This research involved a study exploring the changes in an academic institution expressed through decision-making in a shifting leadership culture. Prior to the study, the school was heavily entrenched in authoritarian and centralized decision-making, but as upper-level administrators were exposed to the concept of collaborative action research, they began making decisions through a reflection and action process. Changing assumptions and attitudes were observed and recorded through interviews at the end of the research period. The research team engaged in sixteen weekly cycles of reflection and action based on an agenda they mutually agreed to and through an analysis of post-research interviews, weekly planning meetings, discussions, and reflection and action cycles. Findings revealed experiences centering around the issues of:  The nature of collaboration- it created discomfort, it created a sense of teamwork, it created difficulty.  The change of environment in the process- team members began to respect each other more, and the process became more enjoyable.  The freedom and change in the process- freedom to voice opinions and to actively listen, the use of experience to lead elsewhere in the school.  How issues of power are better understood by working together- the former process was less collaborative, politics will always be part of the process. As a result of this study, members have started using this decision-making methodology in other areas of administration.

This reflexive essay examines the adoption of an intentional ‘ethic of care’ by social work administrators in a large social work school located in the Pacific Northwest. An ethic of care foregrounds networks of human interdependence that collapse the public/private divide. Moreover, rooted in the political theory of recognition, a care ethic responds to crisis by attending to individuals’ uniqueness and ‘whole particularity.’ Foremost, it rejects indifference. Through the personal recollections of one academic administrator, the impact of rejecting indifference in spring term 2020 is described. The essay concludes by linking the rejection of indifference to the national political landscape.

To the Editor.— I have just finished reading Dr Brent's article on chairmanships in the July issue of Pediatrics (1992;90:50-57). As someone who aspires to this role in the future, I found his advice invaluable. The reading list at the end was large and I wondered if he could prioritize it for me. Where should I start? I would like to read some of the suggested books on academic administration that are listed. Please guide me to some of the best (and most available) of the ones that are listed.

A web portal can be defined as a personalized, single point of access to information, resources and services covering a wide range of topic. Based on some researches, a system based on the internet can improve the work efficiency to some extent and provide all kinds of academic administration information timely. As to establish the intended function, usability is a crucial factor to be embarked on. This will ensure that the users are attracted to use the portal by increasing the relationship between the users and the portal’s interface. The Applied Informatics Research Group (AIRG) is the group assigned by the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology (FSKTM) to manage the Research Group Portal System (RGPS) that is the sample used in this research. The RGPS is a web-based system that allows collaboration among the users; to locate, store, use and share their knowledge. The main objective of this research is to obtain the feedbackfrom the users regarding the usability of the RGPS that is deterring them from optimizing the usage of this system. Surveys and questionnaires are used to evaluate and the output acts an input to modify the interface of the RGPS. Again, validation will be done to weight the users’ experience with the modified user interface.

IT security management is essential for organizations to notice the occurring risks and opportunities because they will profoundly affect the ongoing business processes within the organization. The Satya Wacana Academic Information System, more often called SIASAT, is an IT component playing an essential role in running core business processes at Satya Wacana Christian University under the control of the Information Systems and Technology Bureau. At this time, the implementation of SIASAT has been going well, but there are still some obstacles. Lack of human resources is one of the findings and one it becomes of the most significant risks as it affects the use of infrastructure and information security. This research was conducted using the international standard ISO/IEC 27001:2013, prioritizing information security by taking a planning clause focusing on risk assessment. From the results of this study, there were nine recommendations given. Some of which were the most important, i.e., creating separated standard operating procedure documents for SIASAT, which previously were still affiliated with the Academic Administration Bureau; distributing job descriptions; and providing clear and documented access rights for everyone. It is expected that this research can reduce the occurring risks and can be considered for establishing improvements to enhance academic services in the future.
