Abstract This paper studies the transactional distance between the students and the tutor as well as the autonomy of students in a postgraduate course of the Hellenic Open University (HOU). The aim of the paper is to examine how the relation between autonomy and transactional distance evolves during an academic year and how this relation is affected by demographic parameters, such as gender, age group and student experience (year of studies). For this purpose an empirical research was conducted and a sample of postgraduate students responded to a questionnaire (which included a scale for transactional distance, a scale for autonomy and demographic questions) during two different time periods within an academic (2012-2013). The results of the statistical analysis showed that during the evolution of the learning process there was a small change in transactional distance, especially for the dimension of co-understanding, while there was also a change in one of the dimensions of autonomy, namely sensitivity to others. However, no relation was observed between transactional distance and autonomy, ether in the first or the second measurement during the academic year. This finding is also regarded in the overall framework of the different critiques and interpretations of Moore’s theory.

The urgency of the research problem is due to the need to find new opportunities for computer-based testing, especially in the current context of the COVID-19 pandemic, when most higher education institutions operate in a distance learning environment. The aim of the article is to study the impact of retesting on the performance of students and postgraduate students on the example of studying some pedagogical disciplines in a classical university. The author used the following research methods: theoretical - in order to understand the features of computer-based testing of students in high school, formulating the conclusions of the study, etc. (analysis and synthesis, comparison, generalization, etc.); empirical – to develop didactic tests and identify indicators of initial and re-testing of students and postgraduate students (online survey, pedagogical observation); mathematical – to process the results using the computer program IBM SPSS Statistics 23. The author obtained the following specific results: according to an online survey of 1211 respondents (during 2020), almost 67% of undergraduate students, 70% of undergraduates and 83% of university students study in Moodle most disciplines during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Moodle system is most prevalent in distance learning during the COVID-19 pandemic at the university. The coefficients of internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha) of the developed tests are equal to 0,80-0,94 for different disciplines. Students and postgraduate students took the mandatory first test at Moodle, and they also had the opportunity to retake the test of their choice. Retesting helps to improve the performance of students and postgraduate students. The average increase in test score (%) between the test and re-test was in the range of 2 -16 for various disciplines (2-14 for bachelor’s students, 11-16 for master’s students, 3-5 for postgraduate students).

Since April 2020 The Ministry of Education stated the “Learning from Home” policy, that’s why The research was conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic in the academic year of 2020-2019 starting in April 2021. Where learning is learning process have been held virtually with the support of internet and some communication and computer-based device. As a matter of fact, distance learning is not as simple as it should be. So the purpose of this research is to improve grammar skills through interactive learning media so that it is interesting and does not make students bored while following the distance learning. Therefore, the authors conducted research by knowing the use of learning media based on Kahoot as an effort to improve students' English grammar skills. The research method applied is the Classroom Action Research Method which goes through 2 cycles with the final results showing that the use of kahoot as an alternative learning media is very effective in growing up the enthusiasm of students to attend lectures so that it has an impact on improving students' English grammar skills with the finding of the average score of students with The number of  70 in the first cycle and 80 as the average value in the second cycle, these results significantly increased from the average score of 60 before the implementation of kahoot as learning media.

This research study examines the attitudes of Portuguese higher education students regarding compulsory digital and distance learning university courses during the second semester of the academic year 2019–2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. The methodology was quantitative, being the undergraduate and postgraduate students surveyed to find their perceptions about distance and online education in Portugal. The findings of the study highlighted the relationship between distance and online learning. The key concern of the respondents is related to the formal and contextual dimensions of the online class regime. The values examined, taken as a whole, allow us to conclude that with this teaching regime, in terms of awareness, there is acceptance and benefit. The sense of ambiguity in which this transformation took place, as well as the climate surrounding this phase, are worth noting. The teaching and evaluation methodologies used have been embraced and show a very wide range of choices on the part of the teaching teams and the students’ various interests, just as in the teaching regime of the classroom. The fact that students feel the need for face-to-face classes, however, is of great importance for practical and laboratory classes. This reality, which is a challenge to face in the future, is hard to overcome.

Purpose Wawasan Open University Library undertook a survey study, based on the Wilson’s revised model of information behaviour (1999), to profile information-seeking behaviour of their distance students in using library resources in their research and learning activities. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach Using random sampling method, samples were selected to ensure proper representation of the population across four schools of studies and five regional centres. A total of 550 questionnaires were sent to undergraduate and postgraduate students, and 435 completed questionnaires were returned with a success response rate of 79 per cent. Findings Findings indicated significant differences between undergraduate and postgraduate students in using the university’s MyDigital Library and physical library for their information needs. Findings also indicated significant difference between first-year and post-first-year students in using internet search engines as part of their information-seeking process. Practical implications Students improving on their information-seeking behaviour in the learning and research work paved way for them to better experience university vivacity and not isolate themselves from distance learning. Originality/value This paper acknowledges the importance of promoting good information-seeking behaviour among distance learners in the scholarship of learning and research work. The paper also amplifies the important role library plays in minimizing students’ sense of isolation in university learning experience.

Abstract The Pygmalion Effect is the positive form of self-fulfilling prophecy and shows how teacher expectations influence student performance. According to this phenomenon, higher expectations can lead to an increase in performance. In this research qualitative methodology was adopted both in data collection, and in analysis, in order to investigate the impact of the Pygmalion Effect in distance adult learning. Observation was held in two Contact Sessions of the Postgraduate Module for Open and Distance Education (EKP65) of the School of Humanities at the Hellenic Open University (HOU). Also, 22 interviews were conducted, 6 with Tutors/Advisors and 16 with students of the same Postgraduate Module. The data analysis indicates that both Tutors/Advisors and postgraduate students shape form their expectations based on the behaviour as reflected in their first contact (telephone contact, face-to-face contact, written contact through the CV). Expectations originally are positive, though this could change due to mismatched following behaviour. Tutor’s expectations are expressed in verbal and non-verbal ways both in written and face-to-face communication. However, it is the non-verbal behaviour - and mainly the encouragement and the support towards the students - that influences their positive mood and attitude towards the learning object and distance learning itself. In conclusion, not to reject the educational trend according to which the adult learner has developed selfmotivation, we accept that Tutor’s expectations reflected in encouragement and support towards the student may influence the learning process.
