BACKGROUND The utility of peer learning in clinical skills is well recognized and researched given the many benefits gained, such as: enhanced learning, alleviation of the burden on faculty, and early development of teaching skills of future doctors. However, little is known in terms of its effectiveness as an assessment tool and the extent to which peer assessment can be relied upon in the absence of faculty support. OBJECTIVE This study was conducted to assess medical students' perception towards peer learning as a tool of assessment and compare peer to faculty evaluation of clinical skill performance. METHODS A cohort of 36 third year medical students were exposed to clinical skill's focused, same-level, peer learning for three months. A mixed method approach was adapted to collect data including students' perception of peer learning, performance scores, and reflective observational analysis. A five -point-Likert scale - Instrument was used to assess (n=28) students' perception on the value of peer learning. The students were asked to assess their peers using a pre-set checklist on clinical skill's performance and scores were compared to faculty assessment scores. Reflective observational data was collected from observing video recordings of some of the peer learning sessions. RESULTS Twenty five out of 28 students were completed the survey. Twenty students perceived peer-learning as valuable in clinical skills' education. The mean score of peers compared to faculty assessment was higher. There was a significant difference in student performance between the supervised teaching and peer learning groups with a (P =0.003). Observations have shown that most students focus on mastery of skill with little attention to the technique's quality. Also, students were unable to appreciate the relevance of potential clinical findings of physical examination. CONCLUSIONS Peer learning in clinical skills' teaching empowers the students to develop a more responsible approach towards their education. However, peer assessment is insufficient to evaluate clinical skills' performance in the absence of faculty support. Therefore, we recommend the presence of faculty to guide and supervise peer learning activities.

Introduction: Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) is considered a useful method of assessing clinical skills besides Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and clinical evaluations. Aim: To explore the acceptance of medical students to this assessment tool in medical education and to determine whether the assessment results of MCQs and faculty clinical evaluations agree with the respective OSCE scores of 4th year medical students (Med IV). Methods: performance of a total of 223 Med IV students distributed on academic years 2006-2007, 2007-2008, and 2008-2009 in OSCE, MCQs and faculty evaluations were compared. Out of the total 93 students were asked randomly to fill a questionnaire about their attitudes and acceptance of this tool. The OSCE was conducted every two months for two different groups of medical students who had completed their family medicine rotation, while faculty evaluation based on observation by assessors was submitted on a monthly basis upon the completion of the rotation. The final exam for the family medicine clerkship was performed at the end of the 4thacademic year, and it consisted of MCQsResults: Students highly commended the OSCE as a tool of evaluation by faculty members as it provides a true measure of required clinical skills and communication skills compared to MCQs and faculty evaluation. The study showed a significant positive correlation between the OSCE scores and the clinical evaluation scores while there was no association between the OSCE score and the final exam scores.Conclusion: Student showed high appreciation and acceptance of this type of clinical skills testing. Despite the fact that OSCEs make them more stressed than other modalities of assessment, it remained the preferred one.

Background: Providing appropriate teachings in the curriculum have a great impact on learning by the students. Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the clinical undergraduate medical students’ preferred teaching methods provided by the medical educators. Material and Methods: This study was conducted on 89 medical students in the 4th and 5th year of the Faculty of Medicine and Defense Health, National Defense University of Malaysia, from 1st November 2019 to 31st July 2020. Each of the students was approached with a structured questionnaire for their responses to determine their preferred teaching methods. Results: Out of 89 students, 46 were male (51.7%); the mean age of the study students was 23.5 years. Among the various teaching methods, bedside teaching was the most preferred (76.4%) one followed by lectures (14.6%), tutorials (7.9%) and seminars (1.1%). 66.3% of students would use e-learnings’ uploaded teaching materials, whereas the remainder would not. Bedside demonstrations of clinical skills by the tutors were preferred by 77.5% of students. Practicing clinical skills by the students on a real patient rather than on a mannequin or a simulated patient was preferred by 94.4% of students. Regarding case discussions, problem-based learnings (PBL) were preferred by 80% of students. Conclusions: Bedside teachings, demonstrations of clinical skill by a teacher, practicing skills by the students on a real patient rather than on a simulated patient or a mannequin, and PBLs are highly preferred by the students. Adequate teaching materials uploaded in the e-learning management system provide a good source for the teachings and learnings.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the perception of undergraduate students of United Medical and dental college towards objective structured clinical examination as an assessment tool. MATERIAL & METHODS: A cross-sectional observational study included undergraduate medical students, RESULTS: 153 students who completely filled the proforma were included in study among them 31% were male and 69% were females. Mostly agreed that stations in OSCE were simple and easily interpretable and assessed practical skills thoroughly. Majority of students accepted that skills inquired were taught in clinics, stations were according to course and stations were appropriately timed. 66 % confirmed that adequate instructions were provided before exam. 84.31% believed that OSCE is preferable to viva. 57.51% of candidates stated that examiners during OSCE were attentive and gracious but 20.91 % objected it , while 21.57% remained neutral. Almost half of examinees labelled it as comprehensive clinical assessment .Overall, 67.97 % perceived OSCE as demanding and tough assessment. Finally views of students for statement that OSCE is unbiased, reliable and valid were positive in 50.32%.There was a significant difference in the opinion of male and female( p-value is less than 0.05) in statement that OSCE thoroughly assessed practical skills, stations were according to course of instruction, Adequate instructions were provided before exam, superior and preferable to viva, assists in improvement of clinical skills, demanding and tough and finally OSCE was unbiased, reliable and valid CONCLUSION: OSCE was perceived as fair, comprehensive, un-biased format of examination but believed it was more stressful than traditional examination methods . Abstract Background Acute otitis media (AOM) is the most frequent indication for antibiotic treatment of children in the United States. Its diagnosis relies on visualization of the tympanic membrane, a clinical skill acquired through a deliberate approach. Instruction in pediatric otoscopy begins in medical school. Medical students receive their primary experience with pediatric otoscopy during the required pediatric clerkship, traditionally relying on an immersion, apprentice-type learning model. A better understanding of their preceptors’ clinical and teaching practices could lead to improved skill acquisition. This study investigates how pediatric preceptors (PP) and members of the Council on Medical Student Education in Pediatrics (COMSEP) perceive teaching otoscopy. Methods A 30-item online survey was administered to a purposeful sample of PP at six institutions in 2017. A comparable 23-item survey was administered to members through the 2018 COMSEP Annual Survey. Only COMSEP members who identified themselves as teaching otoscopy to medical students were asked to complete the otoscopy-related questions on the survey. Results Survey respondents included 58% of PP (180/310) and 44% (152/348) of COMSEP members. Forty-one percent (62/152) of COMSEP member respondents identified themselves as teaching otoscopy and completed the otoscopy-related questions. The majority agreed that standardized curricula are needed (PP 78%, COMSEP members 97%) and that all graduating medical students should be able to perform pediatric otoscopy (PP 95%, COMSEP members 79%). Most respondents reported usefulness of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) AOM guidelines (PP 95%, COMSEP members 100%). More COMSEP members than PP adhered to the AAP’s diagnostic criteria (pediatric preceptors 42%, COMSEP members 93%). The most common barriers to teaching otoscopy were a lack of assistive technology (PP 77%, COMSEP members 56%), presence of cerumen (PP 58%, COMSEP members 60%), time to teach in direct patient care (PP 46%, COMSEP members 48%), and parent anxiety (PP 62%, COMSEP members 54%). Conclusions Our study identified systemic and individual practice patterns and barriers to teaching pediatric otoscopy. These results can inform education leaders in supporting and enabling preceptors in their clinical teaching. This approach can be adapted to ensure graduating medical students obtain intended core clinical skills.

This study was designed to see whether electronic feedback positively affects medical students’ academic writing performance. Two groups of medical university students were randomly selected and participated in this study. In order to see whether the provision of electronic feedback for the compulsory academic writing course for medical students is effective, the researchers divided 50 medical students to the traditional (n=25) and intervention groups (n=25). Pre-test and post-test were conducted at the beginning and at the end of the semester. Electronic feedback was given to the medical students in the intervention group, while the medical students in the traditional group received the traditional pen and paper feedback. By comparing the scores of two written assignments at the beginning and the end of the semester, regarding the application of electronic feedback, the results showed that not only medical students’ overall writing performance improved after providing them electronic feedback, but every single writing component was also enhanced after the intervention. There was a significant difference in the post-test academic writing scores between the traditional and intervention groups (P < 0.001). This difference was not significant in our control group who was given pen-and-paper feedback. In terms of specific writing components, the most affected components in this approach were content followed by organization, language use, vocabulary, and sentence mechanics, respectively. Although this study focused on medical students’ academic writing ability and reported the effect of electronic feedback on medical students’ writing performance, electronic feedback can be equally beneficial for enhancing student-practitioners’ practical clinical skills.

Background: There are some studies about strategies for clinical skills teachers and criteria for effective teaching in a Skills lab. However, there isn’t an established instrument yet to evaluate clinical skills teacher’s didactical performance while facilitating skills learning. The aim of this study was to develop an appropriate instrument to evaluate clinical skills teachers’ didactical performance.Method: A preliminary instrument was developed based on recent available literatures. This instrument was applied by students, to quantitatively evaluate didactical performance of skills teachers who teach a certain skill. Then focus group discussions (FGD) were conducted. The results of both procedures were compared.Results: 255 first year medical students participated (response rate: 91%). There was significant difference between students’ judgments of clinical teacher’s (specialist) and Skills lab teacher’s (general practitioner) didactical performance (p<0.05). Cronbach’s alpha of the instrument turned out to be .95, indicating a high homogeneity. All items contributed to this measure of reliability. This quantitative finding was supported by qualitative resultsConclusion: The questionnaire developed is valid and reliable. It can be concluded that characteristics of a proper instrument for evaluating clinical skills teachers’ didactical performance encompass didactic skill, interpersonal & communication skills and condition/strategy of skills training.

Background: Due to constraints in time and resources, medical curricula may not provide adequate opportunities for pre-clerkship students to practice clinical skills. To address this, medical students at the University of Alberta developed a digital peer-to-peer learning initiative. The initiative assessed if students can learn clinical skills from their peers in co-curricular practice objective structured clinical exams (OSCEs).Methods: A total of 144 first-year medical students participated. Students wrote case scenarios that were reviewed by physicians. Students enacted the cases in practice OSCEs, acting as the patient, physician, and evaluator. Verbal and electronic evaluations were completed. A digital platform was used to automate the process. Surveys were disseminated to assess student perceptions of their experience.Results: Seventy-five percent of participants said they needed opportunities to practice patient histories and physical exams in addition to those provided in the medical school curriculum. All participants agreed that the co-curricular practice OSCEs met this need. The majority of participants also agreed that the digital platform was efficient and easy to use.Conclusion: Students found the practice OSCEs and digital platform effective for learning clinical skills. Thus, peer-to-peer learning and computer automation can be useful adjuncts to traditional medical curricula.

Introduction: Self-assessment is one of the methods of benchmarking dental graduates of the acquired skills  and identify the strengths and weaknesses of the current student and educational system. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the viewpoints of final-year students of Qazvin Dental School regarding their acquired clinical skills based on the educational program. Methods: The type of study was descriptive cross-sectional. In this study, the clinical skill level of dental students was evaluated using a 45-item questionnaire (from the skills of 9 clinical departments). Data were analyzed by SPSS software version 16 using t-test. Results: 24 students (10 males and 14 females) were included in the study. In general, the mean of students (out of 5 scores) was 3.41±0.30 which was in good level. There was a significant difference between the students' ability in different departments (P = 0.000). The highest ability was in endodontics (4.00) and the lowest in oral disease and diagnosis (2.98). There was no significant difference in total abilities between men and women, but the ability of women in the endodontics ward was higher than men (P = 0.002). Conclusion: The level of ability of the students from their point of view in this study was good. There was also a difference in the skills of girls and boys in educational settings. The results of this study can be used for evaluation of strengths and weaknesses and planning for promoting education in Qazvin Dental School.

Objective The study objective was to enhance clinical skills among undergraduate students majoring in clinical medicine in performing physical examination by establishing a novel platform for peer assessment of clinical skills. Methods A total 126 Year 2012 students majoring in medicine and receiving traditional training were assigned to the control group, and 126 Year 2013 students receiving instruction via the peer assessment platform of clinical skills were allocated to the study group. Scores of the physical examination, paper exam, and peer assessment were compared using a t-test, and we performed linear correlation analysis of the data. Results Scores of the physical examination and peer assessment among Year 2013 students (the study group) were significantly higher than those in the control group. Paper exam scores in the study group were also significantly higher than those in the controls. The three assessment scores did not differ significantly according to sex. Conclusions The peer assessment platform can not only improve medical students’ skills and capabilities in physical examination, it can also enhance their theoretical knowledge of basic clinical principles. We determined that sex was not related to the assessment scores obtained by medical students.

Introduction: Clinical skills refer to the skills required for a clinician to manage a complete patient encounter. Clinical skill laboratories provide the facility to medical students and medical staff to learn the clinical skills before applying them on patients. Objectives: To evaluate perception of medical students regarding skill lab training. Study Design: Cross -sectional study. Study Setting: Wah Medical College. Period: January 2017 to June 2017. Study Subject: Students of Final Year M.B.B.S. Sample Size: 114 students. Sampling Technique: Convenient sampling. Data Collection Procedure: With informed consent of participants, questionnaires were filled by students themselves. Questionnaire was comprised of two parts; first part comprised of demographic data, second part comprised of 18 questions to determine perception of medical students about skill lab training. The responses of 18 questions were measured on four-point Likert scale from strongly disagree to agree. Data Analysis: Data was analyzed by using SPSS version 19, frequencies and percentages were calculated. The Chi square- goodness of fit test for one sample was applied on various levels of agreement. The p value of less than 0.05 was considered as significant. Results: The mean age of 114 students was 23.4 years with minimum age of 21 years and maximum of 26 years. Male students were 45(39%) and 69(61%) were female students. Out of 114 medical students108 (94.8%) students preferred to practice in skill lab before performing it on patient and they also had an opinion that the mentor must be friendly and helpful during teaching. Among them 107 (93.9%) students desired that procedures in the skill lab should be performed by the mentors first in front of students and 103 (90.4%) students thought that training of practical skills improve their learning. Out of them 94(82.5%) students believed that skill lab training increased their motivation to become a doctor, 102 (89.5%) students thought that skill lab practice provides a feeling of security for learning process and 100 (87.7%) students had an opinion that it should be a compulsory part of medical curriculum and even it should be started from the first year of the medical education. P value of level of agreement of all the variables regarding perception about skill lab training was found to be < 0.001 which was statistically significant. Conclusion: The students believed that skill lab training is very useful for them and they preferred to practice on manikin before dealing with the patients.
