Poor literacy rates contribute to low school performance for children across America. In particular, low-income schools continue to struggle with declining literacy rates. Issues with literacy are often attributed to lack of reading comprehension. This study tested the effects of choice on reading comprehension in second- and third-grade students at a high-income school and a low-income school. Students were observed while reading silently and aloud to see if either method affected reading comprehension. Data were collected from 32 students before, during, and after reading to determine whether students’ comprehension levels were higher when given opportunities to choose their own books or when they read assigned books. Trials were performed while students read silently and then aloud. Results indicated that students had higher comprehension levels both when they could choose their own books and when they read silently.

Reading literacy, consisting of prose and document literacy, is an integral part of functional literacy that has become one of the key goals and success criteria of contemporary educational systems around the world. Lower level of functional literacy limits not only the opportunities of an individual, but also the development and successful functioning of the whole society. This paper analyzes the average degree of prose and document literacy of the third grade secondary school students (N=703) in Novi Sad who are nearing the end of their secondary education. Their literacy rate is therefore likely to determine their forthcoming chances related to academic education or success in the labor market. The instrument employed in this research was a questionnaire consisting of 20 extracts from a variety of texts, 10 of which were related to prose and 10 to document literacy. The analysis of the results focused on average achievements in different types of schools as well as on specific problems observed in text processing and potential solutions. The findings indicate that the level of reading literacy of an average third grade student is relatively low, which might lead to their limited professional opportunities in the future. The analysis of the results also shows that students have serious difficulties in processing prose and scientific texts, particularly if the information is not displayed explicitly. Skills that were found to be insufficiently developed involve comparing, integrating or synthesizing information.

This current research aims to measure the effectiveness of using a proposed strategy for teaching literary texts based on the main assumptions of NLP in developing reading comprehension levels and improving reading self-efficacy for second-grade students, and to achieve this goal the researcher has prepared a list of reading comprehension levels and their behavioral indicators (Skills) required for second year secondary school students, as well as the appropriate reading self dimensions for secondary school students related to literary texts, and the researcher prepared a test that measures reading levels of comprehension, and a measure of the dimensions of the reading self, As well as preparing student worksheets and a teacher’s guide explaining how to use the proposed strategy. The results revealed that there were statistically significant differences between the mean scores of the experimental group and the scores of the control group in the test of post-comprehension reading and the dimensional reading self-measure in favor of the experimental group. The results also indicated the effectiveness of using the proposed strategy based on hypotheses of NLP in developing reading comprehension levels and improving The dimensions of the reading self of the experimental group students.

According to national and international assessment results, there is a serious problem regarding reading comprehension skills in Mexico, specifically global reading comprehension. Different tools and techniques have been used to try to minimize this problem. Serious games with educational purposes are a popular tool, as they are useful in developing abilities or improving learning on top of being fun to play. This chapter presents the use of a prototype of a serious game to improve global reading comprehension in children attending the third grade of primary school. The instruction design was empathizing in the design section. Through a quasi-experiment during a four-month period, the game was tested in five third-grade students. Results show a significant improvement in their global reading comprehension skill. However, as future work, and after the quarantine, a bigger sample size is required to generalize findings.

In this study, we investigated the relationships among achievement goals, self-efficacy, reading strategies, and the self assessment of performance in 47 Middle School students with control of the variable’s history of repetition, school year, and age. The differences in the students’ self-assessment regarding the practice of recreational reading were also analyzed. The students responded to three scales of the Multidimensional Battery of Reading Comprehension Self-Regulation. Statistically significant correlations were identified among the motivational constructs, reading strategies, self-assessment, and achievement goals. We identified differences in the indices between the bivariate and partial correlations. The achievement goals were predictors  of self-efficacy and reading strategies. These three constructs predicted the students’ self assessment in Portuguese language and reading comprehension. Students who practiced recreational reading presented a higher self-assessment than students who did not have this habit. It is suggested to continue the investigations on the theme and incorporate the findings of this study into the pedagogical practices that encourage reading.   How to cite this article: Ferraz, A.
