The effect of boron (B) and molybdenum (Mo) foliar fertilization on `Spineless Beauty' zucchini (Cucurbita sp.) fruit yield was studied in Nigua, San Cristobal, Dominican Republic. Field trials were conducted in a loamy clay soil containing 0.3 parts per million (ppm) of B and no detectable amounts of Mo (detection limit 0.1 ppm). Zucchini was direct-seeded at a distance of 1 m between rows and 0.5 m within rows. Fertilization (except B and Mo applications) and other production practices were implemented as recommended. A randomized complete-block design with a factorial arrangement (0, 1, 2, and 3 kg B and 0, 0.1, and 0.2 kg Mo/ha) with four replications was utilized. Experimental units consisted of five plants. Fruits were harvested every other day during 20 days, starting 40 days after crop emergence. Yield data was submitted to analysis of variance. Significant B and Mo rate interactions were found. Maximum zucchini yields were achieved when the combination of 1.5 kg B and 0.1 kg Mo/ha was applied. Combinations containing 3 kg B/ha were toxic to zucchini, reducing yields in nearly 20% as compared to untreated plants.

Zucchini (Cucurbita sp.) fruit yield response to zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), and iron (Fe) foliar fertilization was determined in field trials conducted in a loamy clay soil in Nigua, San Cristobal, Dominican Republic. The soil had Zn, Mn, and Fe contents of 1.2, 8, and 2 parts per million (ppm), respectively. `Spineless Beauty' zucchini was direct-seeded at a distance of 1 m between rows and 0.5 m within rows. Except for Zn, Mn, and Fe fertilization, the crop was grown according to recommended practices. Experimental units contained five plants. A randomized complete-block design with a factorial arrangement (3 × 3 × 3) with four replications was utilized. Micronutrient rates were 0, 1, and 3 kg·ha–1 for Zn; 0, 3, and 6 kg·ha–1 for Mn; and 0, 3, and 6 kg·ha–1 for Fe. Total rates were divided in two 50% rate applications, sprayed in aqueous solution to the crop leaves 15 and 30 days after emergence. Fruit harvest began 40 days after crop emergence and was performed every other day during 20 days. Resulting data was subjected to analysis of variance. There were significant Zn, Mn, and Fe interactions, and thus micronutrient combinations were considered as individual treatments. Treatment means were separated with the lsd 5% test. Zucchini plants treated with a combination of 3 kg Zn/ha, 3 kg Mn/ha, and 3 kg Fe/ha produced fruit yields 31.5% higher than control plants. Combinations including higher Mn and Fe rates failed to further increase zucchini yields.

Treatment with short-chain alcohols such as methanol and ethanol have been found to stimulate the performance of a number of crops. Container experiments were conducted in the Dominican Republic to determine the effect of methanol and nitrogen (N) treatments on the yield of cilantro (Coriandrum sativum). Plants were individually grown in plastic containers (15 × 15 cm) filled with loamy clay soil (4.3% organic matter) fertilized at planting with 20, 40, 60, and 80 kg N/ha. Methanol was sprayed in aqueous solutions (0%, 5%, 10%, and 15 %) when plants reached the three true leaf stage. A randomized complete-block design with a factorial arrangement and five replications was utilized. Cilantro plants were harvested 40 days after emergence and shoot fresh and dry weight were determined. Resulting data was subjected to analysis of variance and regression analysis. No significant nitrogen and methanol interactions were detected. In the range of rates tested in this study, methanol did not significantly influence cilantro shoot fresh or dry weight. Cilantro yields increased when N rates were increased from 20 to 40 kg per ha, reaching a plateau at higher N rates.

ABSTRACT There is little understanding about ecological interference of weeds in direct-seeded rice. To get estimates of economic thresholds of two weeds in direct seeded rice, two-year field trials were conducted at research area of College of Agriculture, University of Sargodha, Punjab-Pakistan. Treatments included 0, 22, 44, 66 and 88 plants m-2 densities of each of Echinochloa colona and Digera arvensis laid out in randomized complete block design. Augmented densities of E. colona (0, 22, 44, 66 and 88 weed plants m-2) enhanced its plant dry biomass up to 348 and 353%; and relative competitive index maximally to 80 and 77% in years 2015 and 2016, respectively. While the corresponding increases in plant dry weight and relative competitive index of D. arvensis were 367 and 360% and 79 and 82%. The enhancement in N (up to 258 & 257 %), P (up to 220 & 232%) and K (up to 293 & 301%) uptake in years 2015 and 2016, respectively were made by E. Colona whereas the corresponding increases in N, P and K assimilation by D. arvensis were as far as 265 & 257%, 238 & 233% and 305 & 298%, respectively. The declines in growth and yield of rice were observed in response to growing number of both the weeds. Rice grain yield losses ranged between 9.8 to 80% and 28 to 80% by E. Colona and D. arvensis. The economic thresholds of false amaranth and jungle rice were estimated to be 1.6-1.4 plants m-2 and 2.2-2.6 plants m-2, respectively.

Abstract Variability among experimental plots may be a relevant problem in field genotype experiments, especially when a large number of entries are involved. Four field trials on 24 durum wheat genotypes were conducted in 2013/14 in order to evaluate the efficiency of Incomplete Block, Alpha and Augmented designs in comparison with the traditional Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). The results showed that the RCBD can be replaced by an Alpha design, which provides better control of variability among the experimental units when the number of treatments to be tested in an experiment exceeds twenty. The ranking of the genotypes across the four designs was not constant.

Boro rice (grown in winter under irrigated condition) contributes to the major portion of rice production (over 50%) in Bangladesh. Binadhan-17 is a green super rice developed by BINA which requires 30% less nitrogenous fertilizer and water which is grown in aman season (primely produced under rainfed). Due to it’s increasing popularity and adoption rice growers are keen to cultivate it in boro season also. Taking account of the above situation, two field trials were conducted at Magura during November 2019 to May 2020 to investigate the effect of variety, sowing dates and their interaction. Factorial RCBD (Randomized Complete Block Design) was applied for experimentation. Two rice varieties: Binadhan-17 (V1), BRRI dhan58 (V2) and three sowing times: 30th November (T1), 10th December (T2), 20th December (T3) were used as treatments. 35 days old seedlings were transplanted in main field. Relevant agronomic and morphological data were statistically analyzed through Statistix 10.0. Combined effect of the above factors at farm exposed that, T1×V1 required longest days (159.33 days) to mature. but, comparatively short life cycle (149.97 days) was observed by T3×V2. Maximum grain was yielded (7.70 t/ha) by T2×V1 and minimum (5.74 t/ha) by T1×V1 treatment combination. Outcomes of on station revealed that, T1×V1 needed more days (158.00 days) to mature; conversely, alike duration was noted with T2×V2 (147.20 days) and T3×V2 (145.43 days) which matured quite earlier. T2×V1 produced the highest grain yield (7.41 t/ha) and T1×V2 the lowest (5.94 t/ha). Our results indicate that, planting of Binadhan-17 on 10th December may give insect-disease free grains with optimum yield in context of Magura region. Farmers will be financially benefited if they cultivate this variety in the boro season in lieu of aman; due to higher yield

The experiment was conducted in the Dekarhaor of Noagaon village under South Sunamganj Upazila of Sunamganj district during November 2017 to February 2018 to observe the effect of nutrients management on growth and yield of cauliflower hybrids. Two Hybrids namely ShiraGiku (V1) and Rupali (V2), and four combinations of nutrients, viz. (i) recommended rate of N-P-K-S-Zn-B @ 180-80-180-28-4.5-2.1 kg ha-1(F1), (ii) F1 + 25% N-P-K- S-Zn-B of F1 (F2), (iii) F1 – 25% N-P-K-S-Zn-B of F1 (F3), and (iv)  cow dung @ 10 t ha-1 (F4)  was conducted in a factorial randomized complete block design (RCBD) and replicated thrice. Plant height (cm), numbers of leaves plant-1, leaf length (cm) and leaf breadth (cm), and spreading diameter (cm) were collected at 15 days intervals, while the yield data were recorded at harvest. The parameters were significantly varied due to hybrids and fertilizers packages. Higher gross yield (42.52tha-1) was found in Shira Giku and lower (42.12 t ha-1) from Rupali. Higher curd yield of 25.17 t ha-1 was obtained in Shira Giku than Rupali (9.61 t ha-1). The highest gross yield of 44.45 t ha-1 was obtained when the crop was treated with cowdung @ 10 t ha-1 followed by recommended fertilizer rate (F1). The curd yield of 18.19 t ha-1 was obtained with 25% less than recommended fertilizer rate of application (F3). The highest gross yield of 52.93 t ha-1 was obtained in V1F1 combination and the lowest of 30.10t ha-1in V2 F1. Results revealed that the Hybrid ShiraGiku with recommended dose of fertilizer (180-80-180-28-4.5-2.1 kg ha-1N-P-K-S-Zn-B) performed the best in comparison to other treatment combinations. In traditional row and strip cowpea-sorghum intercropping systems, cowpea forage yield reduces significantly due to intense competition and dominance of sorghum in acquiring growth resources. This field study evaluated novel mixed strip intercropping systems of forage cowpea and sorghum having different number of crops rows arranged under different spatial arrangements. Cowpea was intercropped with sorghum in 8, 12 and 16 rows strips with row-row spacing of 30, 45 and 60 cm. In each strip, equal number of rows of cowpea and sorghum were maintained. Factorial arrangement of randomized complete block design with three replicates was used to execute the field trials during summer seasons of 2013 and 2014. Strips having 12 rows and 60 cm row-row spacing positively affected all agronomic variables of cowpea which led to maximum forage yield (22.2 and 23.7 t ha-1 during 2013 and 2014 respectively) and dry matter biomass (6.63 and 6.94 t ha-1 during 2013 and 2014 respectively). In contrast, 8-rows strips having line spacing of 30 cm outperformed other intercropping systems by yielding the maximum herbage yield and dry matter biomass of sorghum. The intercropping system comprising of 12-rows strips with 60 cm row-row spacing remained superior in recording the maximum crude protein, fats and total ash along with the minimum fiber content of cowpea. In addition, this intercropping system under rest of spatial arrangements also remained unmatched, while 16-rows strips under all planting geometries remained inferior to other intercropping systems. Thus, cowpea intercropping with sorghum in 12-rows strips having 60 cm spacing offers biologically viable solution to improve biomass and forage quality of cowpea in intercropping with sorghum.

Aims: To introduce brachiaria grasses in Meru and Embu Counties to increase the range of fodder/forage varieties available to smallholders through the use of climate-smart brachiaria grasses for increased income. The project also aimed at identifying the best brachiaria varieties suitable for the target Agro-Ecological ones through evaluation by the farmers and yield assessment. Study Design:  Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) Place and Duration of Study: The study was carried out in Embu and Meru Counties during the short rains of 2015. Methodology: Three varieties of brachiaria were introduced in the short rains of 2015 in KALRO Embu, Geeto Igoji in Meru, and Embu County. These were Brachiaria decumbense -Cultivar Basilisk, Brachiaria brizantha- Cultivar BRS Piata and Brachiaria brizantha- Cultivar Toledo. Plots of 5x5m were planted and replicated three times using Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) to increase the range of fodder/forage varieties available to smallholder and assess the yield and acceptability of the different brachiaria grasses varieties. The three varieties were planted in the mega demonstration sites. The grass performance was analyzed through pairwise ranking and the grass with the best attributes was selected. Yield data was also collected. Results: After ranking, the results indicated that the rate of growth and the amount of biomass as the most important attributes followed by the animals' response after feeding and the rate of rejuvenation after harvesting respectively. Using the attributes, the group members concluded that Brachiaria decumbense- Cultivar basilisk was the best followed by brachiaria brizantha- Cultivar piata and finally brachiaria brizantha- Cultivar Toledo. Conclusion: In conclusion, based on the attributes, the best brachiaria varieties for use in Embu and Meru Countries are Brachiaria decumbense –Cultivar Basilisk and Brachiaria brizantha- Cultivar Toledo. Based on yield, Brachiaria brizantha- Cultivar Toledo is the best in Embu County while Brachiaria brizantha- Cultivar Basilisk is the best in Meru County.

An experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI), Regional Station, Kishoreganj during July to December of 2010 and 2011 to investigate the effect of spacing and de-topping on yield and quality of kenaf seeds cv. HC-95 grown under direct seeding method. Three plants spacings (40 cm × 15 cm, 30 cm × 15 cm and 20 cm × 15 cm) and four de-topping treatments (no de-topping, de-topping at 15, 30 and 45  days after emergence (DAE) were applied in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The highest yield of kenaf seed (1403 and 1646 kgha-1 in 2010 and 2011, respectively) was obtained from sowing at 30 cm × 15 cm spacing. The best quality seed in respect to germination and vigour was also obtained from sowing at 30 cm × 15 cm spacing. The highest seed yield, germination and vigour of seed were obtained for de-topped at 45 days after emergence. It is concluded that the highest seed yield and quality of late season direct seeded kenaf could be obtained by sowing at a spacing of 30 cm x 15 cm and de-topping at 45 days after emergence. Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) cv. Santa Clara was grown on a silt clay soil with 46 mg dm-3 Mehlich 1 extractable K, to evaluate the effects of trickle-applied K rates on fruit yield and to establish K critical concentrations in soil and in plant petioles. Six potassium rates (0, 48, 119, 189, 259 and 400 kg ha-1 K) were applied in a randomized complete block design with four replications. Soil and plant K critical levels were determined at two plant growth stages (at the beginning of the second and fourth cluster flowering). Total, marketable and weighted yields increased with K rates, reaching their maximum of 86.4, 73.4, and 54.9 ton ha-1 at 198, 194, and 125 kg ha-1 K , respectively. At the first soil sampling date K critical concentrations in the soil associated with K rates for maximum marketable and weighted yields were 92 and 68 mg dm-3, respectively. Potassium critical concentrations in the dry matter of the petioles sampled by the beginning of the second and fourth cluster flowering time, associated with maximum weighted yield, were 10.30 and 7.30 dag kg-1, respectively.
