The Effects of Process Accountability on Individuals’ Use of a Familiar Technology

ABSTRACT: Individuals’ technology use decisions are critical to the success of information technology in an organizational context. We investigate the influence of process accountability on individual professionals’ intended and actual use of a familiar technology in decision-making tasks directly related to their work role by anchoring in the core constructs of the technology acceptance model (TAM). Our focus differs from traditional initial user acceptance research in that participants have considerable knowledge about and experience with the focal technology. According to results from an experiment involving 130 participants, process accountability has a significant, positive effect on perceived technology usefulness, intention to use, and actual technology use. Further analyses show that perceived technology usefulness mediates the accountability-intention relationship and intention to use mediates the accountability-actual use relationship. By incorporating process accountability into the TAM and empirically testing its effects, we shed light on the causal link between process accountability and people’s perceptions of a familiar technology’s usefulness, as well as their intentions and actual use of the technology. Our findings show that process accountability, a source of extrinsic motivation commonly found in business work contexts, has important effects on people’s decisions to use a familiar technology in work-related decision-making tasks. We extend user technology acceptance research by connecting motivation theories, cognitive information processing, and user technology acceptance, particularly in scenarios that involve voluntary use of familiar technology, and the requirement to justify the procedure used for deriving a decision or completing a problem-solving task. Our findings have several important implications for technology acceptance decisions and management practice.

The e-commerce industry has the potential to be one of the drivers of the domestic economy. One of the impacts of the advancement of e-commerce is the emergence of many online-based marketplaces or so-called e-marketplaces. However, a lot of these online marketplaces sell 90% imported products. In addition, the outbreak of Covid-19 in Indonesia has prompted the government to establish several policies that have significantly reduced MSME performance by up to 70-100%. This study aimed to provide an empirical analysis of the influence of factors based on the Technology of Acceptance Model (TAM) approach, namely e-marketplace self-efficacy, complexity, perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, attitude towards using, behavioral intention to use, and actual technology use in e-marketplaces. The sample consisted of MSMEs in East Java, especially those engaged in the food and beverage industry sector with ready-to-eat processed food products whose business activities use the Shopee e-marketplace application platform. This is an online shopping marketplace focused on mobile platforms. There were 150 respondents. The Structural Equation Model (SEM) was used. E-marketplace self-efficacy, complexity, perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, attitude towards using, behavioral intention to use, and actual technology use in e-marketplaces all had positive effects on each other. This showed that a system that offers convenience will improve behavior, habits, and performance for MSMEs in using e-marketplace activities. This study examines a sample (N=239) of pre-service teachers’ self-reported intention to use technology. The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) was used as a research framework in which findings contribute to technology acceptance research by demonstrating the suitability of the TAM to explain the intention to use technology among educational users. Using the structural equation modelling for data analysis, a good fit was found for both the measurement and structural models. Overall, the results of this study offer evidence that the TAM is effective in predicting pre-service teachers’ intention to use technology. This paper concludes with a discussion of the limitations and recommendations for further study.

This research article explores the important elements of trust and transparency to the adoption of e-government services. The Technology Acceptance Model was used as the theoretical framework. The data capture and analyses were conducted with SPSS. The results indicate that trust in the internet was a significant predictor of both the intention to use and perceived ease of use (PEOU), but was not significant in predicting perceived usefulness (PU) and the actual use (AU) of e-government services. Trust in the government (TG) was also not significant in determining both the intention to use and PEOU of e-government services. Rather TG had a significant impact on PU and the actual use (AU) of e-government services. Furthermore, perceived transparency was a significant predictor of PU, IU, and AU of e-government services. The implications of these findings on the implementation of e-government are thoroughly discussed.

BACKGROUND Cardiovascular disease, including atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), is a growing public health threat globally and many individuals remain undiagnosed, untreated, and uncontrolled. Simultaneously, mobile health (mHealth) interventions using short messaging service (SMS) have gained popularity globally. There is an opportunity for innovative approaches such as mHealth to encourage and enable adherence to medications for ASCVD and its risk factors. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to understand mobile technology acceptance, use, and facilitating conditions among the study population ahead of the design of an mHealth intervention. METHODS Using data from a mixed-methods study conducted in Singapore, we conducted a cross-sectional survey with 100 participants and in-depth, semistructured interviews with 20 patients. All participants were over the age of 40 years with ASCVD or its risk factors. Interviews were conducted in English and Mandarin and if needed translated to English. Nvivo 11 (QSR International) was used for analyses. RESULTS Participants reported their perspectives on technology use and preferences, including low or sporadic mobile phone use and usability concerns including small screen and text size, among others; the benefit of previous mHealth use in creating a favorable opinion of SMS for health information; trust in both the source of mHealth SMS, as well as in treatment; the formation of habits; and fear of sequelae or death for facilitating intention to use an mHealth intervention and adhere to medication. We also highlighted a case that underscored the importance of the period after diagnosis in habit forming as an opportunity for an mHealth intervention. CONCLUSIONS We explored both technology- and adherence-related factors that influence a patient’s intention to use an mHealth intervention for adherence to ASCVD medication in Singapore. We highlighted the importance of identifying the right opportunity to engage with patients and promote an mHealth intervention for adherence, such as immediately following diagnosis when patients are establishing medication-taking habits.

Abstract This study examined how the status of frailty moderated the association between the self-efficacy about gerontechnology use and the intention to use gerontechnology (IUG) among Korean older adults. In this study, gerontechnology devices referred to exoskeleton robots for exercise. The data was collected through an online survey in February 2021, and 324 Korean older adults aged 65 and above were included in the analysis (Women: 50.9%, Men: 49.1%). The dependent variable was the intention to use gerontechnology from the Almere model (Heerink, 2010) and the independent variable was self-efficacy about gerontechnology use from the Senior Technology Acceptance Model(Chen & Chan, 2014). Both were measured as continuous variables. The moderating variable was the status of frailty (Non-frail=0, Frail=1). Age, gender, education level, and log-transformed household income were controlled for. Multiple linear regression to examine moderation effect was conducted using PROCESS Macro model 1. The findings showed that frailty status moderates the association between self-efficacy and IUG among Korean older adults. Concretely, the higher self-efficacy about gerontechnology use, the lower IUG for non-frail Korean older adults. However, the main effect of self-efficacy was non-significant for the frail sample. Even though self-efficacy has been known to affect the variables related to technology use or acceptance positively, the results suggest that there may exist differences in research results depending on participants' health status. The type of gerontechnology devices may also have affected the results. Further exploration is needed to the interaction effects of potential influencing factors on the gerontechnology acceptance model.

The purpose of this study is to measure factors that influence students’acceptance of a Learning Management System (LMS) using the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). LMS is an information system that facilitates e-learning that serves to process, store, disseminate learning materials and provides administrative support and communication related to the teaching and learning process. Support students as users of the LMS content are one of the success factors in the implementation of the LMS. This study uses the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), which has five factors namely perceived usefullness, perceived ease of use, attitudes towards to use, behavioral intention to use and actual use. A set of questionnaires have been completed by 60 students in Politeknik SAKTI Surabaya. Data were processed using SmartPLS and analyzed using the Structural Equation Modeling–Partial Least Square (SEM-PLS) method. The results showed that the TAM was valid, reliable, and substantially acceptable based on the results of data evaluation, ie the indicator factor loading > 0.5, the t-statistic ≥ 1.96, the cronbach alpha ≥ 0.6, and the value of the goodness of fit  = 0.47. The factors that influence students’acceptance of a LMS in Politeknik SAKTI Surabaya are perceived usefullness, perceived ease of use, and attitudes towards to use, affecting the intention to use, and significantly affect the actual use of LMS.

Technology has made life easier in today’s world. In addition, developments in technologies and communication have become commonplace for majority of people. Global telecommunication development has reduced distances around the globe, and made it easy for businesses to proliferate worldwide. This study explored the factors affecting the use of telecommunication services among customers through mobile phones. The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) has been extensively used in the field of technology use but is lacking when it comes to factors that affect customers’ intention to use service as they focus more on technology. On the basis of review findings, there is a positive relationship between service quality, subjective norms, perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use of service and voluntariness moderates the relationship between subjective norms and intention to use service. These and other relationships are considered in the development of a Service Acceptance Model.

AbstractBlended Learning (BL) has been implemented by lecturers in higher educations for promoting effective pedagogical practices. However, intention to use and actual usage of BL by lecturers in higher education seems to be a major setback for successful BL implementation. Therefore, this study developed a model to examine the factors that influences lecturers’ behavioral intention and actual use of BL based on the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology and Technological, Pedagogical and Content Knowledge model. Accordingly, survey questionnaire was employed to collect data from 544 academic staffs across universities, colleges, and polytechnics. Results indicate that performance expectancy, effort expectancy, and social influence significantly impact lecturers’ behavioral intention to use BL for teaching. Additionally, results confirm that facilitating condition positively influence actual BL usage. Likewise, technological, pedagogical, and content knowledge initiatives employed by lecturers in teaching positively influences actual BL usage. Results from multi-group analysis indicate that gender, age, experience, and voluntariness of use do not predict the behaviour of lecturers to use BL. Also, this study provides insights as to how higher education can enhance lecturers’ usage of BL to improve teaching effectiveness. This study provides a better understanding of lecturers’ views of knowledge in relation to course content, pedagogy, and technology use in improving teaching. The developed model can significantly be used by academic staffs to monitor and improve their current BL activities in measuring their knowledge about teaching regarding teaching improvement. Practically, lecturers can adopt the developed model to improve teaching pedagogies and course content.

The objective of this research is to evaluate P-Care BPJS information system based on Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). The type of research is analytical, cross sectional approach. Number of respondents 206 P-Care BPJS users at primary health care. Data analysis using linear regression. Based on correlation test external variables with percieved usefulness, showed high correlation = 0.6 (p <0.001); external variables with percieved ease of use showed moderate correlation = 0.4 (p <0.001); perceived ease of use with attitude showed moderate correlation = 0.5 (p <0.001); percieved usefulness with attitude showed high correlation = 0.7 (p <0.001); perceived usefulness with actual use showed moderate correlation = 0.5 (p <0.001); behavioral intention to use with percieved usefulness showed moderate correlation = 0.5 (p <0.001); attitude with behavioral intention to use showed high correlation = 0.6 (p <0.001); behavioral intention to use with actual use showed high correlation = 0.7 (p <0.001).
