The root causes of reworks generally continue to be overlooked, despite the fact that reworks regularly cause corporate budgets to be exceeded by more than 12.4 %. Reworks is a recurring problem which companies are gradually losing control of and as a result contributes to time and cost overruns, thereby bringing adverse effects on project performance. To improve corporate performance and control it is, therefore, necessary to identify the root causes of reworks in construction projects. This article explores the root causes of reworks on construction projects with reference to South Africa. The desktop methodological approach was adopted based on scholarly articles to ascertain root causes of reworks. Following a conceptual analysis on corporates, thirty-five causes of reworks were, identified and categorized into five main categories namely client-related, design-related, site management-related, subcontractor-related and transporter-related. Client-related category had the most factors causing reworks. From this category, wrong communication was the factor identified to cause most of the reworks. Finding suggests the need for further empirical study. This finding contributes to the body of knowledge by identifying the root causes of reworks. This can eventually improve corporate control and performance by providing practitioners with an in-depth understanding of reworks.

Abstract Blue whales are often characterized as highly stable, open-ocean swimmers who sacrifice maneuverability for long-distance cruising performance. However, recent studies have revealed that blue whales actually exhibit surprisingly complex underwater behaviors, yet little is known about the performance and control of these maneuvers. Here, we use multi-sensor biologgers equipped with cameras to quantify the locomotor dynamics and the movement of the control surfaces used by foraging blue whales. Our results revealed that simple maneuvers (rolls, turns, and pitch changes) are performed using distinct combinations of control and power provided by the flippers, the flukes, and bending of the body, while complex trajectories are structured by combining sequences of simple maneuvers. Furthermore, blue whales improve their turning performance by using complex banked turns to take advantage of their substantial dorso-ventral flexibility. These results illustrate the important role body flexibility plays in enhancing control and performance of maneuvers, even in the largest of animals. The use of the body to supplement the performance of the hydrodynamically active surfaces may represent a new mechanism in the control of aquatic locomotion.

Today’s multicultural society is characterized by contradictory sexual norms that may have consequences for youths with intellectual disabilities’ possibilities of choosing a partner and expressing their sexuality. However, the body of knowledge concerning the area of youths with intellectual disabilities is limited. This study aims to examine professionals’ views on honor-related experiences among youths with intellectual disabilities. The data consists of nine qualitative interviews with professionals in special schools (personal assistants and teachers). In addition, 11 professionals were included at pre-meetings while designing the study. A thematic analysis was conducted while using sexual script as a theoretical framework. The results are presented in the following themes: (1) The professionals’ perceptions of the young people’s abilities to deal with honor-related experiences; (2) The professionals’ opinions of the existence of honor-related experiences among youth with intellectual disabilities; and (3) Descriptions of the professionals’ conduct toward the youths with intellectual disabilities concerning honor-related experiences. The analysis shows an honor script geared towards youths with intellectual disabilities, which can be described as a continuum between care and control connected to cultural sexual norms and to the disability. The families’ strive for a so-called normality seem to be an important factor in understanding for example arranged marriages among youths with ID. To meet the needs of these youths, the professionals require tools to navigate between care and control in this complicated arena of contradictory sexual and cultural norms.

The chapter established the effects of Nigerian market environment on SMEs performance. An empirical study was conducted with survey research design of 21,444 firms and a sample size of 1,102 was arrived at scientifically. Probability sampling methods were employed. An adapted validated questionnaire, and a 0.82-0.96 reliability coefficients range was used. Inferential statistics were used to analyse the data using SPSS software version 22.0. The findings reveal that Nigerian market environment had significant negative effects on the SME performance. The different components of the Nigerian market environment have different effects on the SME performance. The results imply that the environmental turbulence could be responsible for the high failure rate of SMEs in Nigeria. The study contributes to the body of knowledge on environmental and performance management by noting the criticality of the industry market environment in facilitating organizational performance.

Prequalification (PQ) is a significant process in the selection of private sector for the delivery of civil infrastructure projects.  But, the extant literature, for the most part, focused on PQ of construction projects.  The need for setting proper PQ, i.e., criteria and corresponding limits in public-private partnership (PPP) infrastructure projects, especially municipal solid waste (MSW) projects is still a lacuna in the body of knowledge of Indian PPPs.  To this end, this paper identified PQ criteria using content analysis of the sample of MSW projects. These identified criteria were subjected to regression modeling. These results were compared with the results of well-matured highway sector to draw comparison with MSW projects.  The practical implications are that urban local bodies (ULBs) are but less competent and less uniform in the rationale of setting the PQ criteria and limits.  This paper suggests that lowering the technical and financial PQ limits considering the market orientation will help in bringing more competitive bidders into the bidding.   Since MSW is in a very nascent stage of application of PPP, the study results could lay directions for future project procurement to discern right limits for right project sizes.

Korean oil and gas contractors have recently incurred significant losses due to improper engineering performance on EPC (engineering procurement and construction) projects in overseas markets. Several previous studies have verified the significant impact engineering has on EPC construction cost and project lifecycle. However, no literature has studied the time impact engineering has on EPC projects, representing a gap in the existing body of knowledge. To fill this gap, a Monte Carlo simulation was performed with the Pertmaster, Primavera risk analysis software for three sample onshore oil and gas projects. From said simulation of all major EPC critical activities, the authors found that the engineering phase is up to 10 times as impactful as the procurement and construction phases on the overall schedule duration. In assessing the engineering activities, the authors found the piping design activities to have the greatest impact on the overall schedule performance. Using these findings, the authors present a design schedule management process which minimizes the delays of project completion in EPC projects. Said process includes the following six steps: (1) Milestone management, (2) drawing status management, (3) productivity management of engineering, (4) interface management, (5) management of major vendor documents, and (6) work front management. The findings of this paper add to the body of knowledge by confirming the design phase to be the most impactful on the overall project schedule success. Furthermore, the presented design schedule management will aid industry with successfully executing the design phase in a timely manner, including examples from case study projects for a greater understanding.

This study compares the levels of planning and the outcome of projects procured by direct labour and traditional contract procurement options. For this comparison, a survey of 130 projects was carried out. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and analysed using percentage, mean and t-test. The study discovers that whereas the levels of conception and overall planning done in projects procured by the two options are the same, the levels of design and construction planning done in DBB and DL projects differ. The study also discovers that the time-overruns of projects procured by the two methods differ but their cost-overruns are the same. The study concludes that projects procured by DBB and DL options differ in planning and time-overrun and suggests improved planning at the design stage when DL option is adopted and improved planning at the construction stage when DBB option is adopted. Design-Bid-Build, D-B-B). Palyginimui atlikta 130 projektų apklausa. Duomenys surinkti naudojant tam tikros struktūros anketas ir išanalizuoti pagal procentus, vidurkius ir t testą. Atliekant tyrimą nustatyta, kad abiem paslaugų pirkimo atvejais projektų sumanymo etapas ir bendras planavimas yra vienodo lygio, tačiau tradicinį pirkimų metodą pasirinkusiuose projektuose projektavimo ir statybų planavimo etapų lygis skiriasi nuo tiesioginį darbą pasirinkusių projektų etapų lygio. Atliekant tyrimą paaiškėjo, kad abiem atvejais laikas viršijimas skirtingai, tačiau sąnaudos viršijamos vienodai. Daroma išvada, kad projektams taikant skirtingus pirkimo būdus (tradicinį metodą arba tiesioginio darbo variantą) skiriasi planavimas ir vėlavimas; taip pat siūloma, kaip pagerinti projektavimo etapo planavimą, kai naudojamas tiesioginio darbo variantas, ir kaip pagerinti statybų etapo planavimą, kai taikomas tradicinis metodas.

This paper aims to study the humanitarian risks in construction projects that affect the objectives of the project from time, cost and quality, and to identify, analyze and develop the appropriate strategy, monitor and control and specifically the risk of factors affecting construction projects. A questionnaire was designed to collect data and identify risks in construction projects and then distributed to several public and private sector companies registered with the Organizing Council for engineering works contractors in Sudan, and after the risks facing the construction projects were identified through the questionnaire and telephone interviews with The engineers and managers of these companies, these risks were analyzed by Google Form. The results of the questionnaire showed that inflation, increased prices of materials in the market, weak site management, delayed payments from the contractor and awarding the design to unqualified designers, that is the most important factors affecting the objectives of construction projects in Sudan, and the contractor is the most vulnerable among the parties to the project.

Variation order (VO) is one of the main issues faced by the construction industry in Jordan. Many researchers had investigated on the causes of VO and proposed procedures to minimize and control this issue; however, the VO is affecting the construction industry badly even at moment. Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a powerful management system that can make a significant difference in the project costs. However, BIM has not been examined as a tool to minimize the VO in Jordan. The main target of this study is to utilize BIM applications in reducing the effect of VO on the governmental projects in Jordan. In order to achieve this target, the researcher has designed a questionnaire to gather data related to VO causes and the BIM capability to solve this problem. The data collected from the questionnaires were analyzed statistically. The result from the analysis found that the consultant initiated the highest VO of 50% followed by the clients and the contractors of 20% and 10% unforeseen variation respectively. Moreover, it is found that BIM Design Applications, Facility Operations Simulation, Exploration Design Scenarios, BIM Design Detection and BIM Quantity Take-off and Cost Estimation were significantly capable of minimizing VO. The results show positive relationship with the application of BIM in minimizing VO in the construction industry in Jordan. © 2018. JASET, International Scholars and Researchers Association

Material inventory management is one part of the logistics system devoted to project implementation on material procurement as per the needs plan procurement management is a very important material function, since the material inventory for a construction project involves a considerable investment cost. In general, every construction project involves complex activities, which involves the sharing of activities and operations. Material acquisition activities require good planning and control considering the large percentage of material costs to the total cost of the project. So if less effective material handling will result in loss of time, cost and quality. then this should receive high attention from contractors for the smooth and performance to be achieved in the implementation of construction projects.

Since the early 2000s, an ever growing online community of bloggers and amateur statisticians has been developing a new set of advanced analytics and performance metrics for the National Hockey League. Many of the people who are driving innovation in this field are not data scientists but, rather, intellectually curious fans of the game, who are playing a significant role in reshaping the way the game is consumed and understood. Yet, despite the body of knowledge created online, only within the last few years have the National Hockey League and the mainstream sport media begun to take notice of these innovations. I argue that the analytics movement is being driven from the fans up, rather than from the National Hockey League and other professional leagues down, and that the drivers of this movement are examples of what Antonio Gramsci calls ‘organic intellectuals’ – the analytics camp is locked into its own ‘war of position’ against the hegemony of traditional hockey fans, coaches, management and sport media. My research explores the resistance Internet-based content creators have experienced from established hockey media personalities (‘Hockey Men’) and the National Hockey League itself, connecting this resistance to a growing trend away from evidence-based discourse in the current Western media landscape.
