It is an immense honor to have been selected to hold the prestigious 41st Nikolsky Lecture and to have the opportunity to synthesize my experiences with regards to the most important principle that permeates aeronautical engineering—“the concept of safety.” Having worked in the rotary-wing field for 39 years, with growing levels of involvement and responsibilities, I have been involved in the design, development, and certification of many helicopter models at the Leonardo Helicopters Division (LHD; formerly Agusta and then AgustaWestland), such as A109, A119, EH101, A129, NH90, AW609. More recently, I had the full responsibility of design, development, certification, and entry into service of three new helicopter types within the “AW Family concept”, specifically the AW139, AW189, and AW169. I am profoundly grateful for the mentors encountered in my professional life—Bruno Lovera and Santino Pancotti, both of whom were also honored with the Nikolsky Lectureship. In working with them, not a single day passed where the word “safety” was not mentioned. They taught me that “safety” shall be the mantra of every aeronautical engineer because it is our principal duty and responsibility, towards those who travel in, work on, and work with our products and entrust their lives to our work and professionalism daily. I have tried hard never to forget this lesson, and to convey this to the young engineers that I have had the chance and pleasure to work with. If I have been able to pass on this lesson successfully, through my work with others through this lectureship, it would be the greatest achievement of my life. In this vein, this paper is organized in three parts: (i) definitions and principles, along with some “philosophical” concepts; (ii) the application of these principles at Leonardo in the design of the latest generation of helicopters, and finally (iii) a discussion of emerging “safety technologies” that promise to improve the safety of future helicopters and operations.

The domestic and care sector continues to display some problematic aspects due to its complexity, especially in terms of regulation. Italy represents a unique and peculiar case, where domestic and care work remains firmly under the purview of family management, and the work itself is entrusted mainly to immigrant workers. This paper aims to investigate, through in-depth interviews with representatives of both unions and employers’ associations, how the key actors involved in regulating domestic and care work intervene, understanding what kind of measures they take and what systems of relations/exchange exist among the different players involved in this process. The research sought to map strategies at a more macro level. While some of the actions undertaken by the social partners seem promising, there is still a lack of full responsibility for care at the public level, with marked asymmetries with respect to both services provided and working conditions.

In Slovakia, dual vocational education and training is based on the cooperation between secondary vocational schools and companies. Companies take full responsibility for the quality of education and training in occupational safety and knowledge of operating activities risks. In our article, we aimed to survey pupils with an attitude questionnaire about the quality and experience with safety and education at the employer`s workplace during vocational education and training. Ninety respondents, preparing for their professions in the automotive industry, participated in our survey. The analysis of the questionnaires revealed that the students could not relevantly identify the most significant dangers and risks in the workplaces to which they are exposed in the current work. An essential recommended measure is a high-quality inclusion of these topics into training using activating methods in this process and better methodological and vocational preparation for employers` lecturers.

Abstract This exploratory study focuses on the use of hearsay evidential marking in the course of storytelling in a Tibetic language, Lhagang Tibetan, combining a descriptive linguistic approach with a literary-theoretic analysis. Tibetic languages generally possess a morpho-syntactically encoded evidential-epistemic system, in which the hearsay evidential represents a non-first-hand information source. However, we find a random use of the hearsay evidential marker in the oral literature of Lhagang Tibetan, although it has been transmitted from one generation to another by storytellers. The article aims to provide a reasonable explanation for the use of the hearsay evidential in storytelling. It proposes that hearsay evidential marking reflects the speaker’s attitude towards the utterance to either avoid full responsibility for the utterance or enhance the utterance’s authenticity. The former objective principally appears in telling a story based on a weak memory of the story; the latter appears in telling a legend. This explanation is supported by oral literature theory, especially the arguments regarding the difference between folktales and legends.

An important aspect of the emerging user care discourse is the apologies offered by companies. Previous research has focused on public apologies; however, there has been little focus on the users’ comments in response to apologies. This case study aimed to investigate (i) the structure of the public apologies in terms of their frequency and sequence, and (ii) the users’ responses to these apologies as indicated in their comments. Four public apologies were purposively selected: They were all presented in English by the executives and posted on Facebook between 2011 and 2015. The responses to these apologies were also collected. The results of content analysis indicate that apology strategies, including taking full responsibility, asking for forgiveness, being sincere, and being published in a timely manner are the most effective strategies to elicit positive responses. The results have useful implications for research and practice in the area.

This article discusses about the relevance of KH Imam Zarkasi thoughts of education in developing intrapersonal intelligence. It is a kind of library research using descriptive-qualitative method. The resutt of this research shows that KH. Imam Zarkasi`s thoughts are still very relevant to be implemented in developing students` intrapersonal intelligence. Among of his thoughts are; 1) developing intrapersonal intelligence can be through two ways; intentionally, that is through education in formal institutions, and unintentionally that is through interaction with the surrounding community and the nature. 2) The method of learning to develop intrapersonal intelligence is through individual training; by entrusting children to carry out their own duties with full responsibility, giving children the opportunity to make their own decisions and be responsible for their decisions, and other similar activities. These thoughts have been applied by KH Imam Zarkasi through the institution he developed, namely Pondok Pesantren Gontor. Among of his renewal efforts are; The implementation learning using classical system, the use of learning methods that provide opportunities for children to develop their thinking power critically, independently and responsibly, and provide extracurricular activities as a forum for students to develop themselves. The philosophic notion of human vulnerability cannot be pinpointed as such in the corpus of classic philosophy. Nevertheless, death and suffering as essential philosophical and theological problems make reference to the dimension of vulnerability inherent to the human condition. Since times immemorial, the fear of death, the avoidance of suffering, or the crisis situations of human existence have laid at the basis of philosophical and religious systems. According to Freud, in the futile pursuit of happiness humans often face misery, which stems from a suffering that threatens them from three different directions: their own body, the outside world, and the relationships with other people. Starting from this angle, the present article furthers the notion of vulnerability by identifying its archetypal themes in relation to human life and its conditions of existence. Two main concepts will guide this study of human vulnerability: a vulnerability inherent to human subjectivity, and one consubstantial to the process of human socialisation. For Levinas, vulnerability has become alike an obsession for others, a full responsibility, which leads to the following formula: it is only a vulnerable person who can love one’s neighbour. In accordance with Habermas, the manner in which a human being leaves natural law and accesses social justice is here re-examined, as it stands for a vulnerability structurally determined by the forms of socio-cultural life.
