Palavras-chave: Rua do Catete; Flânerie; Flâneur; Intervenção Urbana. Abstract The human being is a being that moves with or without intention or objective. Abstract This paper focuses on Santa Cruz Fortress, built in 1555 in Jurujuba (Niterói), to guard the entrance of Guanabara bay, and stresses its role as a towist attraction and leisure' area, as a social fix which links the city of Niterói to the complementary circuit of these activities in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The study uses important concepts and analytic categories fiom social sciences, particularly fiom Geography. In the spatial dynamic of the city of Niterói, change in functions of social fuces has been extraordinary. Single-family dwellings, buildings and even military installations have been re-functionalized, undergoing a process of touristification. In that way, the refunctionalization of the Fortress as a cultural space provides an important attraction in the domains of history, patrimony, and culture, providing the urban space with an expression of monumentality, created by man as a symbol of his ideals, aims and actions, a legacy to future generations forming a link between past, present and future.

This article introduces partial discussions from a doctoral research in progress that has as object of study the tendency to paci cation and concealment of con icts veri ed in the production process of contemporary urban space - particularly in the most recent Brazil- ian cities - as well as its strategies and mechanisms of control. As a eld of study, it is proposed the city of Palmas, capital of Tocantins, last planned capital of the twentieth century, founded on May 20, 1989, a year that symbolizes the opening of the Western world to the neoliberal economic policy. Based on the observation of the absence of signi cant movements of resistance to the urban space production process at Palmas and interpreting it as a re ection of pacifying tendency of consensus and appeasement / masking of con icts as a feature of neoliberal city, we propose the hypothesis of physical and territorial con guration of the city as a laboratory of the neoliberal model of urban management, in which socio-spa- tial dynamics gradually developed in other contemporary cities through processes historically constructed, get explicit and take place, immediately or in a very short time. Through a historical ap- proach to the context of its creation and occupation, we propose an urban space production reading based on the recognition of char- acteristics relating to its conditions of New Town and neoliberal city as well as the incipient action of the social movements dedicated to the struggles for housing as social agents in this process.

The city of Rio de Janeiro underwent profound changes between 1870 and the early 20th century. Its population grew dramatically, attracting migrants not only from abroad but also from other regions of Brazil. It also expanded significantly in size, as the construction of trolley and railway lines and the introduction of real estate capital powered the occupation of new areas. Meanwhile, urban reforms aimed at modernization transformed the social ways in which urban space was used. During this period, Rio de Janeiro went from being the capital of the Brazilian Empire to being the capital of the Brazilian Republic. It nevertheless maintained its position as the cultural, political-administrative, commercial, and financial center of the country. Against this backdrop of change, the city was an important arena for the political struggles that marked the period, including demonstrations in favor of abolition and the republic. Rio de Janeiro’s citizens were not inert during this period of transformation, and they found various ways to take action and fight for what they understood to be their rights. Protests, demands, petitions, and a vibrant life organized around social and political associations are examples of the broad repertoire used by the city’s inhabitants to gain a voice in municipal affairs. Citizens’ use of public demands and petitions as a channel to communicate with the authorities, and especially with city officials, shows that while they did not necessarily shun formal politics, they understood politics to be a sphere for dialogue and dispute. The sociocultural history of Rio de Janeiro during this period was therefore built precisely through confrontations and negotiations in which the common people played an active role.

The paper considers the main concepts of studying the city in various fields of scientific knowledge, analyzes the approaches and interaction of sciences in the general knowledge of urban space. Each science interprets the understanding of the city in its own way and considers its elements from the point of view of its competence. The use of methodological tools of philosophy as an integral system of scientific knowledge allows us to analyze the obtained data and lead them to a single model of substantiation of specific features of the city, which is a unique phenomenon of human life. However, each science, relying only on its own empirical material, makes a mistake: it creates an ideal image that does not always correspond to the real picture. Each researcher focuses on specific elements of study, thereby giving them priority in understanding the urban environment. This fact actualizes the method of interdisciplinary study of the urban phenomenon. In the context of sociohumanitary studies based on the methods of sociology, demography, political science and cultural studies, the city is considered as an environment for the exercise of power, in which the dependence of sociodynamic processes on the nature of institutional restrictions imposed by power structures on the population increases.

This chapter draws upon and contributes to discussions about the homologous relationship between early cinema and urban space. It focuses on the ways in which the introduction and development of film in Brazil was part of a project of urban transformation that took place in the country’s then capital, Rio de Janeiro, at the start of the twentieth century, which was intended to transform the city into a modern and global capital. This project of urban transformation was modeled on Haussmann’s Parisian reforms. Analyzing early actuality films, the chapter examines how the foreign medium’s arrival was inscribed and implicated in Rio’s modern transformation, helping to map and project its new image as a modern urban capital.

The notion —clearly inspired by Lefebvre— according to which public works have per se a coercive character that curtails the inhabitants’ right to the city, should not be applied when evaluating certain infrastructures which actually improve the livability of the urban space, such as those promoting urban cycling. Considering this possible error, it is necessary to examine the repeated exceptions that Lefebvre himself enunciates throughout his work when he characterizes some types of urban intervention that, when fulfilling certain conditions, contribute to the resignification and reappropiation of urban space. We here pursue not only to enumerate these notes by Lefebvre, but to illustrate them taking as a model an urban intervention of great repercussion such as the infrastructure for the promotion of urban cycling in the city of Seville in the first decade of the 21st century, and applying such Lefebvrian contributions to its characteristics. In the confrontation of the different space-producing strategies, some infrastructures —such as the one addressed in this case study— guarantee the right to the city, instead of being, as could be argued from a superficial reading of Lefebvre’s analysis, an element that restricts that right.

Corpo. This paper proposes a reflection on the social relations in public spaces established in that city between blind people and other people moving through the streets of neighborhoods like the city center, Copacabana or Urca. Addressing the displacements and the social relations established along the route, the article seeks to trace the urban and spatial impressions of blind people and the flow of their itineraries. How the blinds build their paths and how they spatially occupy the city? What is their use of public transport? What are the elected scenarios, frequented neighborhoods and the difficulties they find in their way? By questioning the representations of urban scenes by blind people, the factors that promote and factors that restrict their mobility, we also seeks to destabilize an understanding of urban space focused on vision. We try to incorporate in the description of places their experienced aspects and the elements, materiality and non-visual signals that enable their apprehension. Keywords: Blindness. Body. Introduction: Rio de Janeiro is the second-largest city in Brazil, with strong socio-spatial segregation, and diverse and heterogeneous land use, occupation, and landscapes. The complexity of dengue requires the construction of surveillance and control tools that take into account the historical, social, economic, and environmental processes mediated in the territory as a central axis of public policy. In this context, this study aimed to stratify the city into areas of receptivity to dengue, using innovative “territorial indicators” because they are built based on the actual occupation of the territory. Methods: We designed and constructed 17 indicators that sought to characterize the transformed and inhabited space according to receptivity to dengue. We used data on land use and occupation, connectivity, climate, and landscape. We developed the dengue receptivity through principal component analysis (PCA), using multiple criteria analysis and map algebra integrated in a GIS platform. Results: The most receptive areas were concentrated in the transition between the north and west zones of the city, a region of unconsolidated urban sprawl. The areas of greatest receptivity had the highest incidence and density of Aedes eggs during the study period. The correlation between receptivity index and incidence rate was positive in the epidemic years. Conclusion: The proposed set of indicators was able to identify areas of greater receptivity, such as regions of disorderly urban sprawl, with a concentration of social and environmental processes that are related to the occurrence of dengue outbreaks and high vector density. On the other hand, population immunity plays an important role in the spatial distribution of dengue during non-epidemic years.

The perception process of marginalized places in urban environments: the case study of the Parolin slum in Curitiba (PR) Abstract The article deals with the question of marginalized places in urban environments under a humanistic perspective in geography, making use of theoretical and methodological underpinnings from phenomenology to acess space. This reading of the urban space aims at identifying man’s cultural, social and emotional values consolidated by experience and existence. Under this perspective, we have investigated the perception process of space as a lived space in order to understand the world experienced by the residents of this marginalized community from an interdisciplinary point of view, instigating urban planners towards a deeper reflection and a maturation of their own concepts when confronted with the difficulties and failures in the processes of urban intervention in irregular occupations.
