Estimates of daily smoking as high as 15 percent by Year 10 students (average age 15) suggest there is an urgent need to focus attention on the formulation of school-based cessation programs for young smokers, as an adjunct to existing prevention focused programs which serve the majority of young non-smokers. The purpose of this study was to gather recommendations from student smokers (in the middle high school years, about 15 years of age) which may be used in the design of school-based smoking cessation programs. This study investigated the opinions of 2865 smoking and nonsmoking Year 10 students drawn from twenty-one metropolitan high schools in Brisbane, Australia. The majority of students, including smokers, were supportive of school-based smoking cessation programs. Smokers reported a preference for the program to be voluntary, to be accessible during school time, and facilitated by other students or non-teaching personnel. A clear preference for individualized attempts to quit over more structured or group programs was evident. The majority of smokers reported that they preferred to quit on their own. They, however, also recognized the value of assistance from a supportive friend or being in a group of students who helped one other. In general, male and female students expressed the same preferences regarding methods of quitting. Males, however, appeared more difficult to motivate and more skeptical of quitting programs. Specific ideas for identifying students who may have higher support needs when quitting are provided.

AbstractIn American high schools female students put greater effort into school and outperform boys on indicators of academic success. Using data from the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009, we found female students’ greater academic effort and achievement was partly explained by different social incentives to trying hard in school experienced by male and female students. Males were 1.75 times as likely to report they would be unpopular for trying hard in school and 1.50 times as likely to report they would be made fun of for trying hard in school. Social costs to trying hard in school were directly associated with less rigorous mathematics course-taking and indirectly associated with lower GPA in STEM courses through lower academic effort.

AbstractThe aim of the current study was to examine how bullying by peers relates to self-esteem, school connectedness and motivation for academic success in an Australian high school. Questionnaires were completed by 975 students across years 7 to 12. As predicted, male students were subjected to more direct forms of bullying than female students. However, contrary to expectations, there were no significant differences between males and females in their reported experience of indirect forms of bullying. Also, students in the lower year levels of high school reported being bullied more frequently than students in high year levels. Findings supported predictions that students who were bullied by their peers at school tended to report having lower levels of self-esteem, feeling less connected to their peers, teachers and school, and being less motivated to perform well at school. These results may have implications for school-based intervention programs that are designed to reduce bullying behaviours.

The sample were obtained through random sample technique. The experimental group received instructions in integrated science using inquiry-based method of teaching whereas the control group were taught with the traditional method. The data were collected through the use of pretest- posttest research design and were analyze according to the research question for the study. The main research question for the study was: What is the effect of inquiry-based method of teaching on students’ achievement and retention of concepts in integrated science? The results from the study indicates that the students in the experimental group performed better than the students in the control group. The findings also show that students who were instructed with inquiry-based method have higher retention capacity than their counterpart students who were exposed to traditional method. There was a slightly gender disparity in the achievement and retention capacity of both male and female students taught integrated science with inquiry-based method in favour of the male. This means that inquiry-based method is very rewarding to students in terms of achievement and retention regardless of gender.

Gender differences in course enrollment in the high school are very pronounced. Most of the academic work on course enrollment has focused exclusively on class tracking and has ignored gender. This paper proposes a framework for looking at course “choice, ”and explores the way course choices are embedded in the social organization of gender and class categories both inside and outside the school.
