The objective of this study was to compare the effects of calf starters of different starch and fibre content on the growth, blood and rumen parameters of Holstein female calves during the pre-weaning period. A total of 60 calves were divided into two groups. Group A/B was fed according to a two-phase calf nutrition system: the calves received calf starter “A” (28.5% starch content, 16% neutral detergent fibre (NDF), 9.2% acid detergent fibre (ADF)) in days 7–45 and then calf starter “B” (14.2% starch content, 32.4% NDF, 14.3% ADF) in days 46–70. Calves of group B received calf starter “B” throughout the experimental period. The calves were weaned between 52 and 61 days of life. The data on body weight, weight gain, starter feed intake, blood metabolites and rumen fermentation parameters were collected individually. In the first phase of experiment, the starter feed consumption of A/B group was higher than that of B group (P < 0.05), but it did not manifest in differences in body weight at weaning time. At some of the sampling times, the different composition of starter diets significantly (P < 0.05) influenced the plasma urea, albumin, glucose and triglyceride concentrations. The consumption of diet with different starch and NDF content had no significant effect either on the composition of the rumen microbiota or on the ruminal concentration of volatile fatty acids (VFA) and ammonia. In some cases significant correlations (–0.83 and –0.93; 0.82 and 0.90) were found between the composition of rumen microbiota and ruminal VFA concentration. Feeding a diet of higher starch content (28.5 vs 14.2%) in the first 45 days of life did not affect rumen fermentation, rumen microbiota and the most important blood metabolites, apart from a few exceptions. The production parameters of calves, including total feed intake and body weight gain, were similar in the experiment.

ABSTRACT. (Effect of fermentation concentrate and water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) silage on feed consumption, weight gain, and blood chemistry of thin-tailed sheep) ABSTRAK. This study aimed to determine the effect of fermented concentrate and water hyacinth silage (Eichhornia crassipes) on feed consumption, weight gain, and blood chemistry of thin-tailed sheep. A total of 16 thin tailed-sheep were used in this study. The research design used was a completely randomized design with a factorial pattern consisting of 2 factors, namely: feed factor consisting of P0 (100% basal feed), P1 (80% basal feed and 20% fermented concentrate), P2 (70% basal feed, 10% concentrate fermentation, and 20% water hyacinth silage), P3 (60% basal feed, 10% fermented concentrate, and 30% water hyacinth silage) and sex factors (male and female). The research parameters observed were feed consumption, weight gain, protein, glucose, and cholesterol levels in the blood. The data obtained were analyzed by analysis of variance and continued with Duncan's Multiple Range Test. The results showed that sex differences had a very significant effect (P0.01) on feed consumption, weight gain, and blood cholesterol levels of thin-tailed sheep. Feed treatment had a very significant effect (P0.01) on weight gain but did not affect blood chemistry. In conclusion, the use of water hyacinth silage as a substitute for basal feed was able to increase feed consumption, a daily body weight of thin-tailed sheep, and did not affect livestock health when viewed from the blood chemistry components consisting of glucose, protein, and cholesterol levels.

Decreasing of land for agriculture pushed the exploiting of agricultural and industrialby-products for feedstuffs. Rice straw and “onggok” represent the by-products thatvery potential to use for feedstuffs. However these by-products have low digestionvalue for livestock. Therefore processing of the by-products before use is essensialto increase its quality. The experiment was conducted for 7 weeks to investigatethe effects of feeding diets containing rumen liquor treated-rice straw or rumenliquor treated-onggok on the performance of local male sheeps. Parametersmeasured were feed intake (g/head/day), weight gain (g/head/day), and feedconversion. Data from randomized complete block design were analized usingANOVA and if its showed significantly different contras ortogonal test was used. The result showed that the treatments significantly (P<0,05) affected feed intake, weight gain, and feed conversion. R2 and R3 treatments significantly (P<0,01)increased feed intake compared with R4 and R1 treatment, while between R2 andR3 treatments, and R1 and R4 treatments were not different. It can be concludedthat treament of rumen liquor to rice straw could improve its nutritive quality whichwas proved by good performance of sheeps fed diets containing rumen liquortreated rice straw.
