In order to achieve fuzzy control of nitrification in a Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) brewery wastewater was used as the substrate. The effect of alkalinity on pH variation during nitrification was systematically studied, at the same time the variations of DO and ORP were investigated. Alkalinity and pH of the wastewater were adjusted by adding sodium bicarbonate at five levels and sodium hydroxide at two levels. Unadjusted wastewater was also studied. According to the results, variation of pH could be divided into rising type and descending type. When bicarbonate alkalinity was deficient or sufficient, the descending type happened. If alkalinity was deficient, the pH decreasing rate got slower when nitrification nearly stopped; if alkalinity was sufficient, at the end of nitrification pH turned from decrease to increase. This was the most common situation and pH could be used to control the end of nitrification. When alkalinity was excessive, the rising type happened, pH was increasing at nearly a constant rate during and after nitrification and could not be used to control the nitrification time, but if the aeration rate was moderate DO could be used to control the nitrification time. This situation seldom happened. Therefore the variation of pH could not only be used to control the nitrification time but also to judge whether the alkalinity was enough or not. On the basis of this, the fuzzy controller of nitrification in SBR was constructed. When discussing the influence of pH on nitrification rate the composition and concentration of alkalinity must be considered or else the results may be incomprehensive. And to some extent the influence of alkalinity on nitrification rate was more important than pH.

In order to achieve fuzzy control of denitrification in a Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) brewery wastewater was used as the substrate. The effects of brewery wastewater, sodium acetate, methanol and endogenous carbon source on the relationships between pH, ORP and denitrification were investigated. Also different quantities of brewery wastewater were examined. All the results indicated that the nitrate apex and nitrate knee occurred in the pH and ORP profiles at the end of denitrification. And when carbon was the limiting factor, through comparing the different increasing rate of pH whether the carbon was enough or not could be known, and when the carbon should be added again could be decided. On the basis of this, the fuzzy controller for denitrification in SBR was constructed, and the on-line fuzzy control experiments comparing three methods of carbon addition were carried out. The results showed that continuous carbon addition at a low rate might be the best method, it could not only give higher denitrification rate but also reduce the re-aeration time as much as possible. It appears promising to use pH and ORP as fuzzy control parameters to control the denitrification time and the addition of carbon.

This thesis puts forward one optimal adaptive fuzzy control method based on the pure electric vehicle energy management system of the fuzzy control which has been founded already. By adding an optimizing researching model based on the conventional fuzzy control strategy, the thesis can pick up the valuable control rules based on the dynamic programming theory and also can adjust the parameter of the fuzzy controller automatically according to the system operating. These can make the sum of the energy loss reduce to the min. The experiment points out that this method makes the vehicle possess good economic performance in the same driving cycle.

South Africa is not an exception when it comes to the issue of fresh water scarcity perpetuated by environmental pollution among many other factors. Industrial wastewater particularly emanating from the brewing industry, contains high-strength organic, inorganic, and biological compounds which are toxic to the environment. Due to stringent industrial effluent dewatering standards enforced by both local and international environmental protection entities, industrial wastewater cannot be discharged into receiving water bodies prior to treatment. The overall aim of this study was to evaluate the performance or treatment efficacy of a laboratory scale sequencing batch reactor on biological nutrient removal using industrial wastewater from brewery. In this study, two laboratory scale sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) operated in a cyclic aerobic-anaerobic configuration inoculated with activated sludge were investigated for their removal of orthophosphates and nitrogen compounds from brewery wastewater. SBR-1 was investigated for nitrogen group pollutant removal and SBR-2 was investigated for orthophosphate removal. The findings of the study are reported based on overall removal efficacies for the following process monitoring parameters: orthophosphates, ammoniacal nitrogen, total Kjeldahl nitrogen, total nitrogen, total organic nitrogen, total inorganic nitrogen and NO3-N+NO2-N. From the investigation, the following overall removal efficacies were obtained: 69% orthophosphates, 69% ammoniacal nitrogen, 59% total Kjeldahl nitrogen, 60% total nitrogen, 64% total organic nitrogen, 67% total inorganic nitrogen and 56% NO3-N+NO2-N at an organic loading rate of 3.17 kg Total Chemical Oxygen Demand (TCOD) /m3.day with a food to microorganism ratio of 2.86 g TCOD/g Volatile Suspended Solids (VSS).day. These removal efficacies were attained for a hydraulic retention time of 18 hours for both SBRs with a solids retention time of 5 days for SBR-1 and 7 days for SBR-2. Both reactors were operated at a mesophilic temperature range of 23 to 26˚C and a pH range of 5 to 8.5. The temperature was left unadjusted because it was observed that it did not hinder any microbial activities during the biodegradation process. The Michealis-Menten’s and Monod models were implemented to study the substrate utilisation rate kinetics and microbial growth rate kinetics recording 15 141 g COD/m3.day; 12 518 g VSS/g VSS.day; 20 343 g COD/m3.day and 16 860 g VSS/g VSS.day for SBR-1 and SBR-2, respectively. The Monod model demonstrated a strong correlation fit between the substrate utilisation rate and microbial growth rate recording a polynomial correlation constant of R2 = 0.947 and 0.9582 for SBR-1 and SBR-2, respectively. The findings of this study showed that the cyclic aerobic-anaerobic configuration on a laboratory scale SBR inoculated with activated sludge for treatment of brewery wastewater for biological nutrients was feasible.

The performance of Carbon Nanotubes hybrid hydrogels for environmental remediation was investigated using Methylene Blue (MB), Rhodamine B (RD), and Bengal Rose (BR) as model contaminating dyes. An acrylate hydrogel network with incorporated CNT was synthesized by photo-polymerization without any preliminary derivatization of CNT surface. Thermodynamics, isothermal and kinetic studies showed favorable sorption processes with the application of an external 12 V electric field found to be able to influence the amount of adsorbed dyes: stronger interactions with cationic MB molecules ( and of 19.72 and 33.45 mg g−1, respectively) and reduced affinity for anionic RD ( and of 28.93 and 13.06 mg g−1, respectively) and neutral BR ( and of 36.75 and 15.85 mg g−1, respectively) molecules were recorded. The influence of pH variation on dyes adsorption was finally highlighted by reusability studies, with the negligible variation of adsorption capacity after five repeated sorption cycles claiming for the suitability of the proposed systems as effective sorbent for wastewater treatment.

Abstract The fuzzy control system is composed of an integral part of modern intelligent automatic control, can control of precision is difficult to directly establish the mathematical model of the intelligent control system object data for effective fuzzy control, so fuzzy has wide application field, considering the basic features of fuzzy control arithmetic, more close to the parallel processing of the way of fuzzy data stream, so fuzzy control is more suitable for implementation by a special control circuit, not only can not only improve the speed of data processing, and it also can improve the control system running stability. With the improvement of programming logic and programmable ability of FPGA, FPGA has the necessary ability to implement ASIC directly and meet the requirements of system programming and design on chip. It has become the development trend of FPGA. The fuzzy analog controller can be used as a digital analog controller of a DC/DC fuzzy converter. In the absence of Matlab/Simulinkc environment, a DC/DC fuzzy converter can be modeled by using Maplecs toolbox. The simulation test results firstly verify the practical feasibility of the fuzzy analog controller. Then PLXILINXXC3S500EFPGA chip is used to realize the fuzzy simulation controller, and good simulation results are obtained.

In the last decade, global competition has forced manufacturers to optimize logistics. The implementation of collapsible containers provides a new perspective for logistics cost savings, since using collapsible containers reduces the frequency of shipping freight. However, optimization of logistic cost is complicated due to the interactions in a system, such as market demand, inventory, production throughput, and uncertainty. Therefore, a systematic model and accurate estimation of the total cost and system performance are of great importance for decision making. In this paper, a mathematical model is developed to describe deterministic and stochastic scenarios for a closed-loop container dynamic flow system. The uncertainties in a factory and a supplier are considered in the model. The performance evaluation of the collapsible container system and total cost estimation are provided through model analysis. Furthermore, fuzzy control method is proposed to monitor the processing rate of the supplier and the factory and to adjust the rate of the supplier operation then further reduce the logistic cost. A case study with a matlab simulation is presented to illustrate the accuracy of the mathematical model and the effectiveness of the fuzzy controller.
