Good teaching material can be defined as a material that is based on the results of needs analysis, so that it is not only about the significant effect on improving students' ability to write scientific articles but also the increasement of students’ knowledge and understanding on writing research articles. The purpose of this study was to analyze the level of students’ needs related to teaching material about how to write research articles based on the criteria of reputable journals. The research design used was survey research. Data was collected using a questionnaire related to the students’ needs toward teaching materials. The questionnaires were distributed to 120 students of English Language Teaching study programs who had learned article writing course. The results showed that the level of student needs regarding abstract and conclusion section are in the High category. Besides, the introduction, literature review, and methodological section are in the Very High category. From these findings, it can be concluded that the students' needs for teaching material related to English writing research articles based on the criteria of reputable journals is very high. Thus, teaching material writing research articles in English based on the criteria of reputable journals really needs to be developed.

Students in a high level of education must have been familiar with a great number of publications, including research articles. However, they might not have been experienced in writing and publishing their own research articles. This study reports the results of training 15 EFL students in the Doctorate Program in English Language Teaching (ELT) of an Indonesian university to carry out research and write the reports in the form of research articles. More particularly, it examined the students’ perception on the training in writing research articles for publication. The students attended 16-week course, Research on Second Language Writing, one of the courses offered in the university. The students were trained to understand the nature of research articles and practice in conducting research and writing their research articles. At the end of the course, they were requested to give responses to questions on whether or not they were assisted in writing research article abstracts; in developing the abstracts into research articles; and in developing sections of the research articles. The results showed that the students informed that they were assisted in writing research article abstracts, in developing abstracts into research articles, and in developing sections of the research articles.

<em>As an effort to give contribution to the existing knowledge, it is expected for the undergraduate students to compose an engaging research article in order to convince the readers about the importance of the research article. However, there is only a little attention given to the articles written by the undergraduate students although it is considered very critical to examine whether the exposure of English academic writing has significantly enhances the writing competence of the students. Furthermore, as it is also very crucial to build a meaningful semantic meaning among the sentences in order to disclose the worthiness of the research article, it is essential to analyze the cohesion of the research article written by the undergraduate students. Henceforth, the present research is projected to investigate the cohesion of the research articles written by the undergraduate students of English Language Teaching. As the introduction section of research article is likely to be an area to portray the logical explanation of the research, the present research solely focuses on examining the cohesion of the introduction section of research article. By adopting a qualitative design and involving several steps to analyze the introduction section, it is revealed that the grammatical cohesion is considered to be the most utilized type of cohesion in writing the introduction section. Still, the lexical cohesion is also necessary to build an eloquent semantic meaning about the topic as well the importance of the research article.</em>

As the flourishing of computer technology and the appearing of lots of large-scale and well-designed corpora and concordance software, corpus-based approach, an advanced teaching resources, has been widely employed in language researches of various fields and perspectives. English teaching material, the main source of language input, has the quality and authority in Chinese English language teaching classes. The present study attempts to bring about some innovations in construction and designing of teaching material on the basis of the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA). Moreover, the research is intended to effectively improve teacher’s input and introducing data-driven learning (DDL), and to effectively stimulate the motivations of students by using this computer-aided and COCA-based designing.

The present article discusses the importance of language, in general, and English, in particular, in the context of engineering education in Nepal. It mainly discusses the importance and application of language laboratory for the enhancement of skills and proficiency of English language in the learners of Bachelor's level in engineering in Nepal. The main objective of the present article is to highlight the importance of teaching and learning of English language in the B.E. level in engineering by using language laboratory. In course of the present study, literature available in different accessible sources was reviewed for collecting necessary data and designing theoretical framework for the same. From the study, it has been found that language laboratory is tremendously helpful in creating favourable atmoshphere for language learning and helping the learners to acquire necessary language skills useful to them in sharpening their study at present and streamlining their research and innovative activities in their further studies in the future. English language is now the language of worldwide communication, and therefore, it is very essential for the students of engineering to be proficient in communication through English not only for grabbing job opportunities open at present but also to furthering their future research and innovative endeavors and publishing their reports and research articles based on them. The main problem faced by EFL students in writing English texts includes the difficulties to produce a cohesive and coherent text that it seems necessary to show how the tools of Theme and Rheme can be used to help construct the students' good English writing. This study aimed to find out the types of thematic progression patterns in each clause of the recount texts written by students and the dominant pattern of thematic progression revealed from the texts. The research design of this study is a qualitative method which employed the study instrument of the students' recount texts at class IX of SMAN 2 Langsa, Aceh. A content analysis approach by using a Theme and Rheme framework generated from a theory of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) was used to analyze the thematic progression patterns on the students' recount texts, which included several steps: reading the student's texts, identifying the theme and rheme of every clause of the student's text, describing the thematic progression patterns of student's text and drawing the thematic progression pattern on student's text. The findings of the analysis indicated that there are three (3) thematic progression patterns found on the students' recount texts: the Theme Constant, the Theme Zig Zag Linear pattern and Theme Multiple patterns. The dominant type of thematic progression patterns constructed by the students into their recount texts was revealed mostly on 123 constant or reiteration patterns (76.8%), followed by zig-zag patterns of 35 times (21.8%)  and 9 times (1.25%) of multiple patterns. The results of this study will be facilitative as the tools for English language teaching and learning classrooms particularly for writing English texts.

Everybody has Instagram account in this digital era. The lecturer uses Instagram as the media in English Language Teaching. The lecturer asks the students to write their idea in English as Instagram caption. This study presents the students’ perceptions of using social media, Instagram. All the participants in this study are students of Mathematic Study Program who enroll in English class at Nahdlatul Ulama University Purwokerto. The data were analyzed by using both quantitative and qualitative method. The data taken from survey through questionnaire were analyzed quantitatively. Then, the researcher used qualitative analysis to present the data from interview. The finding showed that the students’ perceived the advantages and disadvantages of using Instagram caption. The advantages showed that the participants have a positive perception of Instagram caption as a media in English Language Teaching. First, it stimulated the students to develop positive attitude in creative writing. Second, it improved students’ grammatical competences. The last, it enhanced the students’ motivation in English writing. Three disadvantages of using instagram as a media in teaching English included internet connection problem, low engagement rate of students’ in Instagram, and language barrier. Some of the students still used Google Translate (GT) to ensure that their sentences were correct. Keywords: Students’ Perceptions, Instagram, English Language Teaching

Research articles have been considered as the primary media of knowledge production. Nevertheless, for some undergraduate students, writing a research article can be a challenging task since they need to be aware of its rhetorical styles. Even though previous studies have been conducted to reveal the rhetorical styles of scientific papers, yet tend to focus more on research articles obtained from well-established journals. Hence, this study aims to reveal the rhetorical styles and draw the rhetoric pattern from the introduction section of 73 research articles written by the undergraduate students of English Language Education (ELE) at a state university in Yogyakarta. This is a qualitative investigation whose data were collected by random sampling technique and went through Safnil’s (2013) four analysis stages. As the primary framework for analysis, the modified CARS (Create a Research Space) model (Swales Feak, 2004) was adopted. The results show that Step 2: Making topic generalization in Move 1 and Step 1B: Indicating a gap in Move 2 are the obligatory steps in writing the introduction section. Nevertheless, the results reveal that mostly undergraduate research papers lack 1 step in Move 1, 2 steps in Move 2, and 3 steps in Move 3. The omission of steps in the CARS model by these student-authors seems to happen due to two major factors, namely the scarcity of control over the writing process and linguistic resources, hence suggesting pedagogical implications for academic writing courses.
