Currently, the concern about the environmental degradation and the conditions of life of our planet has increased. An alarm literally sounded relating the environmental problems and the uncertainties of the future. An energy revolution is necessary in face of the climate changes. Nature offers numerous possibilities of energy production and Brazil is in a great position in this scenario. It is the greatest producer, consumer and exporter of ethanol. Analyzing the Brazilian sugarcane industry, it is easy to recognize its historical and economic importance. More than ever, this industry has shown environmental solutions with changes in the energy matrix using ethanol as renewable fuel. It is essential to have the industry development in balance with social and environmental values. Thus, the first step to expand this sector would be to identify the social and environmental impacts of the sugarcane industry. Public policies are also acting on the sector and have a prominent role in the scenario.

[email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; 5 [email protected]   RESUMO: O Tocantins, entre os estados do Brasil, é um dos que possuem valores superiores em quantidade de rebanhos de gado de corte, e a bovinocultura de leite cresce de forma continuada, favorecida pelas condições climáticas. Em 2015, o estado produziu 8 milhões de bovinos e bubalinos, 296 mil suínos e 158,9 mil caprinos. As fronteiras socioeconômicas terão uma melhora significativa com a utilização de resíduos gerados na atividade rural para a geração de energia, assim como para a redução dos prejuízos ao meio ambiente, ocasionados pelos resíduos produzidos. Diante do exposto, o objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar o potencial de produção de biogás para a geração de energia, por meio da fermentação de resíduos oriundos da agricultura e pecuária do estado do Tocantins. A metodologia utilizada foi a revisão bibliográfica, a sistemática, a descritiva e a explicativa. Verificou-se, com este artigo, a relevância social, ambiental e econômica da inserção da energia produzida a partir dos resíduos agropecuários na Matriz Energética Brasileira. Ainda que tenham custos para instalar o sistema no Estado, a utilização de digestores fermentativos é uma alternativa para diminuir os problemas com a destinação inadequada dos resíduos agropecuários, além de ser uma forma de energia limpa, este método possuí uma fonte de recursos com o comercio dos créditos de carbono, devido a não emissão do gás metano.   Palavras-chave: resíduos agropecuários, energia, biogás.   STUDY ON THE POSSIBILITY OF BIOGAS PRODUCING FROM AGRICULTURAL WASTE THE STATE OF TOCANTINS   ABSTRACT: Beef and dairy cattle growing is one of the biggest production in the State of Tocantins - Brazil, favored by weather conditions. In 2015, the state produced 8 million cattle and buffalo, 296,000 pigs and 158,900 goats. The socioeconomic boundaries will have a significant improvement with the use of waste generated in rural activity for the generation of energy, as well as the reduction of environmental damage caused by the waste produced. Given the above, the objective of the present work was to evaluate the potential of biogas production for energy generation, through the fermentation of residues from the Tocantins state agriculture and livestock. The methodology used was the literature review, the systematic, the descriptive and the explanatory. This article verified the social, environmental and economic relevance of the insertion of energy produced from agricultural residues in the Brazilian Energy Matrix. Although they have costs to install the system in the state, the use of fermentative digesters is an alternative to reduce the problems with the improper disposal of agricultural residues, besides being a form of clean energy, this method has a source of resources with the trade. carbon credits due to non-emission of methane gas.   Keywords: agricultural residues, energy, biogas.

Geoscientists developed geoethics, an intra-disciplinary field of applied philosophical studies, during the last decade. Reaching beyond the sphere of professional geosciences, it led to professional, cultural, and philosophical approaches to handle the social-ecological structures of our planet ‘wherever human activities interact with the Earth system’. Against the backdrop of the COVID-19 and considering geoscientists’ experiences dealing with disasters (related to hazards like tsunamis, floods, climate changes.), this essay (1) explores the geoethical approach, (2) re-casts geoethics within western philosophical systems, such as the Kantian imperatives, Kohlberg scale of moral adequacy, Jonas’ imperative of responsibility, and (3) advances a ‘geoethical thesis’. The latter takes the form of a hypothesis of a much broader scope of geoethics than initially envisioned. That hypothesis appears by suspecting a relationship between the relative successes in the COVID-19 battle with the positioning of agents (individual, collective, institutional) into ethical frameworks. The turmoil caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, calls for the transfer of experiences between different disciplinary domains to further sustainable governance, hence generalising the geoethical approach. It is emphasized that only when behaving as responsible and knowledgeable citizens, then people of any trade (including [geo-]scientists) can transgress the boundaries of ordinary governance practices with legitimacy.

O presente artigo objetiva discutir e apresentar os resultados das análises feitas sobre a implantação de parques eólicos na região de Sento Sé/BA, seus impactos positivos para a matriz energética brasileira, a relevância do licenciamento ambiental visando evitar os impactos socioambientais negativos e as medidas de mitigação para combater tais impactos. Trata-se de uma pesquisa de natureza qualitativa e de caráter exploratório, e, para delineamento da mesma, utilizou-se de pesquisa bibliográfica para fundamentação teórica. No que diz respeito à coleta de dados, este se deu por meio das técnicas de observação in loco, e análise de discurso da população local. Mediante o que foi pesquisado é possível afirmar que é de fundamental importância a implementação de usinas de energia consideradas limpas e renováveis que possam contribuir para o desenvolvimento sustentável do país, sendo que o Brasil já foi apontado por um estudo do Programa das Nações Unidas para o Meio Ambiente como maior mercado mundial de energia renovável. No entanto, é importante enfatizar a necessidade de considerar as peculiaridades locais, principalmente as do Semiárido brasileiro e, efetivar um rigoroso Estudo de Impacto Ambiental (EIA) e seu consequente Relatório de Impacto Ambiental (RIMA) ao invés de Relatório Ambiental Simplificado (RAS). Palavras-chave: Energia eólica, Impactos Ambientais, Transformações Espaciais.  Parks Wind and Spatial Transformations: an Analysis of Environmental Impacts in the Region of Sento Sé/BA  ABSTRACT This article aims to discuss and present the results of analyzes made on the siting of wind farms in the region of Sento Se / BA, its positive impacts on the Brazilian energy matrix, the relevance of environmental licensing in order to avoid the negative social and environmental impacts and measures mitigation to address such impacts. This is a qualitative research and exploratory, and, for the same design was used for the theoretical literature. With regard to data collection, this was through the techniques of on-site observation and discourse analysis of the local population. By what has been researched is possible to affirm that it is of fundamental importance to the implementation of power plants considered clean and renewable that can contribute to sustainable development of the country, while Brazil has already been pointed out by a study of the United Nations Program for Environment as the largest global market for renewable energy. However, it is important to emphasize the need to consider local peculiarities, especially in the Semi and enforce a rigorous Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and subsequent Environmental Impact Report (RIMA) instead of Simplified Environmental Report (RAS).Keywords: Wind Energy, Environmental Impacts, Spatial Transformations.

Trata-se neste ensaio de uma reflexão que permite subsidiar práticas politicamente avançadas que delineiem ações emancipadas. Nas últimas décadas, a degradação ambiental tem aumentado em níveis insuportáveis, caracterizada por diferentes estágios de desenvolvimento econômico e de ação humana, levando- nos a acreditar que medidas concretas e efetivas precisam ser tomadas no sentido de articular o crescimento das condições socioeconômicas com a sustentabilidade. Um dos caminhos teórico-práticos diz respeito à implantação da Agenda 21, contemplando normas e diretrizes para implementar ações locais e regionais. Thinking over sustainability: a reflection over Agenda 21 Abstract This paper is about a reflection that allows us to subsidise policie advanced which sketch emancipated actions. In the last decades, the environmental degradation has increased to intolerable levels, characterized by different stages of economic development and human action, leading us to believe that real and effective measures have to be taken to articulate the growth of the social economic conditions with sustainabillity. One of the theoretical practical ways concerns the introduction of Agenda 21 which contemplates rules and principles to implement local and regional actions.

The growth in biofuels’ investment brings with it concerns about the social and environmental impacts of the sector. Several tools and frameworks have been used to address these concerns, including the Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) framework. This paper analyzes whether this framework can be applied in contexts where local culture and values shape differently the freedom of speech and engagement, such as in developing countries in which biofuel innovation projects are often implemented. A literature review focused on eight case studies of other authors was used to explore the role of “participation” as a structural element of the RRI framework and the impact of its absence where effective participation in the innovation development process is not possible. In conclusion, we highlight how this inspirational normative framework, designed to influence innovation, is misused to judge its impacts. More than that, the conclusions of such misused applications reflect more the difficulties involved in applying guidelines than the responsible character of the innovation, whose impacts are usually defined upfront materially and measurably.

Recent literature and research on social capital has demonstrated the economic importance of social features, such as trust and norms that facilitate cooperation. This article focuses on the role of social capital in the context of the Czech agricultural sector. Obtaining credit, sharing machinery, and proliferating information serves as examples where an awareness and reliance on the social capital of rural communities matter. By forming groups and strengthening existing networks, Czech farmers can improve their productivity, as well as their welfare. The article concludes by warning that the Czech state cannot invest directly in social capital, but should create the necessary legal and economic incentives to encourage the formation of social capital.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to identify and categorize the social and environmental impacts of transportation systems, and address the appropriate solutions to mitigate and manage these impacts in order to achieve sustainability. Design/methodology/approach – This research performs a comprehensive literature review to suggest a framework on socio-environmental impacts of transportation and related solutions. The proposed framework is analyzed through quantitative methods and a survey study in freight transport. Findings – Findings support the direct relation of potential solutions and socio-environmental impacts of transportation. All four categories of solutions (technological, socio-economic and political, cultural and behavioral, and infrastructure related) reveal direct impact on reduction of environmental impacts. However only technological solutions were found to be influential on social impacts of the transportation. Originality/value – To the best of the authors’ knowledge there has not been any comprehensive framework covering social and environmental impacts of transportation in the literature. In addition, this paper categorizes potential solutions to enhance socio-environmental performance of the transportation and investigates their effectiveness.

The correlation between the development of the world’s population is examined and, in connection with this, the expansion and development of the list of problems necessary for solving the problems of life support for a growing population is considered. It is indicated that the solution of these problems will contribute to the consumption of energy resources, which requires the identification and implementation of alternative sources. It was noted and justified that for this purpose the most promising in this direction around the world are biomass, which are involved in the production of renewable fuel bioenergy based on them. The classification and possibilities of biofuel compositions and the technology of thermochemical production of them and on their basis thermal energy, electricity and the development of bio-based chemicals and materials from biomass are given. The modularity of production was confirmed, including the collection, conversion, energy supply, classification and processing of the remains - products of these stages of production. A list of factors that negatively affect the social, economic and environmental conditions is formulated.
