Les forêts d’Afrique centrale contiennent plusieurs produits d’origine animale et végétale. Les produits d’origine végétale peuvent se distinguer en produits forestiers ligneux et non ligneux. Le présent travail de recherche porte sur l’importance et la gestion durable de quelques Produits Forestiers Non Ligneux (PFNL), notamment l’écorce de trois arbres (Garcinia lucida, Scorodophloeus zenkeri, Alstonia boonei) dans la localité de Ngovayang I. À l’aide d’un questionnaire semi-structuré, les caractéristiques du secteur des PFNL, les stratégies de gestion, ainsi que l’impact de la valorisation des PFNL ont été déterminés. Il ressort des enquêtes que les écorces de ces trois espèces sont connues et utilisées à des fins diverses telles que la consommation, l’automédication et la vente. L’initiation à l’utilisation de l’écorce de ces espèces est liée au sexe et est également fonction de l’âge des enquêtés. Leurs écorces sont approvisionnées sur le marché et vendues en majorité par les hommes. G. lucida et S. zenkeri sont utilisées à des fins nutritionnelles, médicinales et lucratives, tandis qu’Alstonia boonei est utilisée exclusivement à des fins médicinales. Pour des personnes plus jeunes, d’une tranche d’âge comprise entre 15 et 35 ans, l’exploitation de l’écorce de ces trois espèces n’a aucun impact néfaste sur la disponibilité des ressources forestières. S’agissant des personnes âgées de 35 à 65 ans, l’exploitation non contrôlée et l’écorçage anarchique de G. lucida et de S. zenkeri peuvent entrainer leur pénurie et même leur disparition dans cette région. Toutefois, la récolte échelonnée de l’écorce de G. lucida, S. zenkeri et A. boonei est utilisée comme stratégie de gestion de l’écorce de ces arbres dans cette localité.   Central African forests are teemed with several goods of animal and plant origin. Goods of plant origin are forest products and non-timber forest products. This research work focused on the identification and importance of some non-timber forest products (NTFPs), especially the bark of tree species (Garcinia lucida, Scorodophloeus zenkeri and Alstonia boonei) in the locality of Ngovayang I. Using a semi-structured questionnaire, the characteristics of the NTFP sector, management strategies, and the impact of NTFP exploitation were determined in Ngovayang I. Surveys show that the bark of these three species is well known and used for various purposes such as consumption, self-medication and sale. The initiation of the use of the bark of these species is linked to sex and also depends on the age of the respondents. Their bark is supplied on the market and sold mostly by men. G. lucida and S. zenkeri are used for food, medicinal and profit-making purposes, while A. boonei is used exclusively for medicinal purposes. For younger people, aged between 15 and 35 years old, the exploitation of the bark of these three species has no negative impact on forest resources. For old people (35 to 65 years), the uncontrolled exploitation and uncontrolled debarking of G. lucida and S. zenkeri can lead to the shortage and even extinction of these two tree species in the region. However, the planned harvest of the bark of Garcinia lucida, Scorodophloeus zenkeri and Alstonia boonei is used as strategy of management of the bark of these trees in this locality.

Trees providing non-timber forest products (NTFPs) are valuable forest resources, and their management can support conservation objectives. We analyzed the abundance of tree species providing NTFPs, recognized by local H’mong people, in both the strictly protected core zone and the low-intensity forest use buffer zone in north-western Vietnam. We identified 249 tree species, of which 48% were classified as NTFP species. The abundance of 35% of the NTFP tree species was significantly correlated with footpaths, indicating an influence of human activity. A multiple logistic regression model indicates that using NTFP trees for food, medicine, and root harvesting, increases the probability of an NTFP tree absence in the buffer zone. In contrast, the high density of species, and collections of fruit, leaf, and resin decrease the probability of an NTFP tree absence in the buffer zone. Further assessment with a logistic model indicated that NTFP use has lower impacts on the tree community than timber use. We think that the parameterized models will enable comparisons of different situations and forest types and be particularly helpful in evaluating potential changes in tree communities over time.

Forest is a resources system which has prospective materials to be used for human needs. Local people within everyday life are very dependent on the natural surroundings, as well as the use of nature for human needs tend to increase. The purpose of this research is to do the analysis of vegetation and determine the potential use of non-timber forest products in Kampung Pagai, Airu District, Jayapura. The method used for the analysis of vegetation is the square plot, while the method to figure out the potential of non-timber forest adopts the method developed by Waluyo (2004). The results showed that there are at least 39 species of trees belonging to the 26 families. Regeneration of trees showed the condition which is good based on the diversity of tree species in the Sapling level, especially matoa (Pometia pinnata), kayu besi (Instia bijuga), and various plants of Ficus ssp. The potential uses of non-timber forest are also quite high. Several types of plants can be used as building materials and accessories, medicines, ornaments (including orchids), fruits, and vegetables. Key words: forest, vegetation, non-timber forest product, Airu District, Jayapura.

The potential of multipurpose tree species as sources of non-timber forest products (NTFP) in the Centre and East of Côte d'Ivoire and their introduction into the agricultural systems were analysed in order to stabilise,diversify and intensify the local agricultural production in a sustainable way. The species with a special interest for the local population were identified and assessed among 25 NTFP tree species of 44 coffee and cocoa plantations. Five feasible agroforestry systems are proposed.

Non-timber forest products (NTFPs) and some forest tree species are an important source of livelihood to communities. Unfortunately, their potential and uses are much unknown by the population or organization responsible for conservation. It is for this reason that this study was carried out in the village of Minko’o to assess this potential, and to show their importance. A socio-economic survey was carried out in the village and GPS coordinates of the identified NTFPs and forest trees was recorded from the farms/plantations and forest visited. A total of 20 households were surveyed in order to identify the different NTFPs and their utility for the population. Our findings revealed that 50% of the harvest of NTFPs and forest species is done by picking and 45% by collection. Some NTFPs and forest products were known and used by the people. Some of these resources were not known and therefore under exploited. It is the case of Cola (Cola nitida), Soursop (Persea muricata), Akom (Terminalia superba), Mfo (Enantia Chlorantha), Kassimang (Spondias purpurea). Most of NTFPs were grown by the populations and the preferred NTFP was the avocado tree. The forest tree species are mainly used for medicinal purposes. Other trees were used for construction.

Abstract Meranti (Shorea spp.) is a commercial timber tree species of Indonesian forest potentially to be developed for Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs). We explored the NTFPs perspective of three Meranti species, Shorea hopeifolia (F.Heim) Symington, Shorea ovalis (Korth.) Blume, and Shorea balangeran Burk, by identifying the content of phytochemical compounds. Data collection methods include: exploration, identification to obtain the accuracy of the species scientific name, and analysis the phytochemical content using Gas Chromatographic Mass Spectrometer (GCMS) pyrolysis. We revealed the bark of the tree species contained phytochemical compounds potential for medicinal ingredients especially for antidiabetic, antioxidant, and anticancer. Since the exploitation of the bark is better than the trees, the potential use of non-timber forest products of the meranti supports the conservation of the species. Further research to unveil other benefits of the meranti species should be conducted.

Repong Damar is a form of hereditary since the days of the Dutch colonial government owned by the Krui Lampung people in the West Coast. Repong damar functions as a buffer zone in the Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park. The flagship product from Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) in Indonesia found in Krui Pesisir Barat is Damar Mata cat (Shorea javanica). The management and use of resin repong can cause various types of plants. Damar reong found in the Regency of Pesisir Barat has very important benefits for life, and therefore it is necessary to act as a preservation effort for this repong damar to remain sustainable and continue to grow. One of the efforts made is to analyze the diversity of tree species that are in the resin dunk. This study aims to determine the diversity of tree species in the Central Pongir Pongon Repong Pahmungan and Tenumbang Pekon Coastal Equipment and to compare the diversity of tree species in the Central Pekon Pahmungan and South Pekon Tenumbang Pekon Coastal Areas. This research was conducted in August-September 2019 which is located in two locations, namely Tenumbang Pekon, Pesisir Selatan District and Pahmungan Pahmungan Tengah Pesisir Tengah District, Pesisir Barat District. The method used to determine the diversity of tree species using the plot line method where the determination of the plot starting point is done by Systematic sampling with random sampling. Analysis of the data to be used is the relative density (KR), relative frequency (FR), and relative closure area (CR). Importance Value Index (INP) = KR + FR + CR (Indriyanto, 2006). The Diversity Index used is the Shanon Wiener Diversity Index (H '). The results of the research that have been carried out there are 28 species of trees found in Pahonungan Pahmungan, Central Pesisir Tengah and 32 species found in Tenumbang Pekon, Pesisir Selatan District and Diversity of tree species in Pahonungan Pekm Tengah, Pesisir Tengah District, 1.86 and Diversity of tree species in Pekon Tenumbang. Pesisir Selatan District at 2.44.

Abstract Ecosystems degradation, and consequently biodiversity loss, has severe impacts on people around the world. The Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) is one of the international initiatives that have emerged to inform policy makers and aid decisions to prevent further global biodiversity loss, focusing on the interdependence between natural systems and human culture. IPBES promotes the use of scenarios and modelling approaches as a fundamental tool to advance the understanding of the relationships between drivers of change, Nature’s Contributions to People (NCP), and social systems. Local-scale case studies with a system approach demonstrating how current knowledge can be used to inform decision-making are still scarce. Here, we present a comprehensive conceptual model and a series of four scenarios under different policies for shea tree species management, as a case-study of applying systems thinking and the NCP concept to a local-scale socio-ecological system. We first characterized the central processes, NCP, drivers and pressures affecting the shea tree system, to investigate the impacts of the multiple uses of the shea tree species on the system as a whole. We then described potential policy options, developed four scenarios, and evaluated them by a Bayesian Belief Network (BBN). We predicted qualitative outcomes of the proposed scenarios: Business-as-usual (BAU), “Conservation and fair trade”, “Agroforestry and fair trade” and “Industrial development”. We found that the scenarios focussing on conservation, fair trade and agroforestry, can improve the conservation status of shea trees, and enhance wellbeing in the local communities. In this case study, we demonstrate that the development of a comprehensive conceptual model at a local scale can be a useful exercise to identify opportunities for effective policy strategies and social innovation. The shea tree case study can provide an example for modelling non-timber forest products in other regions around the world that face similar drivers and pressures. Species for which this model could be adapted include Central and South American species such as the Brazilian nut (Bertholletia excelsa), cocoa (Theobroma cacao), andiroba (Carapa guianensis), açai (Euterpe oleracea) and the wax palm (Ceroxylon quindiuense). The model and workflow applied here may thus be used to understand similar socio-ecological systems with local and international economic value across the Neotropical region.

Protected Areas (PAs) are created for the protection and maintenance of biological diversity, but many of Ghana’s PAs are subjectto severe pressures and threats, the main pressures being the illegal extraction of natural resources. Rattans are indisputablyone of the most important Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) in Ghana’s Protected Areas that is without doubt one of thereasons for which it has drawn the attention of researchers. In this study the illegal rattan extraction patterns in the AnkasaConservation Area (ACA) in Ghana was inspected. Simple random sampling and Snowball sampling techniques were used. Datacollection employed the use of semi-structured questionnaires, interviews and field enumeration of rattans as well as an analysisof Effective Patrol Man-days (EPMDS) from 2004 to 2012. The results showed a significant positive correlation (r = 0.75, p<0.05, r2 = 0.557) between patrol effort and rattan extraction encounters. In addition, there was a general reduction in illegalrattan extraction encounters from 2004 to 2012 at a rate of 4.3 per year. The highest illegal rattan extraction incidences wererecorded in 2006 (76 encounters), 2005 (35 encounters), 2008 (22 encounters), 2004 (18 encounters) and the least incidencewere recorded in both 2010 (3 encounters) and 2011 (3 encounters).The research also revealed that Eremospatha macrocarpawas the most extracted rattan species followed by Laccosperma secundiflorum. The major rattan extraction and trade routesoriginate in the northern parts and in the area east of the reserve and also south of Draw River Forest Reserve. Generally, rattanpoaching in Ankasa Conservation Area has declined, but there are still human incursions in the northern part of the reserve. Thestudy recommended an intensification of patrols in the north of the reserve. Also, enrichment planting and Agroforestry practicesof inter-cropping rattans with seasonal crops should be pursued vigorously for the local communities.
