Argumentative English writing is an important touchstone of Chinese advanced English learners' English competence. Herbert Paul Grice's "cooperative principles" (including maxims of quantity, quality, relation and manner), as "lubricant" of human communication, would help build up harmonious and friendly atmosphere for the communication between the Chinese writers and their target readers, thereby providing them, as well as their instructors, with feasible evaluative criteria for judging the effectiveness of their argumentative English writing.

AbstractIt is noticeable that the academic papers written by Chinese English learners are lacking in academic features largely due to their poor ability to use nominalization. Therefore, the instruction of nominalization in an academic English writing course is badly needed. The author conducted one-semester-long instruction of nominalization to 90 non-English majors under the guidance of the production-oriented approach (POA). This research demonstrated how to apply POA, specifically, the enabling procedure to the teaching of nominalization. By triangulating the data of students’ interviews, learning journals and written output, and the data of 4 teachers’ class observations and interviews, this study found that the accurate application of the three criteria of effective enabling contributed to the improvement of the quantity and quality of nominalization in academic writing.

Based on contrastive analysis and computer-aided error analysis, this paper uses qualitative and quantitative methods to explore word form errors committed by Chinese non-English majors in their writing, collected in Chinese Learner English Corpus (CLEC). The aim is to offer English learners some help in the methods to improve their English writing proficiency and yield some suggestions on English language teaching. The main findings are as follows: (1) the word form errors account for 29.42% of the total language errors; (2) there is a negative correlation between word form errors and writing quality; (3) there is a significant difference in word form errors committed by college learners of different writing ability. In the end, the reasons for word form errors are analyzed and some pedagogical suggestions are put forward.

A widespread assumption in the contrastive rhetoric field is the linearity/circularity dichotomy which suggests that eastern countries writing are characterized by indirection. This study examines the rhetorical preferences of Persian writing. A total of 320 essays taken from forty sophomore students studying English translation were analyzed. They were supposed to write an essay for eight weeks in different genres. To determine Persian writing style models by Chesterman, (1998) and Monroy and Scheu (1997) are used. Texts are analyzed in order to fit into one of the categories Chesterman has classified. Results indicate that Persian students, alike English learners, prefer directness in text and paragraph organization. In other words, they try to discuss their thesis statement directly at the beginning of their writing in order to support it in the rest of the paragraphs. Moreover, an examination of students essay reveal that the rhetorical preference of Persian language is linearity, the style English writing follows.

It has been widely acknowledged that exemplification plays a very significant role in foreign language learning. Many studies have been conducted on dictionary examples, but little attention has been paid to how examples can assist a specific group of foreign learners engaged in a specific learning activity. The present study is intended to fill this gap by investigating how to optimize examples in English learners’ dictionaries to help Chinese learners with writing in English. The functional theory of lexicography will be employed in this study. This investigation will be carried out in two stages. The first one consists in identifying the lexicographic needs of foreign learners engaged in the task of English writing and consulting dictionary examples. The second stage is a demonstration of some proposals for exemplification in learners’ dictionaries through model articles. The purpose of this study is to give new insights into exemplification in learners’ dictionaries for future lexicographic research and practice.

This study evaluated the narrative and expository English writing corpus from 20 Chinese English learners at three linguistic levels: the use of literate words (elaborated noun phrases, conjunctions, adverbs, and mental state verbs), the degree of sentence complexity, and the use of subordinate clauses (nominal, adverbial and relative clauses). Results first showed a genre effect on literate word use but not on utterance length and clausal density. Specifically, there were more elaborated noun phrases and conjunctions in expository texts, but more adverbs in narrative texts. Results also revealed a genre effect on the use of relative clauses but not on other clauses. Finally, a strong correlation between literate word use and the production of complex syntax was found after controlling for the effects of genre. These results highlight the need for genre-dependent writing instruction to make students aware of the different language resources expected across genres as specific contexts of communication.

English learning is often thought of as words, grammar and sentence patterns, or as a combination of foreign languages and cultures. In fact, rhetoric, as an English writing skill, is of great significance to English writing. Many people think that the application of rhetoric in English writing will only make the article mechanical and rigid. Therefore, many English learners pay less attention to rhetoric in the process of English learning. Flexible use of various rhetorical devices can make the article more vivid, so English learners should pay attention to the study of western rhetoric. This paper will analyze English writing from the perspective of western rhetoric.

English Writing for Academic Purposes (EWAP) seems daunting for higher education students in the Indonesian context. Genuinely, the ability of EWAP is one of the study skills required in the academic field. Preliminary research has shown that EWAP materials have not been identified based on students’ needs. This study focuses on the students’ need analysis of the EWAP materials, including confirming the quality of the task-based material design that enhances the students’ skills of the EWAP. The study used the educational research and development method, involving non-English learners from a private college in Indonesia. Researchers used the test, the semi-structured interview, and the questionnaire as instruments. The observation was also carried out to describe implementing the task-based material design of the EWAP. The results indicate that students need task-based material as an authentic EWAP material that focuses on learning to communicate through interaction. It also gives them the ability to focus not just on the use of languages but also on the learning process itself. The task-based EWAP materials have a significant influence on the development of students’ writing skills. As a result, this approach is well suited to foster a learning desire to write in a context-approximately as a means of expressing their intentions. Besides, the study’s findings show that students were very enthusiastic about engaging in the learning process.
