Defining a minister's power is not an easy exercise. It bas to be put in a broader framework: a pluralistic democracy, that has respect for human rights and basic freedoms and a market economy that is developping towards a national border crossing competition and cooperation. But there are also some basic rules coming from national but also regional and supranational institutions. There nowadays exists a so called 'Gulliver-effect': the state represented by the governement is like a giant that is threatened by a lot of surrenders whoforce him towards a powerless existence. Although citizens often have the impression politics is capable of doing anything it wants to, policy makers more often have to cope with restrictions that obstruct them in their policy aims.At the beginning of the twenty-first century ministers are heavily counterbalanced by other institions. Trade unions, big lobby groups, administration, the cabinets, the party executive and party president, parliament and the media: they all threaten a minster's power. Also the rising power of regional and supranational decision levels makes the power of a politician decline. In the future, rising information and communication skills will not only change the character of politics but also that of modern society. The internet, the globalisation ofeconomy and other changes will transform politics in a fundamental way. Leadership, power and authority will change strongly and the relationship between the citizens and their authority will never be the same again.

Abstrak: Teknologi  informasi  dan  komunikasi  yang  berkembang  saat  ini, telah  menciptakan  perubahan  pada  banyak  hal.  Terlebih  dengan kehadiran  internet,  berbagai  keunggulannya  semakin  menambah keunggulan  dalam  dinamika  kehidupan  modern.  Ratusan juta manusia di seluruh dunia mengakses internet setiap harinya, dan jumlahnya terus bertambah dari waktu ke waktu. Hal ini berdampak pada penggunaan internet untuk kegiatan dakwah.Secara umum dakwah dilaksanakan secara konvensional. Namun, seiring perkembangan teknologi informasi, bermunculan dakwah yang menggunakan internet, yang biasa disebut dengan cyber dakwah. Terkait dengan hal tersebut, penelitian ini berupaya untuk melihat keterkaitan keduanya dalam konstruksi keberagamaan, yang karenanya media internet memberikan kemudahan dalam penyebaran informasi kepada masyarakat. Adapun jenis penelitian ini adalah kualitatif, dengan menggunakan metode field work yang dipadukan dengan studi kepustakaan.Diharapkan penelitian ini akan membuka ruang diskusi baru mengenai studi keislaman kontemporer yang lebih integratif dengan isu-isu kekinian. Selain itu, untuk memperkaya cakrawala terhadap diskursus perkembangan media yang menjadi bagian dari wacana keislaman global dan masyarakat modern. Abtsract: Information and communication technology that has developed at this time has created changes in many things. Especially with the presence of the internet, various advantages have added to the dynamics of modern life. Hundreds of millions of people around the world access the internet every day, and the number continues to increase from time to time. This has an impact on the use of the internet for da'wah activities.In general, preaching is carried out conventionally. However, along with the development of information technology, da'wah has sprung up using the internet, commonly referred to as cyber da'wah. Related to this, this study seeks to see the relationship between the two in religious construction, which is why internet media makes it easy to disseminate information to the public. The type of this study is qualitative, using the field work method combined with library studies.It is hoped that this research will open up new discussion space regarding contemporary Islamic studies that are more integrative with current issues. In addition, to enrich the horizon of the discourse of media development which is part of a global Islamic discourse and modern society.

Has suburbia ever truly met the needs of the populations it claims to serve? Since its creation suburbia has been a centre of conflict between the image created by the media and lived realities. The post war images of femininity in the suburbs were ones of domesticity and a heteronormative family. In essence the “sitcom” family was created and reality was made to look like its television counterpart. Yet in real life, did any family look like that of Leave it to Beaver? Have our ideals of the perfect family living in the perfect house truly changed? If they have changed have they had an effect on policy makers and land developers? A brief historical examination of suburbia, its creation, and media images will be contrasted with the developments and policies we find in today’s suburbia. To partially answer my original question the demographic of women in suburbia, more specifically mothers will be discussed. Are today’s media images of suburbia a better depiction of lived realities or are urban political processes still at play to perpetuate an ideal image?

There is a growing interest among educators to use video games in the classroom as part of the curriculum to meet the educational needs of today’s students. This may be justified, in part, by claims in recent years about today’s technology-savvy students and their adept use of information and communication technology (ICT). However, such claims have not been accepted without scrutiny; indeed, the relationship between games and learning has been tempestuous over the years. This chapter sought to identify the gaming propensity of postsecondary students (N = 580) through the use of a questionnaire. Age, gender, and socioeconomic status were examined as factors that might explain why students play games. Results suggest that age, gender, and socioeconomic status are composite factors that contribute to gaming, but not the most important consideration in terms of general ICT usage. The findings raise a number of implications for educators, educational policy-makers, practitioners, researchers, instructional technologists, and game developers across both the education spectrum and the entertainment industry in terms of the use and development of video games.

New technologies in information and communication technology are significantly impacting traditional business models, demonstrating how the relationship between the company and its corresponding value chain is changing in recent years due to the new possibilities they offer. The aim of this chapter is to analyze the current situation of Internet usage and electronic commerce in agri-food cooperatives in the province of Lleida, Spain. To this end, a questionnaire was completed by olive oil and sweet fruit cooperatives in 2010 that addressed the following aspects: computer equipment, Internet connection and presence, and finally, the level of electronic commerce. The results provide information on aspects to consider for ensuring that agricultural cooperatives take full advantage of the opportunities offered by new technologies, resulting in a useful tool for the managers of these organizations as well as for policy makers concerned with encouraging and promoting the social economy.

The concluding chapter of China’s Digital Nationalism retraces the central findings and arguments of the book. It first summarizes how digital discourses are managed in China today, and it then asks what implications digital nationalism has for the PRC and its regional relations. Following this discussion on East Asia, the chapter turns to more general findings about imagined communities and networked societies, and it summarizes how nationalism changes in a time of ubiquitous digital media use. Finally, the chapter concludes with a personal, normative assessment, which is that without serious rethinking on the part of policy-makers, information gate-keepers, tech innovators, and information and communication technology users, the twenty-first century is bound to again be a century of nations and nationalism, now filtered through the networks of neoliberal digital capitalism. Without intervention, this will be a parochial world, ultimately ill-equipped to handle the daunting challenges humanity faces today.

The article deals with one of the priority directions of social development - media education of students. Modern society is in a phase of intensive digital development, experiencing the en-hanced influence of media technologies being introduced into various spheres of educational life. The effectiveness of a person's functioning in the information age will largely depend on their readiness for continuous self-development and professional improvement in the context of a rapidly changing media reality. The active processes of convergence and digitalization direct the system of higher voca-tional education towards the search for new forms of training and development, which are based on the latest achievements in the field of information and communication technologies. The model of media educational development of students described by the authors corresponds to these processes and takes into account the specifics of the media space in the region. At the same time, media education is considered as one of the factors of professional compliance of fu-ture specialists with the innovative economy of the region. The author's model of media educational development of students includes the following components: information and communication environment of the university, media technologies built into the subjects of the curriculum and an advanced training program that takes into ac-count the directions of training. It is clarified that future journalists are being prepared for the role of a media educator and conducting media educational activities on the basis of those re-gional media which they will work for. Students of other directions of training in the course of mastering a media education course acquire skills in the field of media, what stimulates in them, as future professionals, a steady need for self-improvement and self-development, creativity and critical thinking in the digital environment. It is assumed that graduates who have mastered all the components of the media educa-tion model not only improve their professional competencies defined by the relevant standard, but also acquire additional skills, expressed in the ability to systematically work to improve their own and surrounding media culture. This kind of focus of educational efforts increases their competitiveness in the regional labor market.

The study of the „information environment – person“ relationship is becoming an increasingly important focus in the research repertoire. The informatization of the social environment is not an isolated phenomenon – it is interpreted as one of the functional characteristics of modern society. Although the „child-to-media environment“ relationship has been the subject of numerous studies, it is still attracting scientific interest. This interest is focused mainly on the specifics of the development of the modern child. Defining the multimedia environment as mediating individual socialization focuses on the multimodal functioning of new technologies. Taking into account this fact requires a new type of organization of the educational environment, aimed at the early development of multiliteracy for orientation in the processes of information and communication in the changing world.

This paper investigates the relationship between e-banking and commercial bank performance in Bangladesh. A five-year aggregate quarterly commercial bank data as provided by Payment System Department of Central Bank of Bangladesh was used in this study. A multiple regression procedure was used to determine the significance of the relationship between the independent variables (electronic banking indicators) and the profitability measures of return on assets (ROA) and return on equity (ROE) as the dependent variables. The findings were that only IB was statistically significant at 0.01% level under both ROA and ROE models with p-values of 0.0000 and 0.0000, respectively. However, the predictive power of ROE was found to be higher than ROA using adjusted r-square and d-statistic. Some of the other variables (POS, CHQ) were also statistically significant ([Formula: see text]) and the rest of variables had mixed result. The results show that at an aggregate level, commercial banks in Bangladesh widely use the traditional banking methods such as use of cheques. The results are expected to inform bank managers on the need to discover the optimal supply of electronic banking services such as MOB, EFT and ATM payment systems in order to improve bank profitability. This study will further inform policy makers on the need to improve on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in order to cater for optimal use of electronic banking service in Bangladesh.

There has been increased research interest in senior entrepreneurs and their potential contribution to the global economy. Nevertheless, the extant literature on senior entrepreneurship is often limited to considering some individual factors of entrepreneurship behavior without considering other factors linked to seniors’ environment. In this paper, we aim to understand the factors enhancing seniors to start a new business in Europe; factors linked to seniors’ environment — such as internet and information and communication technologies (ICT) diffusion, the level of status and respect of successful entrepreneurs, relaying information about successful new businesses in the media — and individual factors — such as gender, education, job position, income, skills —. The analysis is based on two main sources of data — the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) and Eurostat — using a non-balanced panel dataset corresponding to a sample of 11 European countries covering 2006–2013. Findings of this study indicate that both individual and environmental factors contribute to seniors’ entrepreneurial behavior. Technology diffusion, personal skills, acquaintances’ entrepreneurial experiences, media relaying information about successful new businesses, and the senior employment rate are important factors of seniors’ starting new businesses. The findings provide valuable insights for policy makers to promote seniors’ entrepreneurship and provide better support for seniors to pursue entrepreneurial success.

The issue of openness/secrecy has not received adequate attention in current discussion on the public sphere. Drawing on ideas in critical theory, political sociology, and cultural sociology this article explores the cultural and political dynamics involved in the public sphere in modern society vis-à-vis the practice of open/secret politics by the state. It argues that the media, due to their publicist quality, are situated at the interface between publicity and secrecy, which thereby allows for struggles over the boundary of state openness/secrecy in the public sphere. A theory of boundary politics is introduced that is contextualized in the relationship among state forms, the means of making power visible/invisible (media strategies), and symbolic as well as discursive practices in the public sphere. In explaining the dynamics of boundary politics over openness/secrecy, three ideal-types of boundary creation are conceptualized: open politics secrecy and leak. The theory is illustrated with a case study of the Patten controversy in Hong Kong.
