Paper discussed the influence of exhaust system leakage on the utility parameters and toxic combustion products emission of a turbocharged passenger car spark ignition engine. A comparative analysis of the data gathered in the research carried out using the MAHA MSR 500 single roller chassis dynamometer was conducted, where the exhaust system was sealed and leaking in the area of the wideband oxygen sensor mounting bracket. The presented data refers to among others: the emissions of harmful gasoline oxidation products (HC, CO), the courses of power generated by the engine and the momentary values of excess air ratio. The EUDC driving cycle was used in the research.

Turbocharging of an internal combustion engine is the most common technique to improve an engines’ performance. In present it is not hard to meet vehicles on the road with turbocharged SI engines, which have a high mileage, and because of this fact there is a high risk of exhaust systems leak. This might have its influence not only on the emissions, but also on the vehicles performance. Thereby this dissertation shows the comparative analysis of the influence of exhaust system leak in the catalyzer input on the exhaust gasses composition in the catalyzer output and the operation parameters of an turbocharged SI engine. During the research some parameters were recorded and compared, e. g.: the engines power and torque, the injec-tors opening time, the oxygen sensors voltage signals in the input and in the output of the catalyzer, the concentration of harmful gasses in the exhaust tailpipe. The research was conducted with the use of a single roller MAHA MSR 500 chassis dynamometer. A series of torque measurements was performed. Under these measurements a simulation of the exhaust system leakage of a turbocharged SI passenger car engine was made. As a result three variations of the wideband oxygen sensor acting were reached. The wideband sensor is mounted between the turbocharger unit and the input of the catalyzer. In the test the influence of the leakage on the injector’s opening time and the composition of harmful exhaust substances were pointed.

Misfiring in spark ignition engines should be avoided, otherwise unburned fuel and oxygen are brought into the catalyst, and subsequent combustion greatly increases the temperature, possibly resulting in immediate damage to the catalyst. As a new concept of misfire detection method, the signal fluctuation of a wide-range oxygen sensor has been introduced to monitor the fluctuation of the oxygen concentration at the exhaust manifold confluence point. The current research aims to develop a tool that is capable of predicting the variation in oxygen concentration at the exhaust manifold confluence point, and to investigate the flow characteristics of the misfired gas in the exhaust manifold under misfiring conditions in a cylinder. The oxygen concentration at the confluence point could be predicted by comparing the gas flowrate from the misfiring cylinder with the total exhaust gas flowrate. The gas flowrates from each of the cylinders were calculated using a one-dimensional engine cycle simulation including a gas dynamic model of the intake and exhaust systems. The variation in oxygen concentration was also determined experimentally using a fast-response hydrocarbon analyser. The trend of the oxygen concentration fluctuation calculated by the analytical model was compared with the experimental results. The analytical model could duplicate the measured trend of the fluctuation of oxygen concentration at the confluence point, which was characterized by twin peaks for one misfiring. The twin peaks are mainly caused by the mixing of the misfired gas with the burned gas from normally operating cylinders. The effects of engine load and speed on the characteristics of the variation in oxygen concentration were also investigated analytically and experimentally.

The article tackles the issues related to a process of heating of three way catalytic converter during the cold start and the heating of the spark ignition engine. The measurements on the test bench were performed, taking into consideration how engine works directly after the start, on the idle speed and under the load, during which the temperature of the exhaust gases in the exhaust system and coolant on the cylinder head were measured. At the same time the track of the heat state of the catalytic converter was monitored using thermo-vision camera. The results of the measurements were presented as charts and selected thermo-grams, qualitatively representing the issue of heating of the catalytic converter.

This article presents a detailed analysis of the potential of dimethyl ether (DME) fuel applications in SI engines. This paper presents the tests results completed on an 1.6-dm3 Opel Astra engine fueled by gaseous fuel as a mixture of LPG and DME. Dimethyl ether is a fuel with properties similar to liquid LPG fuel. In addition, DME is very well miscible with LPG, hence the possibility of creating a mixture with any DME divisions. The assessment of the possibility of using DME as a component of the mixture was carried out with the use of a chassis dynamometer and equipment, enabling an analysis of the changes taking place inside the cylinder. The results of the analyses are the parameters of the thermodynamic processes describing changes in the engine cylinder.

The results of the studies conducted on the chassis dynamometer for a vehicle powered with a spark-ignition engine are presented in the study. The tested vehicle was equipped with an unsupercharged engine. There was tested the noise level of the engine powered with ethyl alcohol at variable settings of the fuel injection. In the course of the tests, the dose of fuel was increased within the range from the manufacturer’s settings respectively by: 5%, 10%, 20% 30% and 50% of the nominal dose, and the ignition advance angle with reference to manufacturer’s settings was increased respectively by 00 and 30 . It was found, that the noise level for the engine powered with ethanol decreases together with the increase of the fuel’s dose, (up to about 110% of the nominal dose), and then increases. At the same time, the increase of the noise level for the increased value of the ignition advance angle was found.
