Cidadania. Solidariedade. Participação Social. The subject of the research are the form and the content of senior citizens’ lifelong education that is aimed at preserving their active life style and enriching their intrapersonal potential. The article gives the social-pedagogical model of lifelong uducation of elderly people that corresponds to their needs, and describes  the author's conceptual basis (openness of education, voluntariness, focus on the learners’ needs) and the content of the model (giving knowledge, developing skills, interaction and self-development training). The methods of the research are modeling and pedagogical natural experiment. The five-year experience of implementing the model of senior citizens’ lifelong education in the form of  "University of the Third Age" allows the authors to conclude that it is effective. In the students’ opinion, the educational programs of "University of the Third Age" meet their cognitive needs, provide their social integration, help them to maintain active life style, increase their satisfaction with the quality of their life. Thus, higher educational institutions can and should become the place where senior citizens can get education and training.

Particulary in Europe, the issue of the «cognitive society» has gained interest since the publication of «Enseñar y aprender: hacia la sociedad cognitiva (Teaching and Learning: Aiming at the Cognitivy Society). The main purpose of this paper is to show the most relevant features and demands of this kind of society in relation to a group of people that is steadily growing in number: senior citizens (also named as the «Third Age»).Within this context, we having studied the relations between the cognitive society and the demography, it can be said that the number of elderly people in the community is indeed growing. Together with this sociological phenomenon, and based on the belief in the need for continuous formation we analyse the problem of this «life-long learning» formation process. Of course, our idea of formation throughout life has a humanistic and democratic character, which is very different from the neoliberal vision, based on the unilateral proposal of the human capital. With this educational proposal in mind, throughout the article we will comment on the various programmes created for the elderly that exist at present. We will run through a brief history of different programmes available, but we will also refer to the up-to-date offers given by universities, such as Universities for Senior Citizens (named in Spain as «Third Age Universities»), Universities of Experience, and «Fourth University Cicles» for the older generation.

Ian Watson's article looks at two separate but interrelated subjects – the role of the arts in remedying urban dereliction, now a global phenomenon; and the development of one specific arts gathering in healing the larger wounds of Peruvian society after years of civil warfare and economic chaos. It was from the Peruvian city of Ayacucho, in the late sixteenth century, that the first noteworthy revolt against the Spanish Conquistadors was launched, by the legendary Inca leader Túpac Amaru. It was to this city that Mario Delgado, founder of the Lima-based group Cuatrotablas, invited the Third Theatre gathering, just two years after its inauguration from Eugenio Barba's initiative in 1976. The use of the city as a base for the most prominent of the guerrilla groups made a decennial return of the Third Theatre gathering impossible – and the reasons for holding the 1998 gathering in Ayacucho all the stronger, not least because of the choice of the city by the state-funded agency PromPeru as a focus for national cultural regeneration. Ian Watson, an Advisory Editor and regular contributor to NTQ who teaches at the Rutgers campus of the State University of New Jersey, knits together the threads of the story.
