Linguistically, the word ‘language’ has shifted into ‘discourse’ which is a social phenomenon not only to express the thoughts but also to reflect the mindset and contexts of a specific community. The purpose of this study is to examine the slogans written on Pakistani automobiles and to understand the logic behind the social and cultural affiliations of these slogans. Pakistani culture of the art of making pictures and written phrases, poetic verses and imperative sentences on vehicles is famous all over the world. The study has analysed the writings found on vehicles, and although these writings might look trivial on the automobiles, they address various social issues. The Three-Dimensional Model of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) by Fairclough (2001) is used as a theoretical framework that explains the study at three levels: lexical, syntactic patterns, interpretations, and social practices. The discourses written on the vehicles are characterised into different categories, which are life’s mission statements, loud messages, mind baffling messages, everyday life annoyances, provoking statements, and religious looms. Twenty images and pictures have been captured from vehicles as a random sample of this study. The results reveal the mindset behind these discourses. They are used to highlight social issues which Pakistan faces, being a developing country. In short, the study discloses the strong link between the vehicles and the people using them to convey messages to the society which can bring harmony among the public. The current study is limited to only Pakistani motor vehicles.

Kata Kunci: Media, Analisis Wacana Kritis, Veronica Koman AbstractThe purpose of this research was to identify the representation of Veronica Koman who was formed by suarapapua.com in reporting the conflict (with LPDP) regarding the refund of the scholarship. This article deals with the investigation of the existence of postcolonial discourse in Coogler’s Black Panther (2018). The study aims to reveal and examine the existence of social issues related to Bhabha’s notion of postcolonialism represented through visual and linguistic elements in the movie. Fairclough’s (1989,2001, 2010) Critical Discourse Analysis, Kress and van Leeuwen’s (2006) Reading Images, Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics (2004) and Bhabha’s (1994) Postcolonialism are used to conduct this research. The result of the study shows that postcolonial discourse is proved represented in the movie. The findings imply that the post colonialism affects the characters in term of how they see and reflect themselves towards the dominance. They are also identified as possessing hybrid identity, ambivalence, and mimicry. It seems that the result of the research opposes the director’s intention to bring the theme of the movie. Theoretically, it is proved that the social irregularities representing black supremacy and exploitation of the citizen of Africa, Wakanda, is depicted in the movie. Empirically, the existence of nondemocratic social practices in black citizens is also seen in the movie.

Since people are showing more interest recently in movies and as movie reviews of the same movie could vary in the degree of their objectivity, this paper seeks to answer why movie reviews may differ in their evaluation of the same work. To this end, a critical discourse analysis using Fairclough’s three-dimensional framework and Martin and White’s attitude framework is carried out to analyze two reviews of the Saudi movie Wadjda, one written in English by a western critic, and the other is Arabic written by a Saudi critic. The textual analysis of attitudinal expressions shows that the English text maintains an even distribution between the negative and positive expressions, and most of the negative expressions do not assess the aspects of the movie but rather the Saudi society. In the Arabic text, however, the negative expressions outnumber the positive ones, and they are mostly related to the movie and the director. Using Fairclough’s framework, the author explains the findings of the textual analysis of the English review and the critic’s avoidance of negative evaluation as a result of Eurocentrism and the way the western media represent Arabs and Muslims. However, the negative appraisal of several movie aspects found in the Arabic review could be seen as a result of the critic being part of the society and, thus, not distracted by the social issues.

The present study aims to investigate female Disney characters’ linguistic features in the 1990’s. It studies sexist ideologies manifested through these characters’ language. The sample consists of three Disney animated movies from the 1990’s: Mulan, Beauty and the Beast and Pocahontas. The frameworks adopted to study female Disney characters’ language are Lakoff’s (2004b) forms of women’s language and Fairclough’s (1995) three-dimensional approach to CDA. The findings revealed that the linguistic features that mostly characterized female Disney characters’ language were hypercorrect grammar, super polite forms and hedges. They reflect the sexist stereotypicality of women’s language being slang-free and polite. They also used large stock of words related to their specific interests, empty adjectives and intensive ‘so’, which imply having stereotypical lexicon. The least linguistic feature used was tag questions. However, when used, they implied anticipation of being corrected by others. Keywords: Critical Discourse Analysis, Disney, Gender, Women’s language.

Critical discourse analysis (CDA) is a form of reflective inspection of how discourses shape and influence us. It has been applied widely especially in political discourses which analyzes the potential characteristics of language and the social and cultural background generated in the text, committed to exposing the complex relationship between language, power and ideology with the aid of critical thinking. Generally, the theoretical framework of CDA is based on Halliday’s systemic functional linguistics. Halliday believes that language has three metafunctions, namely ideational function, interpersonal function and textual function. These three achievements meet the needs of language users in three aspects including the description of the experience of objective world, the construction of social relations and the organization of discourse. As an important theory in systemic functional grammar, transitive system embodies the ideational function of language, which expresses people’s real world experiences and the inner world in several processes. In addition, this kind of theory is based on the semantic configuration of Actor+Process. Therefore, this paper will make a critical discourse analysis of Donald Trump’s inauguration speech in 2017 from the aspect of linguistic transitive system. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the language skills used by Mr.Trump and the discourse generating patterns of his presidential image, so that we can explore the ideology reflected behind the language and dig into the process of building the image of the president of the United States in Donald Trump’s inauguration speech.
