Background During the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau provided updates on the novel coronavirus and the government’s responses to the pandemic in his daily briefings from March 13 to May 22, 2020, delivered on the official Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) YouTube channel. Objective The aim of this study was to examine comments on Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau’s COVID-19 daily briefings by YouTube users and track these comments to extract the changing dynamics of the opinions and concerns of the public over time. Methods We used machine learning techniques to longitudinally analyze a total of 46,732 English YouTube comments that were retrieved from 57 videos of Prime Minister Trudeau’s COVID-19 daily briefings from March 13 to May 22, 2020. A natural language processing model, latent Dirichlet allocation, was used to choose salient topics among the sampled comments for each of the 57 videos. Thematic analysis was used to classify and summarize these salient topics into different prominent themes. Results We found 11 prominent themes, including strict border measures, public responses to Prime Minister Trudeau’s policies, essential work and frontline workers, individuals’ financial challenges, rental and mortgage subsidies, quarantine, government financial aid for enterprises and individuals, personal protective equipment, Canada and China’s relationship, vaccines, and reopening. Conclusions This study is the first to longitudinally investigate public discourse and concerns related to Prime Minister Trudeau’s daily COVID-19 briefings in Canada. This study contributes to establishing a real-time feedback loop between the public and public health officials on social media. Hearing and reacting to real concerns from the public can enhance trust between the government and the public to prepare for future health emergencies.

Purpose Governments worldwide are taking various measures to prevent the spreading of COVID virus. One such effort is digital contact tracing. However, the aspect of digital contact tracing was met with criticism, as many critics view this as an attempt of the government to control people and a fundamental breach of privacy. Using machine learning techniques, this study aims to deal with understanding the general public’s emotions toward contact tracing and determining whether there is a change in the attitude of the general public toward digital contact tracing in various months of crises. This study also analyzes the significant concerns voiced out by the general public regarding digital contact tracing. Design/methodology/approach For the analysis, data were collected from Reddit. Reddit posts discussing the digital contact tracing during COVID-19 crises were collected from February 2020 to July 2020. A total of 5,025 original Reddit posts were used for this study. Natural language processing, which is a part of machine learning, was used for this study to understand the sentiments of the general public about contact tracing. Latent Dirichlet allocation was used to understand the significant issues voiced out by the general public while discussing contact tracing. Findings This study was conducted in two parts. Study 1 results show that the percentage of general public viewing the aspect of contact tracing positively had not changed throughout the time period of Data frame (March 2020 to July 2020). However, compared to the initial month of the crises, the later months saw a considerable increase in negative sentiments and a decrease in neutral sentiments regarding the digital contact tracing. Study 2 finds out the significant issues public voices out in their negative sentiments are a violation of privacy, fear of safety and lack of trust in government. Originality/value Although numerous studies were conducted on how to implement contact tracing effectively, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study conducted with an objective of understanding the general public’s perception of contact tracing.

Sentiment or emotion behind a tweet from Twitter or a post from Facebook can help us answer what opinions or feedback a person has. With the advent of growing user-generated blogs, posts and reviews across various social media and online retails, calls for an understanding of these afore mentioned user data acts as a catalyst in building Recommender systems and drive business plans. User reviews on online retail stores influence buying behavior of customers and thus complements the ever-growing need of sentiment analysis. Machine Learning helps us to read between the lines of tweets by proving us with various algorithms like Naïve Bayes, SVM, etc. Sentiment Analysis uses Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing (NLP) to extract, classify and analyze tweets for sentiments (emotions). There are various packages and frameworks in R and Python that aid in Sentiment Analysis or Text Mining in general.

Accidents have become major issue in Developing countries like India now a day. As per the Surveys 60% of the accidents are happening due to over speed. Though the government has taken so many initiatives like Traffic Awareness & Driving Awareness Week etc.., but still the percentage of accidents are not getting reduced. In this paper a new technique has been introduced to reduce the percentage of accidents. The new technique is implemented using the concept of Machine Learning [1]. The Machine Learning based systems can be implemented in all vehicles to avoid the accidents at low cost [1]. The main objective of this system is to calculate the speed of the vehicle at three various locations based on the place where the vehicle speed must be controlled and if the speed is greater than the designated speed in that road then the vehicle automatically detects the problem and same will be intimated to the driver to control the speed of the vehicle. If the speed is less or equal to the designated speed in that road then the vehicle will be passed without any disturbance. The system will be giving beep sound along with color indication to driver in each and every scenario. The other option implemented in this system is if the driver is driving the vehicle in the night and if he feel drowsy the system detects it immediately and alarm sound will be initiated to wake up the driver. This system though it won’t avoid 100% accidents at least it will reduce the percentage of accidents. This system is not only to avoid accidents it will also intelligently control the speed of the vehicles and creates awareness amongst the drivers.

Author's age prediction is the task of determining the author's age by studying the texts written by them. The prediction of author’s age can be enlightening about the different trends, opinions social and political views of an age group. Marketers always use this to encourage a product or a service to an age group following their conveyed interests and opinions. Methodologies in natural language processing have made it possible to predict author’s age from text by examining the variation of linguistic characteristics. Also, many machine learning algorithms have been used in author’s age prediction. However, in social networks, computational linguists are challenged with numerous issues just as machine learning techniques are performance driven with its own challenges in realistic scenarios. This work developed a model that can predict author's age from text with a machine learning algorithm (Naïve Bayes) using three types of features namely, content based, style based and topic based. The trained model gave a prediction accuracy of 80%.

Internet provides a medium to connect with individuals of similar or different interests creating a hub. Since a huge hub participates on these platforms, the user can receive a high volume of messages from different individuals creating a chaos and unwanted messages. These messages sometimes contain a true information and sometimes false, which leads to a state of confusion in the minds of the users and leads to first step towards spam messaging. Spam messages means an irrelevant and unsolicited message sent by a known/unknown user which may lead to a sense of insecurity among users. In this paper, the different machine learning algorithms were trained and tested with natural language processing (NLP) to classify whether the messages are spam or ham.

Machine learning is the part of artificial intelligence that makes machines learn without being expressly programmed. Machine learning application built the modern world. Machine learning techniques are mainly classified into three techniques: supervised, unsupervised, and semi-supervised. Machine learning is an interdisciplinary field, which can be joined in different areas including science, business, and research. Supervised techniques are applied in agriculture, email spam, malware filtering, online fraud detection, optical character recognition, natural language processing, and face detection. Unsupervised techniques are applied in market segmentation and sentiment analysis and anomaly detection. Deep learning is being utilized in sound, image, video, time series, and text. This chapter covers applications of various machine learning techniques, social media, agriculture, and task scheduling in a distributed system.
