The purpose was to estimate the relation of attitude toward body elimination in 93 college students (27 men and 66 women), to authoritarian personality features, participants' perception of their mothers' parenting style, and attitudes toward cleanliness, sex, and family nudity. Subjects were administered the Body Elimination Attitude Scale, the Four-item F Scale, the Parental Authority Questionnaire Pertaining to Mothers, and the items “Sex is dirty,” Cleanliness is next to godliness,” and “Children should never see other family members nude.” Larger scores for disgust toward body elimination were associated with authoritarian personality characteristics, being less likely to describe mother's parenting style as authoritative (open communication) and more likely to describe it as authoritarian and lower scores for tolerance for family nudity. Implications for further research were suggested.

Objective This is an empirical study that examined the impact of parenting style, peer relationship on learned helplessness among 120 university students aged 18 to 23 years (M=19.7) from Sunway University, Malaysia. Methodology/Technique A survey was conducted to collect the data. Parental Authority Questionnaire (PAQ) was used to measure parenting style, while the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment (IPPA) was used to measure peer relationship and Helplessness Behaviour Questionnaire (HBQ) was used to measure learned helplessness. Findings Findings of the study revealed no significant relationship between parenting style and learned helplessness behaviour. However, there was a negative and significant relationship between peer relationship and learned helplessness behaviour. The study, therefore revealed the significant effect of peer relationship on learned helplessness among the sample of the study irrespective of gender. Novelty The paper, hence highlighted the importance of peer relationship in the planning of educational curriculum for adolescents. Later studies may examine the effect of other socio-environmental factors on learned helplessness behaviour. This study explored the hypothesis that styles of parental authority are related to insomnia in college students. To do this, I asked a large group of university students ( N = 757) to respond to a questionnaire that included the items of Buri's Parental Authority Questionnaire and the Coren Insomnia Scale. Analysis suggested that more strict and uncompromising discipline engaged in by authoritarian parents was associated with higher insomnia in young adults, while the firm though flexible and warm discipline associated with the authoritative parents was associated with less insomnia. Further, as fathers' permissiveness increased, insomnia decreased, while mothers' permissiveness seemed to be unrelated to insomnia.

There have been many studies on the relationship between parenting style and personality characteristics of college students, and there are many inconsistent conclusions on the direction and intensity of the correlation. In order to explore the relationship between parenting style and personality of college students in China, this systematic review and meta analysis included 12 studies with 4,984 college students. Results showed that: 1) Positive parenting style was significantly negatively correlated with neuroticism and positively correlated with extraversion; 2) Negative parenting style was significantly positively correlated with psychoticism and negatively correlated with neuroticism. Parenting style can significantly influence college students’ personality.

Alexithymia has been linked to reduced emotional awareness and increased aggression. One line of evidence suggests that authoritarian parenting contributes to the development of alexithymia. To elucidate the relationship between experienced parenting style, alexithymia and aggression the Parental Authority Questionnaire, the Toronto Alexithymia Scale and the Buss–Perry Aggression Questionnaire were administered to a group of emerging adults. Current findings show a positive relationship between: (i) authoritarian parenting style and alexithymia, (ii) alexithymia and aggression, iii) authoritarian parenting style and aggression. This study also found that paternal authoritarian parenting predicted alexithymia and aggression when controlling for maternal authoritarian style, but not the other way round. In addition, alexithymia mediated the relationship between paternal authoritarian parenting and aggression when controlling for maternal authoritarian style suggesting that elevated alexithymia which is likely to be a consequence of authoritarian parenting, especially when it is practiced by a father, contributes to increased aggression in adulthood.

Parenting Style among Teenagers with an Internet Addiction Background: Teenagers are transition from childhood to adulthood which is a period of crisis against maladaptive risks, such as internet addiction. One of the external factors that most influences internet addiction in teenagers is parenting style.Purpose: To describe the parenting style among teenagers with an internet addiction.Method: A quantitative descriptive with a cross-sectional approach. The population was all students in grades of X and XI grade senior high school of Jatinangor, and samples were taken by purposive sampling with criteria of experiencing internet addiction, have complete parents, and living with parents with a total sample of 100 students. Data collection by using an instrument of Parental Authority Questionnaire (PAQ) which has translated in bahasa and tested for its validity with coefficient ≤ 0.300, and its reliability with of Alpha Cronbach ≤ 0.700. The results were analyzed by univariate.Results: The research showed that authoritative father’s parenting style perceived by teenagers (38%), authoritative mother’s parenting style perceived by teenagers (43%), authoritarian father’s parenting style perceived by teenagers (25%), authoritarian mother’s parenting style perceived by teenagers (28%), permissive father’s parenting style perceived by teenagers (28%), and permissive mother’s parenting style perceived by teenagers (16%).Conclusion: Most of the parenting styles perceived by adolescents with internet addiction are democratic maternal. Keywords: Internet addiction; Parent style; Teenagers. Pendahuluan: Masa remaja merupakan masa transisi dari anak-anak menuju  dewasa yang merupakan masa krisis terhadap risiko maladaptif, seperti kecanduan internet. Salah satu faktor eksternal yang paling mempengaruhi kecanduan internet pada remaja ialah pola asuh..Tujuan: Mengetahui gambaran pola asuh orang tua pada remaja dengan kecanduan internet.Metode: Penelitian deskriptif-kuantitatif dengan pendekatan cross sectional. Populasi pada penelitian ini ialah seluruh siswa kelas X dan XI SMA Negeri Jatinangor, sebanyak 838 siswa. Teknik pengambilan sampel adalah purposive sampling dengan kriteria inklusi mengalami kecanduan internet, orang tua lengkap dan tinggal bersama orang tua dengan jumlah sampel sebanyak 100 siswa. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan menggunakan Instrumen Parental Authority Questionnaire (PAQ) yang telah dialih bahasakan dan diuji validitasnya dengan nilai koefisien ≤ 0.300, serta reliabilitasnya dengan nilai Alpha Cronbach≤ 0.700. Hasil penelitian dianalisis  dengan teknik analisis univariat.Hasil: Hasil penelitian menunjukkan pola asuh ayah demokratis yang dipersepsikan remaja (38%), pola asuh ibu demokratis yang dipersepsikan remaja (43%), pola asuh ayah otoriter yang dipersepsikan remaja (25%), pola asuh ibu otoriter yang dipersepsikan remaja (28%), pola asuh ayah permisif yang dipersepsikan remaja (28%), dan pola asuh ibu permisif yang dipersepsikan remaja (16%).Simpulan: Sebagian besar pola asuh yang dipersepsikan remaja dengan kecanduan internet adalah pola asuh ibu demokratis.

Parenting style affects self-regulation in school pupils, yet its long-term influence on academic behavior is rarely studied. A pilot study was conducted on 83 teacher college students, who filled in a questionnaire measuring recollections of parenting styles (Parental Authority Questionnaire [PAQ]) and self-regulation in learning (Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire [MSLQ]). Unlike in results known about adolescents, authoritative parenting was not significantly associated with students’ present self-regulation skills, except for human resources. Authoritarian parenting was the only parenting style correlated with motivation, self-efficacy, and cognitive strategies and strongly correlated with critical thinking. These results suggest new ways of evaluating the relationship of authoritarian parenting with academic skills.

The motives, family experiences, and personality characteristics of 341 college students with and without tattoos or piercings were studied. Participants completed Lippa's 1991 measures of the Big Five personality factors, a shortened version of the Body Cathexis Scale, a series of questions about their childhood experiences, and questions about risk-taking behaviors. In addition, reasons to have or not have body modifications and the perceptions of people with body modifications were investigated. Of the 116 men and 186 women, 25% and 33%, respectively, had at least one tattoo or body piercing. There were very few differences in the childhood experiences or personality characteristics of people with or without body modifications. Although people with body modifications did not differ from people without modifications on the Big Five personality measures, people without modifications perceived people with modifications as much different from themselves on these measures. These results indicate that tattoos and piercings in college students are associated with significantly more risk-taking behavior, greater use of alcohol and marijuana, and less social conformity. However, the traditional stereotype that body modifications are indicators of social or personal pathology does not describe contemporary college students.
