In early 2009 the Planets project undertook a survey of national libraries, archives, and other content-holding organisations in Europe to better understand the organisations' digital preservation activities and needs, and to ensure that Planets' technology and services are designed to meet them. Over 200 responses were received including a cross-section of major libraries and archives especially in Europe. The results provide a snapshot of organisations' readiness to preserve digital collections for the future. The survey revealed a high level of awareness of the challenges of digital preservation within organisations. Findings indicated that approximately half of those organisations surveyed have taken measures to develop digital preservation policies and to budget for it, while a majority have incorporated digital preservation into their organisational planning. Organisations predict that within a decade they will need to store large quantities of data in a wide range of formats from a variety of sources; three quarters of them are looking to invest in a solution within the next two years. However, the findings also point to varying degrees of readiness. Organisations with a digital preservation policy are significantly further advanced in their work to preserve digital collections for the long-term than others.

The article touches upon the importance of long-term digital preservation of Armenian cultural heritage through creation of digital repositories using Open-Source Software in Armenian libraries. The research highlights the advantages of Open-Source Software in context of providing free access to digital materials, as well as its high level of functionality in order to empower libraries with new technologies for more efficient organization and dissemination of information.

In recent decades, libraries, archives, and museums have created digital collections that comprise millions of objects to provide long-term access to them. One of the core preservation activities deals with the evaluation of appropriate formats used for encoding digital content. The development of science has entered the 4th paradigm, where data has become much more intensive than in the previous period. This situation raises new challenges in managing research data, especially related to data preservation in digital format, which allows research data to be utilized for the long term. The development of science in the 4th paradigm allows researchers to collaborate with and reuse research datasets produced by a research group. To take advantage of each other's data, there is a principle that must be understood together, namely the FAIR principle, an acronym for findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable.

The future of Cambridge University is discussed in the context of the current British and global situation of universities, the main focus being on what the core concerns of a major university should be at this time. After raising issues related to core intellectual values (truth-seeking, rationality in argument, balanced judgement, integrity, linguistic precision and critical questioning) and the sustaining of a long-term social and intellectual ecology, four main challenges are identified: uniting teaching and research fruitfully; interrelating fields of knowledge appropriately across a wide range of disciplines; contributing to society in ways that are responsible towards the long-term flourishing of our world; and sustaining and reinventing collegiality so that the university can be a place where intensive, disciplined conversations within and across generations can flourish. The latter leads into questions of polity, governance and management. Finally, the inseparability of teaching, research and knowledge from questions of meaning, value, ethics, collegiality and transgenerational responsibility leads to proposing ‘wisdom’ as an integrating concept. The relevant sources of wisdom available are both religious and secular, and in a world that is complexly both religious and secular we need universities that can be places where both are done justice. Given the seriousness and long-term nature of the conflicts associated with religious and secular forces in our world, it is especially desirable that universities in their education of future generations contribute to the healing of such divisions.

The Planning Act of 28 June 2006 prescribed that a reversible repository in a deep geological formation be chosen as the reference solution for the long-term management of high-level and intermediate-level long-lived radioactive waste. It also entrusted the responsibility of further studies and investigations on the siting and design of the new repository upon the French Radioactive Waste Management Agency (Agence nationale pour la gestion des de´chets radioactifs – Andra), in order for the review of the creation-licence application to start in 2015 and, subject to its approval, the commissioning of the new repository in 2025. In late 2009, Andra submitted to the French government proposals concerning the implementation and the design of Cige´o (Centre industriel de stockage ge´ologique). A significant step of the project was completed with the delineation of an interest zone for the construction of the repositor’s underground facilities in 2010. This year, Andra has launched a new dialogue phase with local actors in order to clarify the implementation scenarios on the surface. The selected site will be validated after the public debate that is now scheduled for the first half of 2013. This debate will be organized by the National Public Debate Committee (Commission nationale du de´bat public). In parallel, the State is leading the preparation of an territorial development scheme, which will be presented during the public debate. The 2009 milestone also constitutes a new step in the progressive design process of the repository. After the 1998, 2001 and 2005 iterations, which focused mainly on the long-term safety of the repository, the Dossier 2009 highlighted its operational safety, with due account of the non-typical characteristics of an underground nuclear facility. It incorporates the first results of the repository-optimisation studies, which started in 2006 and will continue in the future. The reversibility options for the repository constitute proposals in terms of added flexibility in repository management and in package-recovery levels. They orient the design of the repository in order to promote those reversibility components. They contribute to the dialogue with stakeholders in the preparation of the public debate and of the future act on the reversibility conditions of the repository. The development of the repository shall be achieved over a long period, around the century. Hence, the designer will acquire additional knowledge at every new development of the project, notably during Phase 1, which he may reuse during the following phase, in order, for instance, to optimise the project. This process is part of the approach proposed by Andra in 2009 pursuant to the reversibility principle.

The Chronopolis Digital Preservation Initiative, one of the Library of Congress’ latest efforts to collect and preserve at-risk digital information, has completed its first year of service as a multi-member partnership to meet the archival needs of a wide range of domains.Chronopolis is a digital preservation data grid framework developed by the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) at UC San Diego, the UC San Diego Libraries (UCSDL), and their partners at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Colorado and the University of Maryland's Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (UMIACS).Chronopolis addresses a critical problem by providing a comprehensive model for the cyberinfrastructure of collection management, in which preserved intellectual capital is easily accessible, and research results, education material, and new knowledge can be incorporated smoothly over the long term. Integrating digital library, data grid, and persistent archive technologies, Chronopolis has created trusted environments that span academic institutions and research projects, with the goal of long-term digital preservation.A key goal of the Chronopolis project is to provide cross-domain collection sharing for long-term preservation. Using existing high-speed educational and research networks and mass-scale storage infrastructure investments, the partnership is leveraging the data storage capabilities at SDSC, NCAR, and UMIACS to provide a preservation data grid that emphasizes heterogeneous and highly redundant data storage systems.In this paper we will explore the major themes within Chronopolis, including:a) The philosophy and theory behind a nationally federated data grid for preservation. b) The core tools and technologies used in Chronopolis. c) The metadata schema that is being developed within Chronopolis for all of the data elements. d) Lessons learned from the first year of the project.e) Next steps in digital preservation using Chronopolis: how we plan to strengthen and broaden our network with enhanced services and new customers.

AbstractMost countries intend to dispose of their high-level radioactive wastes by converting them into a solidified wasteform which is to be buried within the earth. SYNROC is a titanate ceramic wasteform which has been designed for this purpose on the basis of geochemical principles. It comprises essentially rutile TiO2, ‘hollandite’ Ba(Al,Ti)Ti6O16, zirconolite CaZrTi2O7, and perovskite CaTiO3. The latter three phases have the capacity to accept the great majority of radioactive elements occurring in high-level wastes into their crystal lattice sites. These minerals (or their close relatives) also occur in nature, where they have demonstrated their capacity to survive for many millions of years in a wide range of geological environments. The properties of SYNROC and the crystal chemistry of its constituent minerals are reviewed in some detail and current formulations of SYNROC are summarized. A notable property of SYNROC it its extremely high resistance to leaching by groundwaters, particularly above 100°C. In addition, it can be shown that the capacity of SYNROC minerals to immobilize high-level waste elements is not markedly impaired by high levels of radiation damage. Current investigations are focused on developing a satisfactory production technology for SYNROC and progress towards this objective is described. The high leach resistance of SYNROC at elevated temperatures increases the range of geological environments in which the waste may be finally interred; in particular, SYNROC is well adapted for disposal in deep drill-holes, both in continental and marine environments. The fact that SYNROC is comprised of minerals which have demonstrated long-term geological stability is significant in establishing public confidence in the ability of the nuclear industry to immobilize high-level wastes for the very long periods required.

Purpose This paper aims to verify the implementation of digital preservation policies at the institutional repositories (IRs) of Brazilian Federal Universities. Design/methodology/approach The methodology used involved the verification of the information available in the Directory of Open Access Repositories (OpenDOAR) and on the websites of the IRs, to confirm the existence of published digital preservation policies. In this study, a sample of the 26 IRs of Brazilian Federal Universities registered with OpenDOAR, which represents 68 per cent of these repositories, was used. Findings The main conclusion is that the IRs of these universities do not have any published digital preservation policies, even though some repositories state their intention of preserving digital material in their institutional information policy. Originality/value The stakeholders of IRs need to implement a programme to guide their activities to preserve digital materials in the long term. In fact, similar to examples worldwide, this programme should take the form of an institutional commitment outlined in a digital preservation policy. IRs at Brazilian Federal Universities still have a long way to go to guarantee access to digital materials in the long term.

Abstract. Uncertainties have a significant influence on the assessment and evaluation of the safety of a repository system for high-level radioactive waste. Significant reasons for uncertainties concerning the safety barriers of a repository are: Conducting experiments on the long-term behaviour of the repository in real time is impossible due to the long assessment period over which the repository is supposed to ensure safety. The extrapolation of results from time-limited experiments, e.g. on the corrosion of container materials, to other temporal dimensions is associated with uncertainties. Uncertainties also stem from differences between experimental situations, e.g. laboratory experiments, and the real conditions in the repository. The interpretation of empirical results can be ambiguous and therefore associated with uncertainties. The development of future impacts on the barriers can only be predicted to a limited extent. Therefore, the future behaviour of the barriers can only be extrapolated into the future to a limited extent on the basis of experience gained in the past and uncertainties remain. The construction and operation of the repository will disturb its natural environment. The geological environment in which the repository is embedded behaves differently from a natural geological system, which in turn is associated with uncertainties. A major source of uncertainties is also the natural inhomogeneity of the geological barrier, which can only be investigated on a sample basis. During excavation and other construction work underground, unforeseen situations are to be expected, which make it necessary to act situationally. The complexity of the disposal path where decisions are interlinked, creates further uncertainties. Last but not least, it is uncertain what further findings on the safety of the repository will be obtained in the future along the disposal path. For safety studies, especially studies on the long-term safety of repository systems, methods and conventions for dealing with uncertainties have become established internationally. In the site selection process, these methods and conventions are questioned and, if necessary, must be further developed so that they ultimately also convince the interested public and scientists from other disciplines. In the workshop, uncertainties will be examined in particular from the perspectives of a civil engineer and of a materials researcher with introductory presentations. This will be followed by a moderated discussion. The workshop will focus on the preliminary safety investigations; however, the discussion can also refer to later phases of the disposal path. The aim of the discussion is to arrive at a common synthesis: Where have good practices for dealing with uncertainties already been established? Where is there still a need for research and clarification? What needs to be considered in the dialogue with the interested public?

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common heart rhythm disorder requiring treatment and is associated with an increased rate of hospitalization and death. When choosing the tactics of restoring and maintaining sinus rhythm in most patients with AF paroxysm without pronounced organic heart damage, the drug of choice is propafenone, which has a high level of safety and efficacy. The use of the drug within the framework of a «pill in a pocket» by the patient himself, intravenously in a day hospital of an outpatient medical institution or by an ambulance team allows stopping AF paroxysm in most patients at the prehospital stage. Propafenone is also the drug of choice for inpatient sinus rhythm restoration and for long-term antiarrhythmic therapy in a wide range of patients with AF.
