Abstract Conventional flow-based two-phase upscaling for simulating the waterflooding process requires the calculations of upscaled two-phase parameters for each coarse interface or block. The whole procedure can be greatly time-consuming especially for large-scale reservoir models. To address this problem, flow-based two-phase upscaling techniques are combined with machine learning algorithms, in which the flow-based two-phase upscaling is needed only for a small fraction of coarse interfaces (or blocks), while the upscaled two-phase parameters for the rest of the coarse interfaces (or blocks) are directly provided by the machine learning algorithms instead of performing upscaling computation on each coarse interfaces (or blocks). The new two-phase upscaling workflow was tested for generic (left to right) flow problems using a 2D large-scale model. We observed similar accuracy for results using the machine learning assisted workflow compared with the results using full flow-based upscaling. And significant speedup (nearly 70) is achieved. The workflow developed in this work is one of the pioneering work in combining machine learning algorithm with the time-consuming flow-based two-phase upscaling method. It is a valuable addition to the existing multiscale techniques for subsurface flow simulation.

Abstract Traditional two-phase relative permeability upscaling requires the fine-scale two-phase flow simulation over the target regions/blocks. It can be very computationally expensive especially for cases with multiple (hundreds of) geological realizations (as commonly used in subsurface uncertainty quantification or optimization). In this paper, we develop a machine learning assisted relative permeability upscaling procedure, in which the full numerical upscaling is performed for only a portion of the coarse blocks, while the upscaled functions for the rest of the coarse blocks are calculated by the machine learning algorithm. The upscaling procedure was tested for generic (left to right) flow problems using 2D models for scenarios involving multiple realizations. Numerical results have shown that the coarse-scale simulation results using the newly developed machine learning assisted upscaling procedure are of similar accuracy to the coarse results using full numerical upscaling. Because the fine-scale numerical simulation is only performed for a small fraction of the model, significant speedup is achieved.

Purpose: The number of patients with alcohol-related problems is steadily increasing. A large-scale survey of alcohol-related problems has been conducted. However, studies that predict hazardous drinkers and identify which factors contribute to the prediction are limited. Thus, the purpose of this study was to predict hazardous drinkers and the severity of alcohol-related problems of patients using a deep learning algorithm based on a large-scale survey data.Materials and Methods: Datasets of National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey of South Korea (K-NHANES), a nationally representative survey for the entire South Korean population, were used to train deep learning and conventional machine learning algorithms. Datasets from 69,187 and 45,672 participants were used to predict hazardous drinkers and the severity of alcohol-related problems, respectively. Based on the degree of contribution of each variable to deep learning, it was possible to determine which variable contributed significantly to the prediction of hazardous drinkers. Results: Deep learning showed the higher performance than conventional machine learning algorithms. It predicted hazardous drinkers with an AUC (Area under the receiver operating characteristic curve) of 0.870 (Logistic regression: 0.858, Linear SVM: 0.849, Random forest classifier: 0.810, K-nearest neighbors: 0.740). Among 325 variables for predicting hazardous drinkers, energy intake was a factor showing the greatest contribution to the prediction, followed by carbohydrate intake. Participants were classified into Zone I, Zone II, Zone III, and Zone IV based on the degree of alcohol-related problems, showing AUCs of 0.881, 0.774, 0.853, and 0.879, respectively. Conclusion: Hazardous drinking groups could be effectively predicted and individuals could be classified according to the degree of alcohol-related problems using a deep learning algorithm. This algorithm could be used to screen people who need treatment for alcohol-related problems among the general population or hospital visitors.

The online English teaching system has certain requirements for the intelligent scoring system, and the most difficult stage of intelligent scoring in the English test is to score the English composition through the intelligent model. In order to improve the intelligence of English composition scoring, based on machine learning algorithms, this study combines intelligent image recognition technology to improve machine learning algorithms, and proposes an improved MSER-based character candidate region extraction algorithm and a convolutional neural network-based pseudo-character region filtering algorithm. In addition, in order to verify whether the algorithm model proposed in this paper meets the requirements of the group text, that is, to verify the feasibility of the algorithm, the performance of the model proposed in this study is analyzed through design experiments. Moreover, the basic conditions for composition scoring are input into the model as a constraint model. The research results show that the algorithm proposed in this paper has a certain practical effect, and it can be applied to the English assessment system and the online assessment system of the homework evaluation system algorithm system.

In the digital microfluidic experiments, the droplet characteristics and flow patterns are generally identified and predicted by the empirical methods, which are difficult to process a large amount of data mining. In addition, due to the existence of inevitable human invention, the inconsistent judgment standards make the comparison between different experiments cumbersome and almost impossible. In this paper, we tried to use machine learning to build algorithms that could automatically identify, judge, and predict flow patterns and droplet characteristics, so that the empirical judgment was transferred to be an intelligent process. The difference on the usual machine learning algorithms, a generalized variable system was introduced to describe the different geometry configurations of the digital microfluidics. Specifically, Buckingham’s theorem had been adopted to obtain multiple groups of dimensionless numbers as the input variables of machine learning algorithms. Through the verification of the algorithms, the SVM and BPNN algorithms had classified and predicted the different flow patterns and droplet characteristics (the length and frequency) successfully. By comparing with the primitive parameters system, the dimensionless numbers system was superior in the predictive capability. The traditional dimensionless numbers selected for the machine learning algorithms should have physical meanings strongly rather than mathematical meanings. The machine learning algorithms applying the dimensionless numbers had declined the dimensionality of the system and the amount of computation and not lose the information of primitive parameters.

Abstract Fluid properties are key factors for predicting single well productivity, well test interpretation and oilfield recovery prediction, which directly affect the success of ODP program design. The most accurate and direct method of acquisition is underground sampling. However, not every well has samples due to technical reasons such as excessive well deviation or high cost during the exploration stage. Therefore, analogies or empirical formulas have to be adopted to carry out research in many cases. But a large number of oilfield developments have shown that the errors caused by these methods are very large. Therefore, how to quickly and accurately obtain fluid physical properties is of great significance. In recent years, with the development and improvement of artificial intelligence or machine learning algorithms, their applications in the oilfield have become more and more extensive. This paper proposed a method for predicting crude oil physical properties based on machine learning algorithms. This method uses PVT data from nearly 100 wells in Bohai Oilfield. 75% of the data is used for training and learning to obtain the prediction model, and the remaining 25% is used for testing. Practice shows that the prediction results of the machine learning algorithm are very close to the actual data, with a very small error. Finally, this method was used to apply the preliminary plan design of the BZ29 oilfield which is a new oilfield. Especially for the unsampled sand bodies, the fluid physical properties prediction was carried out. It also compares the influence of the analogy method on the scheme, which provides potential and risk analysis for scheme design. This method will be applied in more oil fields in the Bohai Sea in the future and has important promotion value.

Abstract Fluidelastic instability (FEI) in tube arrays has been studied extensively experimentally and theoretically for the last 50 years, due to its potential to cause significant damage in short periods. Incidents similar to those observed at San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station indicate that the problem is not yet fully understood, probably due to the large number of factors affecting the phenomenon. In this study, a new approach for the analysis and interpretation of FEI data using machine learning (ML) algorithms is explored. FEI data for both single and two-phase flows have been collected from the literature and utilized for training a machine learning algorithm in order to either provide estimates of the reduced velocity (single and two-phase) or indicate if the bundle is stable or unstable under certain conditions (two-phase). The analysis included the use of logistic regression as a classification algorithm for two-phase flow problems to determine if specific conditions produce a stable or unstable response. The results of this study provide some insight into the capability and potential of logistic regression models to analyze FEI if appropriate quantities of experimental data are available.

The machine learning algorithms are capable of managing multi-dimensional data under the dynamic environment. Despite its so many vital features, there are some challenges to overcome. The machine learning algorithms still requires some additional mechanisms or procedures for predicting a large number of new classes with managing privacy. The deficiencies show the reliable use of a machine learning algorithm relies on human experts because raw data may complicate the learning process which may generate inaccurate results. So the interpretation of outcomes with expertise in machine learning mechanisms is a significant challenge in the machine learning algorithm. The machine learning technique suffers from the issue of high dimensionality, adaptability, distributed computing, scalability, the streaming data, and the duplicity. The main issue of the machine learning algorithm is found its vulnerability to manage errors. Furthermore, machine learning techniques are also found to lack variability. This paper studies how can be reduced the computational complexity of machine learning algorithms by finding how to make predictions using an improved algorithm.
