Abstract Entrained liquids in produced natural gas introduce flow-prediction errors in gas metering; hence there is a need to correct flowmeters’ response to these errors. The development of improved wet gas flow correlations is an effective means of optimizing the predictive capabilities of these meters. This study reviews selected wet gas flow correlations, assesses their merits and demerits, and offers novel options and possibilities for developing highly optimized wet gas correlations for industrial applications. Prospects and possibilities for developing highly optimized wet gas flow correlations are also suggested in this paper, resulting in a significant expansion of the use of wet gas flow meters. These possibilities will include model development and experimental investigation of wet gas flows under relatively high-pressure operating conditions.

Summary Liquid hydrocarbon quantity optimization is among key technological indicators in the gas condensate fields development. To achieve it one needs to select and maintain optimal well-operating conditions. In this case, multiphase flow measurements are prioritized as an important optimization tool. The article presents a proven record of implementing the technology of instrumentalised virtual multiphase flow metering in the wells of the Vostochno-Makarovskoye gas condensate field to increase the efficiency of liquid hydrocarbon production. Virtual flow metering technologies that use modeling methods and adapt models to actual well-operating parameters aiming at determining well production rates are becoming increasingly popular. At that, the quality of the data at the model input does not often guarantee a qualitative determination of multiphase flow parameters. This article presents a track record of building a virtual multiphase flow meter based on single-phase streamer flow meters mounted on gas wells. Venturi flow meters were used. A series of well tests were conducted in various modes. To configure the streamer model, additional tuning studies were conducted on the separator. While testing the wells, the results of constructing a streamer model were verified by nodal analysis.

In this paper, we evaluate the method of finding the relative error of gas flow meters taking into account the influence coefficients. A literature analysis was carried out, which showed that flow meters are used at oil and gas enterprises, which show its metrological characteristic, showing specific values of gas flow in operating conditions. Various types of gas flow meters are considered, with a description of the quality indicators of the devices. An additional error was investigated depending on changes in operating conditions. The calculations of the relative error of the meter taking into account the limiting values of the additional errors indicated in the technical documentation, as well as calculations taking into account the coefficients of influence under operating conditions. Based on the obtained values of the influence coefficients, graphs were constructed on which the effect of temperature and pressure on the error was determined. The article provides tabular values of the influence coefficients for petroleum gas, a conclusion is drawn on the applicability of this method.Oil and gas industry have a great influence on development of national economy in our country. Oil and gas have a leading position in energy industry and they are more effective and energy-intense in comparison with other natural substances.

Wet gas flow is a typical two-phase flow with low liquid fractions. As differential pressure signal contains rich information of flow parameters in two-phase flow metering, a new method is proposed for wet gas flow metering based on differential pressure (DP) and blind source separation (BSS) techniques. DP signals are from a couple of slotted orifices and the BSS method is based on time-frequency analysis. A good relationship between the liquid flow rate and the characteristic quantity of the separated signal is established, and a differential pressure correlation for slotted orifice is applied to calculate the gas flow rate. The calculation results are good with 90% relative errors less than ±10%. The results also show that BSS is an effective method to extract liquid flow rate from DP signals of wet gas flow, and to analysis different interactions among the total DP readings.

Seawater flue gas desulfurization (SWFGD) is considered to be a viable solution for coastal and naval applications; however, this process has several drawbacks, including its corrosive absorbent; low vapor loading capacity since the solubility of sulfur oxides (SOx) in seawater is lower than that of limestone used in conventional methods; high seawater flowrate; and large equipment size. This has prompted process industries to search for possible advanced and intensified configurations to enhance the performance of SWFGD processes to attain a higher vapor loading capacity, lower seawater flowrate, and smaller equipment size. This paper presents an overview of new developments as well as advanced and intensified configurations of SWFGD processes via process modifications such as modification and optimization of operating conditions, improvement of spray and vapor distributors, adding internal columns, using square or rectangular shape, using a pre-scrubber, multiple scrubber feed; process integration such as combined treatment of SOx and other gases, and waste heat recovery; and process intensification such as the use of electrified sprays, swirling gas flow, and rotating packed beds. A summary of the industrial applications, engineering issues, environmental impacts, challenges, and perspectives on the research and development of advanced and intensified SWFGD processes is presented.

Multipath ultrasonic gas flow meters are to be considered as newcomers among flow meters for large, high pressure gas flows. Although the advantages of this type of meters are many and obvious, the metering community is still hesitating to go for it mainly because of lack of experience. The objective of this paper is to present the experience of Statoil after more than six years experience with multipath ultrasonic gas flow meters. Our experience includes laboratory testing and operation in the field for a variety of designs and dimensions. This paper presents the accuracy achieved by such meters including comparison between ultrasonic meters and orifice metering systems in operation, the unique possibilities that this type of meter offers for on-line verification of performance and installation effects. Of particular interest should be noted that in the vicinity of low-noise control valves, such meters could stop functioning completely if no precautions are taken.

Wet gas flow measurement is becoming vital to the natural gas production industry. New wells with marginal outputs cannot justify gas-liquid separation equipment and must transfer gas which contains some liquid volume. The flow measurement device on each well dictates the allocation earnings and must therefore provide gas flow measurement as accurately as possible. Several types of differential pressure based flowmeters are currently being used in wet gas flow measurement. DP based flowmeters share many performance characteristics in wet gas applications. However, studies have also found that there can be significant differences in the correlations between meter over reading and liquid content depending of the type of DP meter being tested. Emerson Process Management conducted a series of wet gas tests on a standard orifice plate, a V-Cone, a Venturi and two Rosemount conditioning orifice plates at the National Engineering Laboratory in Scotland (NEL). Previously, tests of conditioning orifice plates in wet gas were conducted at the Colorado Engineering Experiment Station, Inc. (CEESI). The work described in this paper is aimed at investigating the similarities and differences in the performance of these meter types in wet gas flows. Comparisons of these data to those from previous studies on the meter types tested are presented. Also, as a result of these studies, a general method for correcting the over-reading of DP-based, wet gas flowmeters using process measurements and the flow computing capabilities of modern multivariable DP transmitters was developed and is presented.
