 The aim of the present research is to study the effect of cadmium addition on microstructure and wear behavior of the alloy (Al-12%Si) under dry sliding conditions. Wear behavior was studied by using the Pin-On- Disc technique under different conditions at applied loads 5-20 N, at constant sliding speed and in constant time. The steel disc hardness was 35HRc. All alloys were prepared with different percentages of cadmium (1.0, 2.0, 3.0) wt%. Also the base alloy was prepared by melting and pouring the molten metal in a metallic mold. It was found that the cadmium addition to Al-Si matrix decreases the wear rate and improves the wear properties for alloys containing -Cd under loads above 10N. It was also found that the alloy Al-12%Si containing 3%Cd is the best alloy in wear resistance and friction coefficient. This is due to presence of the Cd-phase as cuboids or hard particles distributed in a eutectic matrix which reduces the friction coefficient at high loads (20N).

Dry sliding wear and immersion corrosion behaviors of Al 5083-based hybrid composite reinforced with multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT), Molybdenum boride (MoB) and nickel (Ni) are studied with different weight percentages. The reinforcement weight percentages of MWCNT ranges from 0 to 1.5, that of MoB from 1 to 4 and for Ni from 2 to 8. Dry sliding wear behavior at room temperature is studied using Pin on Disc by varying the sliding distances from 500 to 2000m, load from 10 to 40 N and sliding velocity from 0.25 to 1.75m/s. The wear studies revealed that there is a considerable decrease in wear rate for composites than the alloy material with increase in %wt of reinforcements for all test parameters. The worn surface analysis revealed that there are two types of wear mechanisms namely abrasive and adhesive. The uniform immersion corrosion tests also showed decreasing rate with increase in reinforcements.

In order to reduce friction coefficient of the Ni-base alloy coating and further improve its wear resistance, the graphite/TiC/Ni-base alloy composite coating was prepared on the surface of 45 carbon steel by plasma spray. Effects of loads, friction counterparts and lubricants on tribological properties of the coating were investigated. The results show that friction coefficient of the composite coating is reduced by 33% than that of the Ni-base alloy coating when worn against GCr15. Wear losses of the composite coating are less than those of the Ni-base alloy coating at all loads of 6N, 8N, 10N and 12N. Worn against Si3N4, friction coefficient of the composite coating is 13% less than that worn against GCr15, but its wear loss is 2.9 times of that worn against GCr15. Wear mechanism of the composite coating is micro cutting and brittle fraction when worn against Si3N4. Under lubrication of NaCl solution, friction coefficient of the composite coating is almost the same as that under dry sliding, wear loss is increased by 1.6 times. Stress corrosion and wedging effects of the NaCl solution are main wear mechanisms of the composite coating.

A wear resistant TiC-Cr7C3/Fe surface composite was produced by cast technique and in-situ synthesis technique. The microstructure and dry-sliding wear behavior of the surface composite was investigated using scanning electron microscope(SEM), X-ray diffraction(XRD) and MM-200 wear test machine. The results show that the surface composite consists of TiC and Cr7C3as the reinforcing phase, α-Fe and γ-Fe as the matrix. The surface composite has excellent wear-resistance under dry-sliding wear test condition with heavy loads.

The effects of the primary Si phase and applied load on the dry sliding wear behaviors of hypereutectic Al-20Si alloy were investigated. The results show that coarse polygonal and star-like primary Si was refined into fine blocky shape by increasing superheat treatment temperature. The friction coefficient and wear rate significantly decrease after decreasing the size and changing the morphology of primary Si. Moreover, the friction coefficient and wear rate increase with the increase of applied load. Therefore, the wear properties are greatly influenced by the parameters like morphology and size of primary Si as well as applied load.

The in situ method of making zinc-aluminum composites wherein TiC has been introduced has been investigated in the present paper for its microstructural, physical, and dry sliding wear behavior and compared with the base alloy. In the present study, ZA-27 alloy reinforced with 5 and 10 vol % TiC was taken into consideration. The results indicate that the wear rate and coefficient of friction of composites were lower than that of base alloy. The material loss in terms of both wear volume loss and wear rate increases with increase in load and sliding distance, respectively, while coefficient of friction follows a reverse trend with increase in load. Better performance was obtained for 5% TiC reinforcement than with 10% probably due to agglomeration of particles resulting in nonuniform dispersion. Worn surfaces were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis.

The effect of tempering temperature and microstructure on dry sliding wear behavior of quenched and tempered PM steels was investigated. For this purpose, atomized iron powder was mixed with 0.3 % graphite and 1-2 % Ni powders. The mixed powders were cold pressed and sintered at 1200°C. The sintered specimens were quenched from 890°C and then tempered at 200°C and 600°C for 1 hr. Wear tests were carried out on the quenched+tempered specimens under dry sliding wear conditions using a pin-on-disk type machine at constant load and speed. The experimental results showed that the wear coefficient effectively increased with increasing tempering temperature. With increasing Ni content, the wear coefficient slightly decreased at all tempering temperatures due to the high amount of Ni-rich austenitic areas.

In present paper, the dry sliding wear behaviors of wrought Al-12.7Si-0.7Mg alloy have been investigated using a pin-on-disc machine. The effect of various parameters, such as alloy conditions, sliding speed, and normal pressure, has been investigated. Wear surface was characterized by SEM/EDX microanalysis. The microstructure, hardness and tensile properties of the extruded profile were investigated with the aim of understanding the wear and friction mechanisms. The present results reveal an improvement in the mechanical and tribological properties, obtained due to microstructure characterized by fine Si particles uniformly distributed in the Al matrix of fine equiaxed grains, as promoted by hot extrusion. It was also revealed that higher hardness and the lower aspect ratio of eutectic Si particles contributed to the better wear resistance.

In this paper, aluminium metal matrix composites were synthesized through in situ process in which aluminium alloy 5052 (AA5052) and titanium carbide were used as matrix and reinforcement materials, respectively. The microstructural characterization and formation of stable TiC phases were analyzed with the help of field emission scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction analysis, respectively. The 9% TiC-reinforced MMCs had shown a considerable improvement, i.e. 32% increase in hardness, 78% in ultimate tensile strength and 116% increase in yield strength when compared with the base alloy. The tensile fracture of the specimens shows dimples, voids, cracks, and ridges indicating the brittle nature. Further, the dry sliding wear properties of the composites were studied with the help of a pin-on-disc wear testing machine. The composite with 9% TiC exhibited a decrease in volumetric wear loss by 24% when compared with the base alloy at a load of 30 N. With increase in the TiC content and applied load, the COF values decreased linearly for the composites. The 9% TiC-reinforced composites show an abrasive mode of wear mechanism as a result of formation of deep grooves with no plastic deformation. With the improvement obtained in the wear properties, this metal matrix composite can be considered as a replacement for the conventional brake disc material used in the automobile industry.

AbstractIn the present study, aluminium metal matrix composites (AMMC’s) reinforced with boron carbide (B4C) and graphite (Gr) particles were prepared by stir casting method. Dry sliding wear behavior of developed composites was conducted on pin on disc apparatus with variation in sliding distance, applied load and sliding speed. Taguchi method was employed to optimize the data in a controlled way. Analysis of variance was employed to examine the wear behavior of base alloy (Al2219), mono (Al/B4C) and hybrid (Al/B4C/Gr) metal matrix composites. The correlations were established by linear regression models and validated using confirmation tests. The obtained results indicated that B4C content, sliding distance is highly affected by the dry sliding wear followed by sliding speed and applied load. The incorporation of B4C and Gr particles in aluminium improves the tribological characteristics. The SEM images of mono composite shows the deep grooves on worn surface. It demonstrates the signs of abrasive wear of mono composite. The hybrid composite exhibits excellent wear resistance when compared to mono composite and base alloy. The main reason of that is the Gr particles act as a solid lubricating material in the hybrid composite (Al/B4C/Gr).

AbstractThis study focused on the dry sliding wear behavior of the natural fiber called borassus fruit fiber (Palmyra fruit fiber) reinforced polyester composite. Composites are molded with different fiber weight fractions. Composites are fabricated by using both the untreated and the mercerized fibers. Mercerizations of the fibers are done with 1 N solution. The structural properties like tensile, flexural, and impact strengths are experimented as per ASTM and reported. The dry sliding wear study was done using the Pin-on-Disc apparatus as per ASTM G99. In particular, more emphasis has been devoted for wear behaviors at different velocity conditions and loads. Based on the experimental data, the optimum sliding velocity and the corresponding load were suggested.
