STUDENTS’ INTEREST IN LEARNING ENGLISH THROUGH BELAJAR BAHASA INGGRIS WITH ACO APPLICATION

Purpose of the study: This study was aimed at investigating the students’ attitudes and perception toward the use of Duolingo in Learning English Methodology: A mixed-method design (quantitative-qualitative) was employed in this study. 60 undergraduate students of Syiah Kuala University participated in this study. They were chosen by using purposive sampling techniques. In obtaining the data, questionnaires and interviews were implemented in this study. In the question area, there were 16 close-ended questions adapted from Yang (2012a) and Garcia Botero and Questier (2016) designed using the Likert scale method. Besides, 3 interview questions were asked to 10 chosen students to deeply reveal their perception in using the Duolingo. Main Findings: The result indicated that most students have a positive perception of the use of Duolingo in learning English (Mean=4.0). This study has found that students view Duolingo as a useful and helpful application and a motivational tool in learning English. One of the more significant findings to emerge from this study is the inconsistency between the students’ perception and their acts in using the application. Their positive view on the use of Duolingo was contrary to the fact that they are lacking time in using the application. Applications of this study: This study is intended to shed some lights on how the students perceive their experiences in learning English after using the Duolingo as a part of their out of class engagement. Novelty/Originality of this study: The students’ motivation to learn English outside of the classroom can be enhanced through the use of the Duolingo in mobile phones.

The study critically analyses how the local people in Ga West municipality perceive local participation and socio-cultural factors that influence local participation. The study used the mixed method design. The lottery method of the simple random sampling technique coupled with Neuman and Neuman’s (2006) recommendation on random convenience sampling were used to sample and collect data from 187 respondents. The study revealed that local participation provides the local people employment avenues. It was revealed that developmental projects brought to their communities do not allow the local people to be involved at the planning and implementation phases. The study further revealed that women were of the opinion that projects brought to them were not feminine enough and did not build their capacity. Education, social cohesion, peace and stability were among some of the sociocultural factors that influence participation. The study again recommended that every community member should participate, regardless of their gender, ethnic group or socio-cultural differences.

The objectives of the research were (1) to describe the students satisfaction on bilingual program at secondary school in Makassar and (2) to find out the students’ interest and motivation in learning English through Bilingual Program. The researcher applied mixed method namely triangulation mixed method design (QUAN-QUAL). The population of this research was the students of SMPN 12 Makassar in academic year 2015/2016. This research used purposive sampling. The sample of this research consisted of 40 students; 20 students from seventh grade and 20 students eight grade. In this research also, the researcher took 40 parents and 10 teachers as a sample. The research data were collected by questionnaire which was analyzed by descriptive statistic through SPSS version 16 for windows program. The result of data analysis shown that bilingual program improve English students skills, bilingual program makes the students mastery in English and learn it in their subjects matter (Mathematics, Science, and English). Bilingual also makes the students have better skills in learning English and, bilingual program has helped the students to develop as a person (students’ personality). The implementation of bilingual program at secondary school make the students are interested and motivated in learning English. From this fact, it points out the way of school and the governments to keep this program and make a policy to make this program keep going

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether using Reader’s Theatre starategy could improve students’ comprehension level or not and exore students’ perception about the imlementation of Reader’s Theatre in learning English poetry. A total of eight participants from the same program in Kolej University Islam Perlis (KUIPs), Perlis were involved in the research. This study used Embedded Mixed Method in which preexperimental research was conducted in the quantitative stage of data collection, where the quantitative data were gained from students’ pre-test and posttest. Meanwhile the qulitative data were gained from the interview conducted at the end of experimental study. The data collected from the results of students’ pretest and posttest were analyzed by using paired samle T-Test, while thematic analysis was used to analyse the responses from interviews. The results of the analysis showed that 1) Reader’s Theatre strategy was able to enhance students’ comprehension level and 2) students showed positive perception that the learning activities with the implementation of Reader’s Theatre strategy brought three benefits; first, the activity was interesting and enjoyable, secondly, the activity made it easy to comprehend English literatures and thirdly, the activity made students work collaborativey in groups.

Bahasa Indonesia:Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui perspektif mahasiswa dengan latar jurusan keislaman terhadap pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Dua pertanyaan yang dikemukakan, yakni: 1) Apa perspektif mahasiswa dengan latar jurusan keislaman di UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya tentang pentingnya belajar Bahasa Inggris?, 2) Apakah pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris yang dilakukan di UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya dapat membantu mahasiswa dengan latar jurusan keislaman untuk memahami disiplin keilmuan terkait? Mixed method dipilih sebagai metode untuk melakukan pengumpulan dan analisis data. Dalam pertanyaan pertama, bentuk survey dipilih sebagai metode penelitian, dengan instrumen berupa angket. Angket yang digunakan berisi sepuluh pertanyaan yang disebarkan kepada 100 orang mahasiswa. Untuk pertanyaan kedua, pendekatan kualitatif dirasa cocok dan dipilih sebagai metode untuk memperoleh jawaban. Wawancara digunakan sebagai tehnik pengumpulan data dan melibatkan 25 mahasiswa sebagai informan. Pada akhirnya, ditemukan bahwa mahasiswa berlatar jurusan keislaman memiliki persepsi positif terkait dengan pentingnya mempelajari Bahasa Inggris. Selain itu, hasil penelitian juga menunjukkan bahwasannya proses pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris di UIN Sunan Ampel oleh sebagian besar informan dianggap belum berjalan efektif dan tidak memberikan banyak kontribusi dalam upaya meningkatkan kemampuan Bahasa Inggris dan menghubungkannya dengan disiplin keilmuan terkait. Dengan demikian, persepsi positif mahasiswa tentang pentingnya mempelajari Bahasa Inggris belum difasilitasi dengan cukup baik oleh pembelajaran yang berlangsung. English:This research’s goal is to know the perspective of Islamic studies students towards English learning process. For reaching this goal, there are two research questions: 1) what is the perspective of Islamic studies students towards English learning process in State Islamic University of Sunan Ampel Surabaya? 2) how does English learning process help Islamic studies students in State Islamic University of Sunan Ampel Surabaya to enrich their field study knowledge?. Mixed method was chosen as the method to collect and analysis the data. To answers the first research question, survey was used as research method, and questioner was used as instrument. There were 10 statements in the questioners that were given to 100 participants. Meanwhile, to answer the second research question, qualitative approach was chosen as method to gain answer. Interview was used as data collecting technique that involved 25 participants as informant. Finally, it was found that Islamic studies students had positive perception dealing with the importance of learning English. The result also showed that English learning process on most of students’ perspective had not been effective and it did not give much contribution in increasing students’ English ability which deals with their disciplines. In conclusion, positive perception of students about the importance of learning English was not facilitated enough by learning process.

Descriptive Statistical Analysis

This study aimed to explore the teachers’ perceptions about principals’ instructional leadership practices in the schools. A total of 202 teachers working in 30 schools in Bhutan were involved as the research sample. The researcher used mixed method design to explore the study. The survey structured questionnaire and semi-structured interview tools were administered to collect data from the sample group. As for the data analysis, the findings were analyzed using descriptive statistical analysis and thematic analysis. The findings of the study indicated that teachers tend to develop positive perception toward their principals’ instructional leadership practices in the schools. Further analysis of teachers’ perception in relation to their demographic and institutional factor indicated insignificant leadership practices.

The objective of the research was to find out the correlation between the students intelligence and their achievement in learning English at SMPN 27 Makassar. The design of this research was descriptive and employed correlational method. The population of this research was the second year students of SMPN 27 Makassar. The technique of sampling applied cluster random sampling which the total of sample was 20 students. The instruments of this research were IQ test and English test. To find out students achievement in learning English, the researcher tested the students using multiple choice test that consisted of materials from their handbook. To find out the level of students intelligence, the Psychological Department Team of State University of Makassar was given IQ test. To find out the correlation from both variables, the researcher used Pearson r formula. The result of the test shows that most of the students’ intelligence was categorized as dull average and the students’ achievement was 6.35 which is categorized as fair achievement. The result data found that there was no significant correlation between the students’ intelligence level and their achievement in learning English at the second year of SMPN 27 Makassar.

Slameto (2003) explains that one of the factors that influence learning achievement is a relation peers or position of the student relationship with friends around. The position of the student relationship with a friend in the class can be described by Sociometrics Status. Sociometric status means a reflection of the general acceptance of individuals by peers (Finch, 1998) The purpose of this study was to determine differences in learning achievement in terms of sociometric status in SMPN 1 Bangli.This research is a mixed-method. The sampling technique used was cluster random sampling. Subjects in this study amounted to 189 students who attend school at SMPN 1 Bangli. Data mining techniques used in this study begins with interviews and the interviews made in the questionnaire and subsequent sociometric status sociometric status questionnaire distributed to the study subjects. Data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test. Based on the results of data analysis, showed that there is a significant difference in learning achievement in terms of sociometric status in SMPN 1 Bangli. If students want to get high academic achievement, the students can improve their relationships with friends around.Keyword: Learning Achievement, Sociometric Status.

This study aimed to examine the effect of member income, length of membership, education level, and distance of residence on member participation of Koperasi Karya Utama Nusantara (Kopkun). Respondents were selected using cluster random sampling. Data were analyzed using multiple regression. This study used a mixed method (quantitative and qualitative approaches). The results indicated that member income, length of membership, and education level had a significant effect on member participation, while the distance of residence did not have an effect on the member participation. The results indicated that in order to increase member participation, Kopkun should improve its services such as providing more items, giving bonuses or benefits to members, providing education about cooperative and involving old and new members in making decisions and policies.
