Taking Marx’s analysis as the point of departure, and drawing on a range of concrete examples, this article argues that rather than concentrating on the “new” forms of social and economic intercourse animated by digital media, and especially internet-enabled mobile devices, critical analysis needs to trace the ways in which digital consumption is intensifying the progressive integration of marketing, marketplaces, and forms of payment that have been central to the generation of surplus value and the maintenance of “business as usual,” from the emergence of the modern consumer system at the turn of the twentieth century.Cet article a recours d’abord à l’analyse de Marx puis à un éventail d’exemples concrets pour soutenir que l’analyse critique, plutôt que de se concentrer sur de « nouvelles » formes d’interaction sociale et économique engendrées par les médias numériques, y compris en particulier parmi ces derniers les appareils mobiles avec accès internet, a besoin de recenser les manières dont la consommation numérique est en train d’intensifier l’intégration graduelle du marketing, des marchés et des modes de paiement qui ont été au centre de la création de plus-value et du maintien du statu quo à partir de l’émergence du système de consommation moderne au début du vingtième siècle.

Domestic craft-based textile activities, such as knitting, crochet, hand weaving and lace making, are often viewed as being of limited creative potential. The perceived lack of creativity arises, in part, out of the extent to which these activities copy, reproduce and re-create existing pattern forms and use preexisting templates. This paper reports on the findings of an experimental research project that explored the creative potential of crochet lace making using digital media, technologies and practices. It provides critical analysis of how new technologies, practices and theoretical frameworks have implications for ongoing domestic craft-based textile activities.

This article undertakes a critical analysis of subjectivity and exposes the metaphysical and anthropocentric quasi-transcendental conditions that give rise to the construct(ion) of the Subject. I locate a critical moment for the metaphysical Subject in the work of Martin Heidegger which, whilst sadly not sustained in his later writings, provides a point of departure for an examination of the significance that animality plays in the metaphysical tradition and its constitutive relation to the construct of subjectivity. I discern this relation to be violent and sacrificial and draw on Jacques Derrida's nonanthropocentric ethics against the background of Drucilla Cornell's ethical reading of deconstruction to construct a critique of approaches that assimilate animals to the traditional model of subjectivity in order to represent their identity and interests in the legal paradigm. The main argument that I seek to advance is that such an approach paradoxically re-constructs the classical humanist subject of metaphysics and re-establishes the subject-centred system that silences the call of the animal Other, thereby solidifying and extending the legitimacy of a discourse and mode of social regulation that is fundamentally anthropocentric. I examine how we can address, incapacitate and move beyond this schemata of power through a rigorous deconstruction of the partitions that institute the Subject and how deconstruction clears a space for a de novo determination of the animal "subject" that can proceed from different sites of nonanthropocentric interruption. What follows is a call to refuse the mechanical utilisation of traditional legal constructs and I argue in favour of an approach to the question of the animal (in law) that identifies and challenges anthropocentrism as its critical target. I ultimately propose a critical engagement with the underlying metaphysical support of animal rights at a conceptual level, rather than simply utilising the law pragmatically as an instrument of immediate resolution.

The use of mobile devices, especially, by teens has been looked at with much apprehension and suspicion with some saying that it can be used to acquire information which can be detrimental to their social and psychological growth. Some teachers complain that it affects teens' studies as these teenagers stay up late in the night browsing, chatting, watching movies and playing games which cause them to sleep in class or pay little attention because of tiredness. In Ghana students in public schools up to Senior High School are not allowed to use personal mobile phones, laptops and other mobile gadgets in school because of implications such as those enumerated above. On the other hand, some, including those in prominent positions in government, have called for a rethink of such a directive by the Ministry of Education. This chapter critically looks into previous literature on the use of mobile devices in the classroom and suggests ways in which it can be effectively used to advance academic work in the classroom.

Even though digital systems have many advantages over traditional analogue systems, end users expect that they will not loose any functionality in the transition. Concretely, capabilities of video cassette recorders (VCR) should be ported to stand alone digital media players (e.g., DVD players) and streaming services (e.g., digital TV and VoD services). Those capabilities are usually known as interactive playout or, simply, digital VCR functionality. Typical VCR features are random access, pause/resume, reverse play, fast forward/ backward, and slow motion. Random access and pause/resume functionalities are relatively easy to implement in digital systems. On the other hand, video coding techniques and bandwidth restrictions severely complicate the implementation of the other VCR operations. Usually, VCR capabilities apply only to video streams. In interactive playout mode, audio streams are commonly discarded. Also, the quality of video streams in interactive mode may be downgraded due to system limitations.

This is the age of AI. Soon what customers think will be understood by the smart applications on their mobile devices and the information—most of which will be pre-processed based on the customer personas—will be available at the blink of an eye. In this chapter a critical analysis of how AI bolsters CRM capabilities in the airline industry is conducted. To understand that, AI capabilities are surveyed and its transformational effects on CRM and its impact on customer acquisition, retention, loyalty, and experience are explored in depth. In the end, a customer journey-based deployment framework is presented that supports the finding of the AI-CRM implementation use cases.

A critical analysis of outsourcing studies dating from the mid-1980s to the present lays the groundwork for a new understanding of its rationale. Relying on the idea of production in contemporary capitalism as involving both labor and valorization processes, this approach explains outsourcing as arising from the requirements of capitalist accumulation. Un análisis crítico de los estudios de tercerización que datan de mediados de la década de 1980 hasta el presente sienta las bases para una nueva comprensión de su lógica. Basado en la idea de que la producción en el capitalismo contemporáneo involucra procesos tanto de trabajo como de valorización, este enfoque explica que la subcontratación surge de los requerimientos de la acumulación capitalista.

In this article, we explore the day-to-day importance of digital media, specifically the use of mobile phones in the lives of migrant minors—also known as unaccompanied foreign minors—in juvenile residential centres. For this study, we employed a general ethnographic methodology and, in particular, a workshop based on different artistic techniques that encouraged the young people involved to become active participants, committed from the start in the generation of the material to be used for the analysis of their daily practices. This approach emerged from the recognition of the importance for these young people to feel included and connected. Migrant adolescents take refuge in their mobile devices to participate in the youth microculture, both locally and globally. In addition, they are able to access different social networks that allow them to play out the personas they wish to adopt. Finally, we recognise the importance of digital media in allowing them to maintain close and affective relationships with their relatives, fellow citizens, and communities in their country of origin.

This article presents findings from an empirical study of repertoires of contention and communication engaged during anti-austerity protests by the Indignados in Spain, the precarious generation in Italy, and the Aganaktismenoi in Greece. Drawing on 60 semi­structured interviews with activists and independent media producers involved in the 2011 wave of contention, we bring together social movement and communications theoretical frameworks to present a comparative critical analysis of digital protest media imaginaries. After examining the different socio-political and protest media contexts of the three countries translocally, our critical analysis emphasizes the emergence of three different imaginaries: in Spain the digital protest media imaginary was technopolitical, grounded in the politics and political economies of communication technologies emerging from the free culture movement; in Italy this imaginary was techno-fragmented, lacking cohesion, and failed to bring together old and new protest media logics; and finally in Greece it was techno-pragmatic, envisioned according to practical objectives that reflected the diverse politics and desires of media makers rather than the strictly technological or political affordances of the digital media forms and platforms. This research reveals how pivotal the temporal and geographical dimensions are when analyzed using theoretical perspectives from both communications and social movement research; moreover it emphasizes the importance of studying translocal digital protest media imaginaries as they shape movement repertoires of contention and communication; both elements are crucial to better understanding the challenges, limitations, successes and opportunities for digital protest media.

The consumption of media content via mobile devices is growing fast and surpasses the typical until recently access to digital media via computer. This makes mobile devices the main technology used by the audience for receiving media content. The following text examines the tendencies and new practices for media narrative creation, meant to be used entirely via mobile devices. The research was conducted in two phases – analysis of the current situation regarding the use of mobile devices for accessing news content in Bulgarian and around the world; and case studies, describing new types of narrative that emerged because of the audience needs and the specifics of using smart devices for news.

A luta pela Educação do Campo tem sido uma constante ao longo da história do Brasil. Entretanto, ainda é necessário avançarmos no debate desta temática para que se alcance uma educação de qualidade direcionada a realidade do campo. A escola do campo possui um papel fundamental atuando como uma das principais formas de se manter os estudantes rurais no campo, promovendo a reprodução social desses sujeitos. Neste sentido, esse texto busca contribuir para o debate e dialogo sobre a construção da educação no e do campo a partir de uma análise crítica das leis, diretrizes e bases que constituem a educação do campo no território brasileiro.AbstractThe struggle for Rural Education Consolidation has been a constant throughout of the history of Brazil. However, it is still necessary to advance the discussion of this issue in order to reach a targeted quality education reality of the field. The Rural school has a key role acting as one of the main ways to keep rural students in the field by promoting the social reproduction of these subjects. In this sense, this text seeks to contribute to the debate and dialogue on the construction of education in the field and from a critical analysis of laws, guidelines and bases that make up the Rural Education in Brazil.Keywords:Rural Education; Rural Education; Teaching
