Abstract. The issues of sapphire friction and wear in contact with chrome steel and zirconium ceramics are discussed in this article. The kinetic microindentation method is used to study the mechanical properties of sapphire in frictional contact in modelling experiments on the indentation of a Vickers indent. Taking into account the anisotropy of the mechanical properties of sapphire, the influence of the load and orientation of the indent on the modulus of elasticity and hardness is analyzed. It has been established that, under dry friction conditions it is promising the use of zirconium ceramics in the supports of devices operating under conditions in which the use of lubricants is impossible. The possibility of using a friction couple of sapphire-zirconium ceramics in friction units operating in open space is noted.

The article considers the issues of contact interaction of nanostructured zirconium dioxide crystals with molybdenum coating on titanium-based alloy ВТ9. The following statement is substantiated: the best mechanical properties of crystals correspond to the total amount of 2.8% additives of stabilizing and doping rare earths elements. Antifriction properties of crystals under dry friction against molybdenum are investigated. Tribological testing was performed on a reciprocating friction gauge simulating the operation of a plunger in a cylinder. The high scoring resistance of the friction couple under study was experimentally proved; the friction coefficient did not exceed 0.07. On the basis of the study performed, the friction couple is defined as promising for increasing the lifetime and reliability of friction units for hydraulic equipment and fuel pumps.

We study a quasistatic problem describing the contact with friction and wear between a piezoelectric body and a moving foundation. The material is modeled by an electro-viscoelastic constitutive law with long memory and damage. The wear of the contact surface due to friction is taken into account and is described by the differential Archard condition. The contact is modeled with the normal compliance condition and the associated law of dry friction. We present a variational formulation of the problem and establish, under a smallness assumption on the data, the existence and uniqueness of the weak solution. The proof is based on arguments of parabolic evolutionary inequations, elliptic variational inequalities and Banach fixed point.

With the rapid growth in the manufacturing industry and increased urbanization, higher amounts of composite material waste are being produced, causing severe threats to the environment. These environmental concerns, coupled with the fact that undergraduate students typically have minimal experience in research, have initiated the need at the UAE University to promote research among undergraduate students, leading to the development of a summer undergraduate research program. In this study, a recycling methodology is presented to test lab-fabricated Carbon-Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) for potential applications in industrial composite waste. The work was conducted by two groups of undergraduate students at the UAE University. The methodology involved the chemical dissolution of the composite waste, followed by compression molding and adequate heat treatment for rapid curing of CFRP. Subsequently, the CFRP samples were divided into three groups based on their geometrical distinctions. The mechanical properties (i.e., modulus of elasticity and compressive strength) were determined through material testing, and the results were then compared with steel for prompt reference. The results revealed that the values of mechanical properties range from 2 to 4.3 GPa for the modulus of elasticity and from 203.7 to 301.5 MPa for the compressive strength. These values are considered competitive and optimal, and as such, carbon fiber waste can be used as an alternate material for various structural applications. The inconsistencies in the values are due to discrepancies in the procedure as a result of the lack of specialized equipment for handling CFRP waste material. The study concluded that the properties of CFRP composite prepreg scrap tend to be reusable instead of disposable. Despite the meager experimental discrepancies, test values and mechanical properties indicate that CFRP composite can be successfully used as a material for nonstructural applications.

This research aimed to investigate the mechanical and physical properties of Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) used with Recycled Concrete Aggregate (RCA) as a replacement for natural coarse aggregate. The maximum dry density method was adopted to prepare RCC mixtures with 200 kg/m³ of cement content and coarse natural aggregates in the concrete mixture. Four RCC mixtures were produced from different RCA incorporation ratios (0%, 5%, 15%, and 30%). The compaction test, compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural tensile strength, and modulus of elasticity, porosity, density, and water absorption tests were performed to analyze the mechanical and physical properties of the mixtures. One-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to identify the influences of RCA on RCC’s mechanical properties. As RCA increased in mixtures, some mechanical properties were observed to decrease, such as modulus of elasticity, but the same was not observed in the splitting tensile strength. All RCCs displayed compressive strength greater than 15.0 MPa at 28 days, splitting tensile strength above 1.9 MPa, flexural tensile strength above 2.9 MPa, and modulus of elasticity above 19.0 GPa. According to Brazilian standards, the RCA added to RCC could be used for base layers.

The tribological properties of polyimide (PI) composites reinforced with graphite or MoS2 sliding in liquid alkali and water as well as dry friction were investigated using a ring-on-ring tester. The results show that the friction coefficient (μ) and wear rate (W) for both graphite/PI and MoS2/PI composites in different liquid mediums are μdry>μwater >μalkali and Wwater>Wdry >Walkali. Results also indicate that the friction coefficient and wear rate of the PI composites filled with different solid lubricants are μMoS2 >μgraphite and W MoS2 >Wgraphite in different liquid mediums. In addition, the hydrophobic inorganic fillers are fit for the reinforcement of polymer-based composites sliding in liquid mediums. It is also concluded from the authors’ work that the wear rate and friction coefficient of polymer-based (such as PI, PTFE) composites in the alkali lubricated conditions is lowest among all the friction conditions. This may be attributed to the ionic hydration in the alkaline solution.

This study aimed, with the aid of analysis of variance (ANOVA), to investigate and quantify the influence of moisture ranging between 12% and over 30% (fiber saturation) on the mechanical properties: strength and modulus of elasticity in compression and in tension parallel to grain; modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity in static bending; shear strength parallel to grain considering wood species Ipê (Tabebuia sp) and Angelim Araroba (Vataireopsis araroba). Tests were performed according to the assumptions and calculating methods Brazilian standard ABNT NBR 7190, Anexx B, totalizing 400 tests. Results of ANOVA revealed a significant reduction (16% on average) for mechanical properties wood due to the increase in moisture content from 12% to over 30% (fiber saturation). The same behavior also occurred when assembly containing the two species was considered.

The effects of the polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) concentration on mechanical properties of hydrogels based on blends of native or denatured collagen / PVA were examined. Blends of PVA with collagen were obtained by mixing the solutions in different ratios, using glycerol as a plasticizer. The solutions were cast on polystyrene plates and the solvent was allowed to evaporate at room temperature. Uniaxial tensile tests were performed in order to obtain the initial modulus of elasticity (up to deformation 0.1), the ultimate tensile stress and the deformation at failure of the material in the water-saturated hydrogel form. It was found that the material was elastic and the addition of PVA helped to enhance both the ultimate tensile stress and modulus of elasticity of the films. Samples prepared from denaturated collagen showed the higher ultimate tensile stress and the deformation at failure in comparison with those prepared from native collagen. The results suggest that we could expect successful application of the collagen/PVA biomaterial for tissue engineering.
