This research aimed to analyze the models that applied by the English teacher on J-2 SCHOOl. The subject was the English teachers and the students of J-2 in academic year of 2016/2017. This research was designed as descriptive research design. The researcher instruments are observation and interviewThe result of this study is the used of bottom-up and top models in teaching reading comprehension based on Grabe theory. The frequency of directive in first and second meeting the teacher taught with bottom-up model. The teacher used bottom-up model to teach the students with word meaning and the small particle part in reading comprehension. The third until five meeting was top-down model. The teacher would teach the students with a specific aspect, like teach the students about the specific of descriptive text. It could make students more critical about the text. The underlying reasons of English teacher apply models in teaching reading comprehension are to make the process of teaching English can run appropriately with the students level and the students can join the learning process efficiently. Bottom-up and top down model could make the students active and comfortable in the classroom.

Reading is an activity to get information from the written text. However, the students still have didifficulty when they read. So,  to solve the students'dstudents' problems, the researchers used Phrase - Cued text (PCT) strategy in teaching reading. The purpose of this research was to know the significant effect of teaching reading by using PCT at the eight grade students of SMPN 2 Harau in 2016/217 academic year. This research was an experimental research. The population of this research was the eight grade students of SMP N 2 Harau in 2016/2017 academic year. There were seven classes of eight grade. The sample of this research chosen by using cluster sampling. The experimental class was VIII.6 had been taught by using PCT and the control class was VIII. 7 had  been taught by using conventional strategy.  The instrument of this research was reading test in multiple choice form.  It was valid because the students have learnt the material and had been stated in syllabus and based on curriculum. Then,  the instrument was reliable because the coefficient of reliability of split half was 0.78. The researchers analyzed the data by using t-test suggested by Gay et Al. The result of the data analysis was t-calculated (3.97) t-table (2.042) where the level of significant was 0.05 with degree freedom was 38. H0 was rejected and H1 was accepted.  So,  it can be concluded that there was significant effect of teaching reading by using PCT strategy at the eight grade students of SMP N 2 Harau.So, it is suggested for English teacher to use this PCT strategy in reading lesson.

This study aims at describing how the teachers teach reading comprehension of narrative text to the tenth grade students in Sibolangit and revealing the underlying reasons of why do they do that way. This study was conducted by using qualitative research design. The subject of this study were two english teachers who taught at tenth grade students of two SMA in Sibolangit they are : SMA Negeri  1 Sibolangit  and SMA RK Deli Murni Bandar Baru in academic year 2016/ 2017. The data were analyzed by using Miles and Huberman data analysis technique. The  technique of collecting the data was recorded from the classroom process in teaching reading comprehension of narrative text. The findings of the study show that most of teachers’ ways are not yet focusing on teaching reading comprehension but rather focusing teaching the knowledge of genre. The underlying reason of the teachers’ ways in teaching reading comprehension did not facilitate reading comprehension. It was due to the misperception of the concept of teaching reading comprehension.  Keywords : Teaching,Reading Comprehension,Narrative Text.

Teaching reading in ESP Class is a challenging work not only for the English teacher but also for the students of Islamic Education Program or PAI of University of Muhammadiyah Jember. Teacher should be selective and creative in implementing teaching strategy in order to encourage students to comprehend reading text and communicate their understanding in the target language. The implementation of Read-Examine-Decide-Write (REDW) Strategy was done in ESP class of PAI. Read-Examine-Decide-Write Strategy was found as a good solution to teach them reading comprehension. By grouping the students in pair, they did their learning effectively through the steps of REDW. 75.8% or 22 of 29 students got score ≥ 75. They were active in comprehending the text through steps of REDW. The research result showed that Read-Examine-Decide-Write Strategy was able to improve PAI students’ reading comprehension in the first semester of 2015-2016 Academic Year.Keywords: reading comprehension, read-examine-decide-write strategy

Reading comprehension is one of the skills that students must have to enrich their knowledge, especially university students. There are two kinds of reading strategies: Top – Down strategy and Bottom – Up Strategy. The aim of this research is to find information about students’ reading comprehension strategies that were applied by the students when they were given reading comprehension text. The research design was qualitative approach. The informants consisted of ten English educational department students, one reading subject lecturer and the head of English educational department. Interview and observation were the major sources of the data to find out the students’ strategies on reading comprehension. Based on those data, it was found that most of the students applied bottom – up strategies in reading comprehension texts

This research aimed to find out the strategies used by students in completing TOEFL reading comprehension test, types of reading comprehension in TOEFL test that was difficult to be answered by students, the greatest challenges factor for students in completing reading comprehension in TOEFL test, and the score of the 2nd semester students of STTIKOM Insan Unggul Cilegon-Banten. This is a descriptive qualitative study based on observation, interview, questionnaire and test as the instruments of collecting data.The sample is 20 advanced STTIKOM undergraduate students at Cilegon-Banten in Academic year 2018/2019 who were asked to do a PBT TOEFL reading comprehension test.The result showed that inference (33%), vocabulary (40%) and unstated details (50%) questions are the most difficult types to be answered by students. Related to the strategy, three of the strategies (skimming and scanning, top down and guess meaning ) are used by students in answering reading comprehension in TOEFL test. The greatest challenges for students in answering TOEFL reading comprehension in TOEFL test are less motivation in reading a text, less practice and they did not mastering vocabulary well. In addition, the TOEFL score of STTIKOM Insan Unggul Cilegon-Banten was insufficient to achieve standardize test or low.

This study aims to analyze the application of skimming techniques to the optimal reading comprehension on students of STKIP MB. This research uses a quantitative approach with quasi-experimental and descriptive research. This research was conducted on students of STKIP MB Academic Year 2018/2019. The conclusions of this study include: (1) the level of reading comprehension after applying skimming techniques is better than the reading comprehension level before applying skimming techniques performed on the same research subject, (3) the level of reading comprehension by applying skimming techniques is better than the reading comprehension level by applying conventional reading conducted on different research subjects. So, reading with skimming techniques has a significant effect on optimizing students' reading comprehension.

The objectives of this study were to describe the teachers’ ways of teaching reading of descriptive texts to tenth grade students in Deli Serdang, Indonesia and to reveal the underlying reasons for these approaches. This study was conducted by using a descriptive qualitative design. The subjects were two English teachers who taught the tenth grade students at SMA Swasta Melati Hamparan Perak in the 2018/2019 academic year. The data were collected by observing, video recording and interviewing, and were analyzed by using Miles and Huberman techniques. The findings show that the approaches that the teachers used were not focused on enabling the students to be independent or skilful readers. Most of the ways directed the students to become good at reading texts or translating the texts into Bahasa rather than teaching how to comprehend descriptive texts. Most of the approaches were focused on translation, vocabulary enrichment, stating ideas, pronunciation and managing the class. The approaches did not facilitate reading comprehension. ABSTRACT   The main problem of this research was focused on the effective teaching reading comprehension by using paragraph shrinking technique to eight grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Bumi Agung. The objective of this thesis is to know the effectiveness of teaching reading comprehension by using paragraph shrinking technique to eight grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Bumi Agung. In writing this research, the researcher used experimental method. The researcher used two groups of students namely control group students at SMP Negeri 1 Bumi Agung in academic year 2013/2014 with total students were 108 from three classes. The form three classes the researcher took two classes as sample. It was 36 students of VII.A as experimental group and it was 36 students of VII.B as control group which chosen by using cluster random sampling. The data obtained from the test analyzed by using SPSS 19 paired sample t-test. Based on the study, the students in the experimental group who used paragraph shrinking have higher achievement in finding the main idea than the students in control group who did not use paragraph shrinking method.  Learning reading thorough paragraph shrinking encourages students to learn more about main idea. It could be seen from their enthusiasm during the teaching learning process. Based on the calculation above, the researcher got the average score in control group was 58.83 and experimental group was 73.34. The standard error of control group was 1.43 and experimental group was 1.78. Meanwhile, its critical value at 5% (1.99) significant with df = 68 was 6.363, t-obtained 1.99 was higher than t-table as a critical value. In other words, Ho was rejected and Ha was accepted, it means that paragraph shrinking was significantly effective in teaching reading. Based on the finding discussed above, it could be concluded that it was significantly effective to applied paragraph shrinking method in teaching reading.

The aim of this study is to find whetever Murder technique works effectively on improving students’ reading comprehension and to describe the students’ responses towards the application of Murder technique in the learning teaching processes of reading comprehension. The subject of the study in the seventh grade students of SMP Santo Thomas 1 Medan in the Academic Year of 2020/2021 consisting 32 students of class VII-A. This study  was conducted by applying Classroom Action Research (henceforth CAR). The result of the test showed that the students’  mean  score in pre-test is 55,00  with 16% of students got ≥ 70, in formative test is 68,13 with 38% of students got score ≥ 70, and 83,13 in post test  with 100% of students got score ≥ 70. The qualitative data analysis showed that the students’ responses after being taught by using Murder Technique are very good. The percentage students who strongly agree is 26 (81%), agree is 27 (84%), there is no students choose strongly disagree and disagree. It is suggested that the English teachers use Murder Technique as an alternative technique in teaching reading to the students in Junior High School in order to improve their students’ reading comprehension.

Abstract. In this article, several reading theories need to be reviewed in their relationships to read understanding educators and English lecturers. Three other Reading Models, Bottom-Up, Top-Down, and Interactive, are discussed in the Schema Theory at the theoretical stage. The history of reading training, kinds and purposes of reading, and cognitive reading abilities will be discussed in checking the reading understanding. Finally, it reviews six variables that are engaged in understanding English texts.Keywords: comprehension, models of reading, schema theoryAbstrak. Dalam artikel ini, beberapa teori bacaan perlu ditinjau dalam hubungannya untuk membaca pemahaman para pendidik dan dosen bahasa Inggris. Rentetan uji coba, jenis dan tujuan membaca, serta kemampuan membaca kognitif dibahas dalam memastikan pemahaman membaca.
