Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic has forced an immediate implementation of online learning. However, little is known about its effectiveness and challenges faced by the students. Thus, this study is aimed at examining the effectiveness of online learning and the challenges that it presents to pupils’ abilities to learn. This study employed a case study design using a survey questionnaire, administered to 99 students from a secondary school in Jasin, Melaka. Data were analysed descriptively (calculation of percentage and frequency). Generally, the findings indicated that the students have computers or smartphones and an internet connection at home. Besides, it was found that that the ability and comfortability to use computers was high (>93%). However, their motivation in online learning was low (41.5%) and ability to work in a group was at a moderate level (66.7%). They also agreed that conventional teaching (face-to-face) was important for their learning (98%). These findings are valuable for the government, school administrators, teachers and parents to acknowledge the importance of well-equipped facilities and a stable internet connection for effective learning. However, it is recommended for future researchers to utilize a larger sample size and students from various backgrounds to better understand this issue.   Keywords: COVID-19; online learning; students’ challenges; remote learning.

In 2020 the Covid-19 pandemic has become a global problem and has an impact on all aspects of life, including education. The learning process in all educational institutions, both formal and non-formal, was affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. One of the educational institutions affected by this pandemic is the Al-Qur'an Education Park (TPQ). The Covid-19 pandemic made the government try to suppress the spread of Covid-19, with that the government issued a policy to all educational institutions to close, then switched to Distance Learning (PJJ) and Learning From Home (BDR). Many of the educational institutions carry out an online learning process (online), but not all levels of society are able to adapt to the online learning process, especially those in rural areas. So this research aims to obtain information about the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the learning process at TPQ. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study method. In this study, 5 respondents were selected, namely TPQ teachers in Kutelintang Village, Blangkejeren District, Gayo Lues Regency. There is a wide variety of universities, university campuses and university courses in Australia available to those interested in pursuing a higher education degree. This paper examines the impact of increasing competition for entrance to university on the educational outcomes for students from the government school sector. Using Melbourne as a case study, the research shows that, over a four-year period of increased competition, entry to some of the more academically accessible university campuses in the city became more difficult and this disproportionately affected the opportunities for university entrance among some groups. Despite the fact that there was no noticeable change in the academic standards achieved by government school completers, the rate at which government school students gained access to these universities declined noticeably during this time. These findings show how changes in supply of university places from year to year can have a profound effect on the opportunities of secondary-school completers—particularly those in more educationally disadvantaged settings.

The implementation of educational policies that previously used to be face-to-face between teachers and students became online or online using a laptop/computer/gadjet device and a zoom application, which resulted in a significant change in the way of learning. Schools in remote villages or mountains which of course still have limited internet access/reach can be one of the reasons for the lack of smooth online learning, besides the ability to capture, concentrate or focus students is very different when getting material online or online offline or face-to face. direct. The purpose of the campus teaching activities of Universitas Brawijaya is to provide alternative solutions to online learning problems using counseling, training and direct practice of making animated videos. Campus teaching activities succeeded in providing learning motivation for elementary school students to have dreams of reaching higher education levels, being able to provide insight into the spirit of nationalism loving the homeland from an early age, being able to provide insight into the importance of saving for the future and being able to provide an understanding of nutritious food needed for daily needs. intelligence development. In addition, this activity succeeded in providing insight and knowledge to teachers, especially in the use of Google Classroom and animated videos. These two basic skills can help the online learning process and reduce the potential for learning loss during a pandemic. The synergy of the role of the government, universities and school partners is needed to succeed in the mandate of the law in the intellectual life of the nation.

This qualitative case study explores the factors behind Tahfiz secondary school students’ motivation to undertake the challenging task of memorizing the Qur’an and the challenges they experienced. The participants were six (6) Tahfiz students (three boys and three girls), aged between 15 and 17, who were enrolled in the Tahfiz Al-Qur’an program in two public secondary schools in Gombak and Bangi. The participants were selected by their teachers through purposeful sampling and had been engaged in Qur’an memorization for at least 2 years at the onset of the study.  In-depth, semi-structured one-on-one interviews were conducted to examine their views about the factors that motivated them to memorize the Qur’an and the difficulties they faced. The findings pointed to three distinct categories of motivating factors: the students themselves, teachers and parents. In particular, parental guidance and advice were the most influential elements in students’ motivation to memorize the Qur’an. Among the challenges faced were time constraint, inability to remember verses, strict disciplinary rules and external noise that made the memorizing task difficult. In general, this study has shown the instrumental role of motivation in influencing Tahfiz students' memorization of the Qur’an.
