: C-Methylation of organic substrates was accomplished with a number of methylating agents other than methane, methanol, and methyl metals. They include methyl halides (MeX, X = I, Br, Cl, F), methyl-containing halogenated reagents, methyl peroxides, dimethyl carbonate (DMC), dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), N,N-dimethyl formamide (DMF), diazomethane, formate salts, trioxane, CO/H2, CO2/H2, and dimethyl ether (DME). Under particular conditions, some methyl-containing molecules such as polymethylbenzenes, methylhydrazine, tris(diethylamino)sulfonium difluorotrimethylsilicate, methyl tosylate, long-chain alkyl alcohols, and acetic acid unexpectedly C-methylated a variety of organic substrates. A few cases of C-methylation only were reported to occur in the absence of catalysts. Otherwise, transition metal complexes as catalysts in conjunction with specific ligands and bases were ubiquitously present in most C-methylation reactions. Of the reactions, Suzuki-Miyaura-type cross-coupling remained of paramount importance in making 11CH3-bearing positron emission tomography tracers (PETs), one of the best applications of such methylation. Methylation proceeded at C(aromatic)-X, C(sp3)-X C(sp2)-X, and C(sp)-X of substrates (X = H, halogen). Ortho-methylation was regioselectively observed with aromatic substrates when they bear moieties such as pyridyl, pyrimidyl, amide, and imine functionalities, which were accordingly coined ‘ortho-directing groups’.

The present account surveys the results of the plethora of works on Nmethylation of nitrogen-containing substrates, mainly amines. The countless reports in the literature on this issue reveal the emergence of a set of methylating agents, which include: methanol, dimethyl carbonate, formaldehyde/formic acid, carbon dioxide/reductant, methyl iodide, dimethylsulfate, peroxides, dimethylsulfoxide, tetramethylammonium salts, and other unusual ones. Types of the methylating agents including, catalyst, solvent, base, ligand, reducing agent and other reaction conditions such as temperature and time would greatly affect the extent of selectivity of N-monomethylation vis-à-vis N,N-dimethylation. The degree of acidity or alkalinity of catalysts such as the solid catalysts (i.e. zeolites) showed a substantial impact on the selectivity and the course of methylation, leading to design adequate catalysts or to bring suitable modifications to the existing ones. Although this account takes into consideration all types of methylating agents, it is worthwhile to mention that the relatively recent works have been focused on the utilization of eco-friendly methylating agents, including carbon dioxide/reductant, methanol, and dimethylcarbonate. N-Methyl-containing drugs were successfully synthesized with some methylating agents under specified conditions. In some instances, unexpected products and events from the planned N-methylation of some nitrogen-containing molecules occurred. N-Formylation occurred as an intermediate or concomitant reaction when amines were subjected to catalyze methylation with methanol, formaldehyde/ formic acid, and carbon dioxide/reductant. The occasionally depicted mechanisms would elucidate the carbon and hydrogen sources of the affixing methyl group on the nitrogen site. Peculiarly, methylation involving methanol as a methylating agent and transition metal catalysis called for borrowing hydrogen process as a new mechanistic approach.

A literature survey on C-methylation of organic substrates with methane as a methylating agent is analyzed. Of the substrates that undergo C-methylation are benzene, naphthalenes, toluene, alkanes, alkenes, acetonitrile, and other functionalized organic compounds. None of these methylation reactions occur in the absence of a catalyst. A direct introduction of a methyl group on the carbon sites of a molecule is concomitant with the formation of other products, as a result of either a possible rearrangement or a further reaction with methane. Mechanistically, the C-methylation with methane proceeds oxidatively. The products selectivities depend on several factors, mainly on the acid/ base character of the solid catalyst.

A variety of linear chain materials exist as polydisperse systems which are difficultly purified. The stability of continuous binary solid solutions assume that the Gibbs free energy of the solution is lower than that of either crystal component, a condition which includes such factors as relative molecular sizes and shapes and perhaps the symmetry of the pure component crystal structures.Although extensive studies of n-alkane miscibility have been carried out via powder X-ray diffraction of bulk samples we have begun to examine binary systems as single crystals, taking advantage of the well-known enhanced scattering cross section of matter for electrons and also the favorable projection of a paraffin crystal structure posited by epitaxial crystallization of such samples on organic substrates such as benzoic acid.

Background: Suicide is a major cause of premature death in Italy and occurs at different rates in the various regions. Aims: The aim of the present study was to provide a comprehensive overview of suicide in the Italian population aged 15 years and older for the years 1980–2006. Methods: Mortality data were extracted from the Italian Mortality Database. Results: Mortality rates for suicide in Italy reached a peak in 1985 and declined thereafter. The different patterns observed by age and sex indicated that the decrease in the suicide rate in Italy was initially the result of declining rates in those aged 45+ while, from 1997 on, the decrease was attributable principally to a reduction in suicide rates among the younger age groups. It was found that socioeconomic factors underlined major differences in the suicide rate across regions. Conclusions: The present study confirmed that suicide is a multifaceted phenomenon that may be determined by an array of factors. Suicide prevention should, therefore, be targeted to identifiable high-risk sociocultural groups in each country.

This volume provides the first comprehensive overview of the extant Greek and Latin letter collections of late antiquity (ca. 300-600 C.E.). Bringing together an international team of historians, classicists, and scholars of religion, it illustrates how letter collections advertised an image of the letter writer and introduces the social and textual histories of each collection. Nearly every chapter focuses on the letter collection of a different late ancient author—from the famous (or even infamous) to the obscure—and investigates its particular issues of content, arrangement, and publication context. On the whole, the volume reveals how late antique letter collections operated as a discrete literary genre with its own conventions, transmission processes, and self-presentational agendas while offering new approaches to interpret both larger letter collections and the individual letters contained within them. Each chapter contributes to a broad argument that scholars should read letter collections as they do representatives of other late antique literary genres, as single texts made up of individual components, with larger thematic and literary characteristics that are as important as those of their component parts.
