Background: Interprofessional Learning (IPL) is an educational process intended to equip health and social care students with appropriate knowledge, skills, and attitudes for effective interprofessional working. By and large, the literature review highlighted in this article has shown that IPL is a worthwhile pursuit, with some studies highlighting conflicts over best teaching methods to use. In response, the aim of this exploratory research was to improve understandings of teaching strategies perceived by IPL lecturers to enhance students' formulation of multidisciplinary roles. Methods: An exploratory qualitative study was carried out. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, with a purposive sample of 4 consenting IPL lecturers. The objectives of the study were to extend understandings of strategies believed to enhance or inhibit students' accurate assimilation of Allied Health Professional (AHP) roles, to nurture awareness of potential obstacles that may inhibit successful delivery of IPL, to promote insight into what constitutes quality delivery of IPL, and to identify potential topics for further research.Findings: Five themes emerged from the data: (1) IPL lecturers hold contrasting viewpoints about the need for IPL; (2) improved understanding of roles is directly proportional to time spent with AHPs; (3) perspectives differ about when and where IPL should be taught; (4) stereotyping and negative attitudes inhibit accurate role construction; and (5) positive role modelling by lecturers is important. Conclusions: This article acts in a conscience-raising manner and highlights five key areas of lecturers' understandings about how to effectively deliver IPL. This nurtured awareness will be used to develop and evaluate new implementations in IPL and education.

BACKGROUND Role modelling exponentially affects the attitude and behaviours of medical students and act as a key factor in developing professional attributes in them. Medical students observe role models and learn from them more than through formal teaching. This study investigates the determining elements that make a teacher a role model, so that role modelling can be used as an effective educational tool. METHODS A qualitative exploratory study was conducted on fifth year medical students of three medical colleges of Lahore, Pakistan. Fifteen, telephonic, semi structured interviews were included in the study. Thematic analysis was done by manual coding of transcribed interviews. RESULTS A total of 374 codes were generated in the first cycle of coding, that were further merged to 42 in the second cycle. These codes led to 5 subthemes that finally emerged as two themes. The first theme was “Finding ways around their blaring blunders - are we blind?” highlighting the attributes of negative role models which include humiliation of students and juniors, poor teaching and communication skills, lack of empathy for patients and unethical relationship with pharmaceutical industry. The second theme was “Walking the Line” focusing on the components of positive role modelling like formal workplace attire, candid approach in teaching, strategic dealing with students, empathetic attitude towards patients and prioritising fair treatments. CONCLUSIONS Medical education is not only about acquisition of new knowledge and skills but is also about acquiring physician’s character and identity. The study findings suggest that the medical students pay attention to both positive and negative attributes of their teachers and their influence on promoting professionalism and character development. It is suggested that both teachers and administrators should understand the significance of role models and advocate excellence in role modelling. Despite reform efforts to involve parents, parent–school relationships in urban districts are rare. This qualitative study used a constructivist grounded theory approach to gain an understanding of how parent social networks, specifically relationships with other parents in the school, influence parent perceptions of their role in the educational process and their efficacy to fulfill perceived roles. Findings suggest that parents have differing perceptions about their role and differences in efficacy for involvement; however, relationships with other parents are important resources for role construction and efficacy, and may serve to lessen the disconnect between parents and schools in high-poverty districts.

Background: Meeting the needs of relatives when a family member is dying can help facilitate better psychological adjustment in their grief. However, end of life experiences for families are likely to have been deleteriously impacted by the COVID-19 crisis. Understanding how families’ needs can be met during a global pandemic will have current/future relevance for clinical practice and policy. Aim: To explore relatives’ experiences and needs when a family member was dying during the COVID-19 pandemic. Design: Interpretative qualitative study using semi-structured interviews. Data were analysed thematically. Setting/participants: A total of 19 relatives whose family member died during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United Kingdom. Results: In the absence of direct physical contact, it was important for families to have a clear understanding of their family member’s condition and declining health, stay connected with them in the final weeks/days of life and have the opportunity for a final contact before they died. Health and social care professionals were instrumental to providing these aspects of care, but faced practical challenges in achieving these. Results are presented within three themes: (1) entering into the final weeks and days of life during a pandemic, (2) navigating the final weeks of life during a pandemic and (3) the importance of ‘saying goodbye’ in a pandemic. Conclusions: Health and social care professionals can have an important role in mitigating the absence of relatives’ visits at end of life during a pandemic. Strategies include prioritising virtual connectedness and creating alternative opportunities for relatives to ‘say goodbye’.

Abstract Purpose Preparation for end of life is one of the greatest challenges faced by parents with cancer who have dependent children (< 18 years old), with requirement for support from professionals. The aim of this study is to explore how parents can be best supported in relation to their children, when a parent is at end of life from cancer. Methods This is an interpretive qualitative study, using 79 semi-structured interviews with parents at end of life (n3), bereaved parents (n21), health and social care professionals (HSCPs) (n32) and funeral directors (n23). Data were analysed thematically and triangulated. Results Parents are central to preparing their children for the death of a parent. Striving for everyday ordinariness, maximising social networks, maintaining hope and making preparations for the future are helpful for families when a parent is at end of life. Most HSCPs were unaware of the challenges faced by parents at end of life, and psychosocial support was often left outside the caring realm. As a result, funeral directors noted complexities faced by the families after the death. Results are discussed under four themes: (1) communication with the children as a process, (2) coping throughout the unfolding end of life experience, (3) tension and complexities at end of life and (4) preparing for the future. Conclusions Parents should be reassured that by involving the children early in the end of life experience when the ill-parent is ‘well enough’ to parent enables them to be actively involved in supporting their child through one of the greatest life changing event. A number of recommendations are discussed for professionals.

Aim: To explore, understand and interpret the lived experiences of the smoking cessation process and the meaning participants attach to their experiences of the cessation process. A qualitative exploratory study of the lived experiences of people who have stopped smoking can generate useful information that specifies the supportive factors that can be taken into consideration when planning smoking cessation interventions. Study Design: A qualitative study design using an interpretive phenomenological approach was adopted in this study to explore the smoking cessation experiences of the participants. Place and Duration of Study: School of Health and Social Care, London South Bank University, London, UK. Methodology: An exploratory phenomenological study was conducted with seven participants. A qualitative semi-structured interview guide was developed by the researcher after a preliminary review of significant literatures and in line with other standardised schedules. All face-to-face semi-structured interviews with participants were audio recorded and transcribed verbatim. All interview transcripts were analyzed using the interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA) method. Results: Based on IPA method, ten themes emerged and these were put together into two groups. The first group of themes are the participant’s experiences of the smoking cessation process. All the participants narrated experiences of symptoms due to Nicotine withdrawal. Also, experiences of their social environment, relapse as well as loneliness and boredom, emerged as themes. The second group of themes explored how participants made sense of their smoking cessation experiences. All the participants expressed how they made sense of their feelings, understood their situation and coped with their cessation experiences which they termed a difficult process. Also, confidence, self-regulation, motivation, feelings of fear and the importance of time, emerged as themes. Conclusion and Recommendation: According to participants, the smoking cessation process is a difficult process due to the many challenges and barriers associated with it. Therefore, the importance of self-confidence, motivation and social support cannot be overemphasized for a successful cessation. However, further research is recommended with respect to gender and the smoking cessation process.

In the pedagogical process, lack of motivation becomes a controversial issue. In this qualitative study, the researcher intended to explore the best motivational teaching strategies from the perspectives of the EFL teachers at Buraimi University College (henceforth BUC) in Oman. Purposeful sampling was used in the selection of five EFL teachers in English language department at BUC. The protocol of interview (semi-structured interviews) was conducted for data collection. The obtained data provided by the participants was analysed using qualitative thematic analysis to answer the questions and accomplish the objective of the present study. The findings revealed that motivational strategies would not be applicable in any classroom without creating a helpful, interactive, engaging, and enjoyable environment. The participants of the current study believe in the vital role of playing games in stimulating the interest and enthusiasm of learners as well as giving fun and energetic environment. Besides, it is essential to inspire students with the feelings of a sense of accomplishment through helping them to set realistic goals according to their learning abilities and observe their progress once in a while. However, in any learning environment developing motivation is a difficult task for the teachers because students learn differently and every student is diverse in her way.
