Background: The placenta maintains and regulates the growth of foetus and consists of various biologically active nutrients such as cytomedines, vitamins, trace elements, amino acids, peptides, growth factors and other biologically active constituents. Introduction: The therapeutic effectiveness of the placenta can be well defined with respect to several biochemical mechanisms of various components present in it. The placental extract derived from biomedical wastes has also shown a great potential for treatment of various diseases. Method: Placental therapy has been reported specifically to have potent action on treatment of diseases and tissue regeneration. Result: Placental bioactive components and their multi-targeting identity prompted us to compile the précised information on placental extract products. However, some findings are needed to be explored by scientific community to prove their clinical potential with significant statistical validation. Conclusion: In the light of available information and the usefulness of the placental extract, it is necessary that the formulations of various desirable properties may be developed to meet the clinical requirements in several treatment paradigms. It is also a matter of exploration that the short- and long-term adverse effects to be explored by advanced scientific techniques.

Anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitides (AAVs) are near universally fatal conditions if untreated. Although effective therapeutic options are available for these diseases, treatment regimens are associated with both short- and long-term adverse effects. The recent identification of effective B-cell-targeted therapy with an anti-CD20 monoclonal antibody has transformed the treatment landscape of AAV. Questions, nevertheless, remain regarding the appropriate timing, dose, frequency, duration, and long-term effects of treatment. The aim of this article is to provide an overview of the current information, recent advances, ongoing clinical trials, and future treatment possibilities in AAV.

The climatic variability in the Tropical Andes area is high, both spatially and temporally, and its analysis must be carried out both in the short and long term depending on the available information. This type of spatial-temporal analysis provides tools for planning and environmental management in urban areas, given its high complexity. This investigation focuses on a diagnosis of the diurnal cycle and the analysis of the monthly temperature structure in 13 stations located in the city of Manizales, Caldas (Colombia). This applied research aims to understand the behavior of the temperature in a tropical Andes city in Colombia, where the spatial-temporal complexity of this variable improve the urban and hydrological planning strategies. Results correspond to what has been previously defined by other authors for the Andean zone: city temperature shows very stable patrons, yet important variations in temperature range across the city are appreciated during the day.

Children with Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) may present with a malocclusion and have a high propensity of developing obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Obstructive sleep apnea is associated with short- and long-term adverse effects that negatively impact children with PWS. A case of a 15-year-old male with PWS, OSA, and a debilitating malocclusion is presented who underwent a combination of Le Fort 1 osteotomy, genioplasty, and tongue reduction to successfully treat his OSA and malocclusion. In select cases, orthognathic correction and other surgical therapies should be considered in patients with PWS.

Human milk (HM) is considered the most complete food for infants as its nutritional composition is specifically designed to meet infant nutritional requirements during early life. HM also provides numerous biologically active components, such as polyunsaturated fatty acids, milk fat globules, IgA, gangliosides or polyamines, among others; in addition, HM has a “bifidogenic effect”, a prebiotic effect, as a result of the low concentration of proteins and phosphates, as well as the presence of lactoferrin, lactose, nucleotides and oligosaccharides. Recently, has been a growing interest in HM as a potential source of probiotics and commensal bacteria to the infant gut, which might, in turn, influence both the gut colonization and maturation of infant immune system. Our review aims to address practical approaches to the detection of microbial communities in human breast milk samples, delving into their origin, composition and functions. Furthermore, we will summarize the current knowledge of how HM microbiota dysbiosis acts as a short- and long-term predictor of maternal and infant health. Finally, we also provide a critical view of the role of breast milk-related bacteria as a novel probiotic strategy in the prevention and treatment of maternal and offspring diseases.

There is strong evidence to support prevention of postoperative delirium through comprehensive geriatric assessment and multicomponent nonpharmacologic interventions. Risk assessment must be accompanied by communication of the risk to the patient, caregivers, and perioperative interdisciplinary team to engage all in evidence-based prevention interventions. However, once postoperative delirium has developed, efforts should be focused on prevention of short- and long-term adverse effects.   RÉSUMÉDes données probantes solides appuient la prévention du délire postopératoire en recourant à une évaluation gériatrique complète et à des interventions non pharmacologiques à plusieurs composantes. L’évaluation des risques doit s’accompagner d’une communication du risque au patient, aux soignants et à l’équipe interdisciplinaire périopératoire afin que tous participent aux interventions de prévention fondées sur des données probantes. Toutefois, une fois que le délire postopératoire s’est installé, les efforts doivent être axés sur la prévention des effets indésirables à court et à long terme.

This chapter provides a synthesis of some of the useful prison policies discussed throughout this volume. The sources of useful versus harmful policies in addition to the implications of the latter are discussed. Perhaps the most common source of harmful policies has been heavier emphases placed on punishment by politicians and court actors who are further removed from the prison experience. Common denominators of policies that have generally improved the welfare of prisoners and/or prison staff, on the other hand, include grounding in an increasingly humanitarian view of offenders, a growing awareness of both short- and long-term adverse effects of incarceration on offenders and the general population, greater reliance on empirically based strategies, and interagency collaborations to ensure long-term solutions while minimizing unanticipated ill effects. The greatest obstacles to overcoming harmful policies are also reviewed, highlighting the importance of cumulative knowledge and ongoing empirical research on best practices.

Stress investigation especially in young healthy adults is a main mental health issue due to its individual and social consequences on long term. In order to characterize physiological, pathological and biochemical mechanisms of stress response, several biomarkers were proposed. Among these, the evaluation of the salivary biomarkers represents a fast and simple procedure, both in healthy subjects and patients. Saliva contains a wide range of parameters reflecting physiologic endocrine and immune responses, such as biologically active form of certain hormones (e.g. cortisol), growth factors, immune molecules. The present article is focused on cortisol evaluation as possible biomarker of stress and its analyze in the context of literature data.
