Due to the rapid progress in computer hardware and software, CFD became a powerful and effective tool for implementation turbulence modeling in defined combustion mathematical models in the complex boiler geometries. In this paper the commercial CFD package, ANSYS FLUENT was used to model fluid flow through the boiler, in order to define velocity field and predict pressure drop. Mathematical modeling was carried out with application of Standard, RNG, and Realizable k-? turbulence model using the constants presented in literature. Three boilers geometry were examined with application of three different turbulence models with variants, which means consideration of 7 turbulence model arrangements in FLUENT. The obtained model results are presented and compared with data collected from experimental tests. All experimental tests were performed according to procedures defined in the standard SRPS EN 303-5 and obtained results are presented in this paper for all three examined geometries. This approach was used for improving construction of boiler fired by solid fuel with heat output up to 35 kW and for selection of the most convenient construction.

Tidal turbine array optimization is crucial for the further development of the marine sector. It has already been observed that tidal turbines within an array can be heavily affected by excessive aerodynamic interference, thus leading to performance deterioration. Small-scale experimental tests aimed at understanding the physical mechanisms of interaction and identifying optimal distances between machines can be found in the literature. However, often, the relatively narrow channels of laboratories imply high blockage ratios, which could affect the results, making them unreliable if extrapolated to full-scale cases. The main aim of this numerical study was to analyze the effects of the blockage caused by the laboratory channel walls in cases of current and also current surface waves. For this purpose, the performance predictions achieved for two turbines arranged in line for different lateral offsets in case of a typical laboratory scale were compared to the predictions obtained for a full scale, unconfined environment. The methodology consisted in the adoption a hybrid Blade Element Momentum–Computational Fluid Dynamics (BEM-CFD) approach, which was based on the Virtual Blade Model of ANSYS-Fluent. The results indicate that (1) the performance of a downstream turbine can increase up to 5% when this has a lateral separation of 1.5D from an upstream device in a full-scale environment compared to a misleading 15% calculated for the laboratory set-up, and (2) the relative fluctuations of power and thrust generated by waves are not significantly affected by the domain dimensions.

Inverse-Turbulent Prandtl number (α) is an important parameter in RNG k-ε turbulence models since it affects the ratio of molecular viscosity and turbulent viscosity. In curved pipe, this highly affects the model prediction to a large range eddy-scale flow. According to Yakhot & Orzag, the α range from 1-1.3929 has not been investigated in detail in curved pipe flow (Yakhot & Orszag, 1986) and specific Re. This paper varied inverse-turbulent Prandtl number α to 1-1.3 in RNG k-ε turbulence model on cylindrical curved pipe in order to obtain the optimum value of α to predict unfully-developed flow in the curve with curve ratio R/D of 1.607. Analysis was conducted numericaly with inlet specified Re of 40900 which was generated from the experiment at α 1, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3. Wall surface roughness is not considered in this paper. With assumption that thermal diffusivity is always dominant to turbulent viscosity, higher Inverse-turbulent Prandtl number represent domination of turbulent viscosity to molecular viscosity of the flow and predict to have more interaction between large scale eddy to small scale eddy as well. The results show the use of α = 1.3 has increased the turbulent kinetic energy by 7% and the turbulent dissipation by 5% compared to general inverse-turbulent Prandtl number of 1. The value difference shows that the use of higher α on RNG turbulence model described more interaction between eddies in secondary and swirling flow at pipe curve at Re = 40900.

The present work reviews a comparison between calculations of a steady and unsteady three dimensional (3D) flow past the diffuser channels of a centrifugal pump. The commercial software ANSYS Fluent has been used. The considered domain is one of the three stages, since each has exactly the same design. In the first part, simulations are carried out at the best efficiency point (BEP) both steady and transient state, single phase flow and four different turbulence models. Results are compared with the performance report from the manufacturer. In the second part, only the realizable k-ε turbulence model has been taken into account. The simulations have been repeated for different mass flows and the results were again compared with the data from the manufacturer. The comparison performed in the first part shows that integral quantities results are not sensibly influenced by the turbulence model. The comparison at different mass flow shows that the steady state simulations demonstrated to be a good approximation of the transient state, always containing the error within an acceptable limit. The minor computational effort needed makes it attractive to be used for further investigations which will involve two-phase flow studies on the same pump.

This work presents a comparative study of Unsteady Reynolds–Averaged Navier–Stokes (URANS), Detached Eddy Simulations (DES) and Delayed Detached Eddy Simulations (DDES) turbulence modeling approaches by performing numerical investigation with the ANSYS-FLUENT software package on a full-scale model of the Jetstream 31 aircraft. The lift and drag coefficients obtained from different models are compared with flight test data, wind tunnel data and theoretical estimates. The different turbulence models are also compared with each other on the basis of pressure coefficient distributions and velocity fluctuations along various lines and sections of the aircraft. For the mesh and the conditions presented in this study, the DDES Spalart–Allmaras model gives the best overall results.

The selection of a turbulence model for a problem is not trivial and has to be done systematically after comparison of various models with experimental data. It is a well known fact that there is no such turbulence model which fits all problems ([3], [13]). The flow in S-duct diffuser is a very complex one where both separation and secondary flow coexist. Previous work by the author on CFD analysis of S-duct diffuser was done using k-ε-Standard model [1], however it has been seen that choosing other turbulence model may result in better capturing of the physics in such a problem. Also flow control, to reduce energy losses, is achieved using a technique called Zero Net Mass Flow (ZNMF), in which suction and vortex generation jets (VGJ) are combined and positioned at optimum location. A proper turbulence model has to be chosen for capturing these phenomena effectively. Extensive experimental data is available on this problem and ZNMF technique from previous work done by one of the authors which is used for validating the CFD results. Here the focus is on choosing the best turbulence model for the S-duct diffuser. Numerical (CFD) analysis is carried out using Ansys Fluent 13.0 with six turbulence models for the geometry with (ZNMF) and without (Bare duct) flow control and then compared with the experimental results. The turbulence models used are Spalart-Allmaras, three variants of k-ε – Standard, RNG and Realizable and two variants of k-ω – Standard and SST model. All the parameters of comparison are non-dimensionalized using the free stream properties, so that the results are applicable to a wider range of problems. This work is limited to incompressible flow analysis, as the experimental data is only available for low Mach number flows. Comparison of all these models clearly shows that results obtained using k-ω-SST model are very comparable to the experimental results for the bare duct (without flow control) and flow controlled duct both in terms of distribution of properties and aggregate results. Compressible flow analysis can be attempted to achieve reliable results in future with ZNMF using the best turbulence model based on this study.

The pressure coefficients on duo-pitched roofs of separated buildings are well described by several standards. Nowadays, there are various commercial or non-commercial programs which can predict the pressure coefficients. However, the most accurate method is to perform a wind tunnel test. The aim of this paper is to simulate the airflow over a gable roof with different elevations under ANSYS Fluent 14.0 program. Examined elevations of the gable roof are 5°, 15° and 30°. Classical two equation k-ε turbulence models based on Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations simulation were performed. Performance of each turbulence model with the increasing angel of the roof was compared.

Although the problem of 2D ribbed channels has been studied heavily in the literature as a benchmark or basic case for cooling of electronic packing, there is still a contradiction in the literature about the suitable turbulence model that should be used in such a problem. The accuracy of the computational predictions of heat transfer rates depends mostly on the choice of the proper turbulence model that is capable of capturing the physics of the problem, and on the corresponding wall treatment. The main objective of this work is to identify the proper turbulence model to be used in thermal analysis of electronic systems. A number of available turbulence models, namely, the standard k-ε, the renormalization group k-ε, the shear stress transport (SST), the k-ω, and the Reynolds stress models, have been investigated. The selection of the most appropriate turbulence model has been based upon comparisons with both direct numerical simulations (DNSs) and experimental results of other works. Based on such comparisons, the SST turbulence model has been found to produce results in very good agreement with the DNS and experimental results and hence it is recommended as an appropriate turbulence model for thermal analysis of electronic packaging.

Abstract The two-equation turbulence models used for the present study are the commonly used standard k-ॉ model and k-ω model. In order to achieve this target, numerical simulation was initiated in Ansys Fluent to simulate a flow over a flat test surface with a diameter of 4mm straight, circular film cooling hole at angled injections of 25°, 30°, 35°and 40°. The comparison between the numerical calculations and the theoretical results showed the standard k-ω turbulence model gave better predictions against those with the standard k-ω turbulence models. The ability of k-ω model in closely predicting the cooling behavior is due to the precise modeling of the lateral spreading of the film. The isotropic two-equation turbulence models exhibited a huge dissent. The results also indicated that increasing the mass flow rates in the mainstream channels reduces the temperature distribution along the stream-wise direction.

Mixing is one of the critical processes in the industry. The stirred tank is one of the operating units commonly used in the mixing process. Several factors greatly influence the efficiency of the stirred tank, including the stirred-tank design, operating conditions, and working fluid properties. The side-entry stirred tank is widely applied in industry, among others; the processing of crude oil in the refinery industry, water-molasses mixing in the bioethanol industry, pulp stock chest in the pulp and paper industry, and anaerobic digester for biogas reactors. Mixing time is one of the critical parameters used in the design of the stirred tank. This research will model mixing time in a flat bottomed-cylindrical side-entry stirred tank with dimensions D = 40 cm and T = 40 cm using CFD ANSYS 18.2 by applying the Standard κ − ε (SKE) and Realizable κ − ε (RKE) turbulence models. The stirrer used is a three-blade marine propeller d = 4 cm which is an axial type impeller. The phenomenon of mixing in the side-entry stirred tank, qualitatively described through computational prediction results in the form of flow profiles and tracer density change contours locally. Moreover, quantitatively indicated by mixing time validated using experimental data carried out by the conductometry method. The computational prediction shows that the mixing time modeled using the SKE turbulence model shows a similarity level of 68.16%, while the RKE turbulence model shows 31.94%.

Abstract A Computer-Fluid-Dynamic (CFD) simulation of air-flow around quarter-circular object using commercial software ANSYS Fluent was used to study iteration of building to air-flow. Several, well know transient turbulence models were used and results were compared to experimental measurement of this object in Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel (BLWT) of Slovak University of Technology (SUT) in Bratislava. Main focus of this article is to compare pressure values from CFD in three different elevations, which were obtained from experimental measurement. Polyhedral mesh type was used in the simulation. Best results on the windward face elevations were obtained using LES turbulence model, where the averaged difference was around 7.71 %. On the leeward face elevations it was SAS turbulence model and averaged differences from was 15.91 %. On the circular face it was SAS turbulence model and averaged differences from all elevations was 12.93 %.
