inertial sensors, the methodologies applied, and their specific role in each developed system. The results show that there are just a few inertial sensor-based systems. However, these sensors provide essential information when combined with optical sensors and radio signals for navigation and special application fields. The discussion includes new avenues of research, missing elements, and usability analysis, since a limitation evidenced in the selected articles is the lack of user-centered designs. Finally, regarding application fields, it has been highlighted that a gap exists in the literature regarding aids for rehabilitation and biomechanical analysis of VIP. Most of the findings are focused on navigation and obstacle detection, and this should be considered for future applications.

Visual impairment burdens the people heavily in today’s fast-moving culture. Although there are several measures for this impairment, many people skip such chances in fear of their economic condition. In view of helping those people, a sophisticated stick is designed using sensors like ultrasonic sensor, IR sensor and Arduino ICs. Electronically designed walking stick helps to trace the locations using GPS module and to avoid collisions through detection of objects at a certain range of distance from the person in all directions. Sensor placed beneath the bottom of the stick enables the identification of pits/hindrances on the ground. The visually impaired person will be alerted with a voice message generated using the voice recorder which records the response of all the sensors operating in different tracks. In this paper, GSM and sensors together have initiated the role of smart walking stick in the life of several human kinds.

In today’s growing world where technology advancing into every aspect of our lives, it has changed the way we go about our life. With all this technology in hand, improvements can be made in various ways to help the society. Focusing on the transportation industry, it has seen an exponential technological growth with the introduction of Applications and services which provide the people with an easy option of travel by booking Cabs which will arrive at their doorstep. Some of the leading apps in this category are Ola, Uber and so many more. However, these apps cater only to the common demographic of people/users. India is a country with over 13 million visually impaired individuals out of which the state of Karnataka has 264,170 people according to the Karnataka Census of 2011. With all these apps and technologies being available to us, we can provide a means of easy and safe transport to these impaired individuals. E-Car Savegalu is an attempt at providing these transportation services to the visually impaired in the form of an application which is intuitive and easy use to book cabs. This concept has a significant role to play in the society by helping a good number of visually impaired people in terms of travel.

The vision can be used to recognize images and to improve mental pictures of environments. Visually impaired people feel a lack of aid for their independent or facilitated urban mobility, which can be achieved with the use of mobile devices and cartographic tools using audiovisual outputs. This work raises issues about urban mobility for the accessibility of visually impaired people in areas still unexplored by them, it uses cartographic technologies in electronic devices. For a preview of the test area located in Monte Carmelo (MG), a tactile model was used to form the first image of the eight volunteers. Results were obtained through research with not blind and blind individuals, it validated the use of áreas’s mobile registration prototype positioning in field or not, when the coordinates from the objects are known for registration. The results indicate that both the tactile model and the audiovisual prototype can be used by blind and non-blind people. Above all, the prototype proved to be a viable and adequate option for decision making in urban environments. New ways of presenting data to blind or otherwise blind people can still be studied.

We have surveyed the existing solutions meant for autonomous mobility for the visually impaired people. In this paper, we have proposed a novel structure, Smart Shoes with sensors installed in them to control an outwardly debilitated individual smoothly and to alarm him/her of the impediments that lay in front of him in his way. The structure is meant to build up a simple to utilise processing power of Arduino in conjunction with the object detection capability of ultrasonic sensor to oblige the extraordinary needs, used to manage the individual coextending the highlights of the Smart Shoes.

Due to the ever increasing number of blind and visually impaired people in the world, there has been a great amount of research dedicated to the design of assistive technologies to support them. The various assistive technologies apply different techniques including laser, ultrasonic sensors and image processing. Autonomous navigation is a significant challenge for the visually impaired, it makes life uncomfortable for them and poses serious safety issues. In this paper we review the progress made so far in vision based systems and propose an approach for developing navigation aids through techniques used in other autonomous systems like self-driving vehicles. The proposed system uses a front camera to capture images and then produces commensurate guiding audio signals that allow the user freely move in their environment. An extra rear camera is included to allow the user to obtain more information about the scene. Care is taken however not to overload the user with information. The proposed method is tested both in indoor and outdoor scenes and is effective in notifying the user for any obstacles. The goal of this paper is to propose a model for and to develop subsystems for an intelligent, high performance, affordable and easy to use image based navigation aid for the visually impaired.

Diffusion of radio frequency identification (RFID) promises to boost the added value of assistive technologies for mobile users. Visually impaired people may benefit from RFID-based applications that support users in maintaining “spatial orientation” (Mann, 2004) through provision of information on where they are, and a description of what lies in their surroundings. To investigate this issue, we have integrated our development tool for mobile device, (namely: MADE, Bellotti, Berta, De Gloria, & Margarone, 2003), with a complete support for RFID tag detection, and implemented an RFID-enabled location-aware tour-guide. We have evaluated the guide in an . ecological context (fully operational application, real users, real context of use (Abowd & Mynatt, 2000)) during the EuroFlora 2006 international exhibition (EuroFlora). In this chapter, we describe the MADE enhancement to support RFID-based applications, present the main concepts of the interaction modalities we have designed in order to support visually impaired users, and discuss results from our field experience.
