Aims: The aim of this study was to investigate the association between personality traits and attitudes toward learning communication skills in undergraduate medical students. The relation between students’ attitudes and personality trait could help us identify those who those who will need more support to develop communication skills, based on their personality traits. Methods: The data was collected data from an intentional and cross-sectional sample composed of 204 students from three Brazilian universities. The students answered questionnaires containing the Communication Skills Attitude Scale (CSAS-BR) and the Big Five Mini-Markers (BFMM) for personality. Data were analyzed using frequency calculations, principal components analysis, and the multiple linear regression model. Results: Seven among 26 items of the original Communication Skills Attitude Scale (CSAS) presented factor loads lower than |0.30| and must be excluded in the CSAS -BR that showed one domain including positive and negative attitudes. The value of Cronbach’s alpha of the 19-item scale was 0.894. The BFMM showed similar dimensional results with five domains with Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.804 for Extroversion, 0.753 for agreeableness, 0.755 for conscientiousness, 0.780 for neuroticism and 0.668 for openness. There were positive and statically significant linear associations with the CSAS-BR and agreeableness (β: 0.230, p<0.001), extraversion (β: 0.150, p=0.030), and openness to experience (β: 0.190, p=0.010). These personality factors drive social interactions and interpersonal relations, which involve the tendency to be friendly, flexible, and cooperative; to show a willing disposition; and the ability to actively engage with others. Conclusions: Based on the methods applied in this study, the results demonstrated a relation between agreeableness, extraversion and openness to experience with attitudes on communication skills in students from three Brazilian universities. Our results suggest that the evaluation of personality traits can contribute to the recognition of students for whom the establishment of special teaching strategies can improve communication skills.

Abstract PurposeThe Activity Impairment Assessment (AIA) is a 5 items questionnaire exploring the impact of acute cystitis on daily activities. It’s a self-administrated tool easy to use in primary care studies. The purpose of this study is to translate and validate a French version of the AIA: the AIA-fr.MethodsWe use a forward-backward translation before to analyze the psychometric properties of the French version. We proceeded to a quantitative, prospective, observational multicentric study. King Health Questionnaire and Ditrovie scale were used to determine convergent and divergent validity. Following an inclusion visit, each file was completed by the patient on day 0, 3 and 5.ResultsFifty-two files were received by the investigator of which two empty files. In the end, 50 files were included in the study. There was a 100% response rate for the AIA-fr on days 0, 3 and 5. Cronbach’s alpha was calculated at 0.87 with a 95% confidence interval between 0.78 and 0.92. We found that this coefficient was not improved by removing one of the items (Cronbach’s alpha 0.81–0.87). There is a negative correlation (p = 0.01 Rs = − 0.35) between the total AIA-fr score and the number of days between symptom onset and consultation (day 0). This implies that the higher the AIA-fr score the sooner women will seek medical care.ConclusionsThe French version of the AIA is a psychometrically acceptable self-report questionnaire for measuring the impact of acute cystitis on daily activities. It’s the first French tool evaluating this impact.

Introduction It is required to have validated instruments in health science students that identify unhealthy habits and assess the impact of educational interventions and programs aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle. Objective To evaluate the validity and reliability of an instrument to measure medical students' lifestyles. Methods A lifestyle questionnaire was developed using the Delphi technique by a group of experts. The final questionnaire was applied to 332 students of the School of Medicine of the Ricardo Palma University in 2017. A preliminary examination was carried out to assess preconditions for construct validity—including the correlation matrix, the Kaiser Meyer Olkin statistic, and the Bartlett sphericity test. Factor analysis was used for construct validity, and the possible resulting factors were extracted through the principal component analysis. Cronbach's alpha coefficient was calculated to assess the instrument reliability. Results In this study, 41.6% of participants were men with a mean age of 20 years (standard deviation = 3). The preconditions for the factor analysis were a Kaiser Meyer Olkin coefficient = 0.773 and a significant Bartlett sphericity test. For the 47 items of the final questionnaire, the factor analysis showed an explained variance of 56.7% with eigenvalues greater than one. Cronbach's alpha was 0.78. The final questionnaire could assume values between -23 to 151 points. Based on a cut point of 71 points, the prevalence of students with an unhealthy lifestyle was 73.6%. Conclusion The developed instrument has acceptable validity and reliability to measure lifestyle in medical students. For external validation, studies in other university populations are suggested.

Keywords: confidence intervals, Cronbach's alpha, effect size, factor analysis, hypothesis testing, sample size, structural equation modelingAbstract. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to fulfilling the objectives of social sciences research such as proper estimation, explanation, prediction and control of levels of social reality variables and their interrelationships, especially when dealing with quantitative variables. It was shown that the sample size or the number of observations to be collected and analyzed is transcendental for the adequacy of the method of statistical inference selected and for the impact degree achieved in its results, especially for complying with reports guidelines issued by the American Psychological Association. Methods and formulations were investigated to determine the sample sizes that contribute to have good levels of estimation when establishing confidence intervals, with reasonable wide and relevant and significative magnitudes of the effects. Practical rules suggested by several researchers when determining samples sizes were tested and as a result it was integrated a guide for determining sample sizes for dichotomous, continuous, discrete and Likert variables, correlation and regression methods, factor analysis, Cronbach's alpha, and structural equation models. It is recommended that the reader builds scenarios with this guide and be aware of the implications and relevance in scientific research and decision making of the sample sizes in trying to meet the aforementioned objectives.

Background: Measuring the state of health is a method for quantifying the impact of an illness on the day-to-day life, health and wellbeing of a patient, providing a quantitative measure of an individual’s quality of life (QoL). QoL expresses patient point of view by a subjective dimension and can express the results of medical intervention. Pulmonary rehabilitation is an essential component in the management of COPD patients, and measuring QoL has become a central focus in the study of this disease. Although nowadays several questionnaires for measuring the QoL in COPD patients are available, there are no questionnaires specifically developed for evaluating QoL in COPD patients undergoing respiratory rehabilitation. The aim of this study was to develop a novel questionnaire for the QoL quantification in COPD patients undergoing in-patient pulmonary rehabilitation program. Methods: The questionnaire, administered to COPD patients undergoing long-term oxygen therapy into a respiratory rehabilitation ward, was developed by a simple and graphic layout to be administered to elderly patients. It included one form for admission and another for discharge. It included only tips related to the subjective components of QoL that would be relevant for patient, although likely not strictly related to the respiratory function. A descriptive analysis was performed for the socio-demographic characteristics and both the non-parametric Wilcoxon T-test and the Cronbach’s alpha index were calculated for evaluating the sensitivity of the questionnaire to the effects of respiratory rehabilitation and for identifying its consistency. Results: The physical and psychological condition of the 34 COPD patients improved after the rehabilitative treatment and this finding was detected by the questionnaire (overall improvement: 14.2±2.5%), as confirmed by the non-parametric Wilcoxon test (p<0.01). The consistency detected by the Cronbach’s alpha was good for both the questionnaire at admission and at discharge (0.789±0.084 and 0.784±0.145, respectively), although some items did not adequately measure the intended outcome. Conclusions: This proposed questionnaire represents a substantial innovation compared to previous methods for evaluating the QoL, since it has been specifically designed for hospitalized COPD patients undergoing respiratory rehabilitation with serious respiratory deficiency, allowing to effectively determining the QoL in these patients.
