AbstractWeaning is a stressful period for the piglets and the sow. Stress during weaning is related to the change of diet which can affect the physiology of the gastrointestinal tract, as well as the microbial and immunological status of the animals. In the experiment a yeast-whey preparation was used to decrease the transient growth depression related to reduction of feed intake by the piglets. The piglets were assigned to three treatments. In the control group (I) the animals obtained standard feed mixture used routinely at the farm. In the case of piglets from II and III treatment, the yeast-whey preparation was added in the quantity of 4 and 7%, respectively.Application of 7% yeast-whey preparation to the diet significantly increased the body weight of piglets (p<0.05) and in consequence the average daily body weight gain (p<0.01) in comparison with the control group of animals. Additionally, piglets which were fed the yeast-whey preparation diet had a higher feed intake (p<0.05) and better feed conversion ratio (p<0.05) than those fed a diet without the addition of this preparation. No significant differences were stated for most biological parameters (p>0.05), except for the blood urea level, which was significantly lower (p<0.05) in the treatments where the yeast-whey preparation was used. These results indicated that yeast-whey preparation efficiently suppressed post-weaning diarrhea and improved the performance of the animals.

The effect of phytase and inorganic Zn supplementation was studied in 180 male White Pekin ducks (WPD) from 1 to 56 days of age. The birds were divided into four groups fed the same basal diet (containing 26 ppm of Zn from raw materials): the control group did not receive Zn supplementation; the second group was supplemented with 30 ppm of Zn oxide; and the third and fourth groups were fed the control and the 30 ppm diets, respectively, both supplemented with 500 U of E. coli phytase. Each group contained five replicates of nine ducks. The body weight and feed intake were recorded at 1, 28 and 56 days of age. At 56 days of age, five birds/group were used to measure feed digestibility and five other birds/group were slaughtered. Zn at 30 ppm increased the body weight gain (BWG, p < 0.01) and feed intake (p < 0.05) and improved the feed conversion (FCR, p < 0.05) of the growing ducks. The Zn retention and Zn level in the excreta increased (p < 0.01) due to Zn supplementation. The addition of phytase improved BWG (p < 0.01) and FCR (p < 0.05) of growing ducks. The use of phytase reduced (p < 0.01) the level of Zn in duck excreta. Phytase supplementation to the basal diet at 30 ppm seems to be adequate to meet Zn requirements for ducks without further Zn additions.

A trial was conducted with 32 indigenous goat kids (Capra prisca) 8,5 weeks old to examine the effectiveness of dietary avoparcin as growth promoting factor. The kids were randomly allocated into two groups (control- and avoparcin group with initial mean body weight of 11,61 ±1,16 kg and 11,57±1,47 kg, respectively) comprising of 16 kids (8 male and 8 female) each. For a period of 12 weeks, kids in the control group were given lucerne (alfalfa) hay (mean daily consumption 170 g/head) and an appropriate compound diet (given ad libitum), while kids in the avoparcin group were fed the same diet except that the compound diet was supplemented with avoparcin (20 mg/kg). Avoparcin supplementation significantly (P<0.05) improved final mean body weight by 10.57% (19.24 ± 2.33 kg vs. 17.40 ± 2.30 kg), body weight gain (BWG) by 32.30% (7.66 ± 1.42 kg vs. 5.79 ± 1.74 kg), mean daily feed consumption in dry matter basis (DM) by 14.24% (551.80 ± 31.60 g DM vs. 483.02 ± 28.94 g DM), feed conversion ratio by 13.62% (6.09 ± 0.47 kg DM consumption/kg BWG vs. 7.05 ± 0.56 kg DM consumption/kg BWG) and carcass weight by 14.86% (11.44 ± 1.48 kg vs. 9.96 ± 1.76 kg). Moreover, no significant differences (P>0.05) were noticed neither in carcass yield and carcass chemical composition nor in percentages of small intestine-, major omentum-, lung-,heart-, liver- and spleen weight in the body weight.

Considering the inherent attributes of tannia cocoyam (Xanthosoma sagitifolium) its appropriate utilization may enhance performance of starter broiler chicks. This study was therefore carried out to determine the dietary evaluation of starter broiler chicks fed cooked cocoyam tuber meal as energy source in place of maize. The cooked cocoyam tuber meal was used to replace maize at various levels of 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% respectively for diets 2, 3, 4 and 5 to determine the best replacement level that would give optimal performance in starter broiler chicks' diets. Result of the proximate composition of cooked cocoyam tuber meal showed that it contained 13.11% moisture, 2.60% ash, 1.85% ether extract, 3.90% crude protein, 9.45% crude fibre, 70.13% nitrogen free extract and 3004.37 Kcal/kgME. 150 day old Anak broiler chicks were used for the experiment. They were divided into 5 treatment groups of 30 broiler chicks each. Each treatment group was subdivided into 3 replicates of 10 broiler chicks each and kept in deep litter. Each starter diet was fed to a group of 30 starter broilers for 4 weeks using completely randomized design. They were given feed and water adlibitum. Parameters measured include initial body weight, final body weight, body weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion ratio and economics of production. In the starter broiler feeding trial, the starter broilers on 25% cooked cocoyam meal compared favourably with the control (P> 0.05) in terms of feed intake, body weight gain and feed conversion ratio and significantly (P > 0.05) performed between than those on 100% CCYM. The cost of production (N/Kg broiler) was however cheapest for diet 2 (25% CCYM) N395 versus control diet (N494.28). It was therefore concluded that cooked cocoyam tuber meal (Xanthosoma sagitifolium) could be used in the diets of starter broiler chicks' up to 25% without affecting the body weight gain, feed intake and feed conversion ratio as indicated in this study.

The aim of the research was to study the effects of synchronization index in the sugarcane bagasse based complete feed on feed intake, daily body weight gain and feed conversion ratio of sheep. Two permanent cannulated male local sheep was 2 years old to create formulation of three diets with different synchronization index, namely 0.37; 0.50 and 0.63 respectively. Fifteen local male sheep with body weight average of 18,32 kg (cv= 14,39%) and aged at 12 months were feed a complete feed based on bagasse with a level of synchrony index 0,37; 0,50; 0,63 were design isoprotein and isoenergy. The treatments were allotted in a randomized block design with 3 treatments and 5 groups for in-vivo test. The feed intake, daily body weight gain and feed conversion ratio of fifteen rams were determined on week 8 of experimental period. The production of biomass and antibacterial extracellular products by Lactobacillus casei subsp. casei CECT 4043 was followed in both batch and in realkalized fed-batch cultures. Enhanced concentrations of biomass and antibacterial extracellular products were obtained with the use of the latter fermentation technique in comparison with the batch mode. The culture obtained by fed-batch fermentation was mixed with skim milk and used to prepare a probiotic feed for weaned piglets. To test the effect of the potentially probiotic culture of L. casei on body weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion efficiency, and on fecal coliform counts of piglets, two groups of animals received either feed supplemented with the probiotic preparation or avilamycin for 28 days. The control group was fed nonsupplemented feed. At the end of the administration period (day 28), the groups receiving probiotic and avilamycin exhibited the highest average body weight gain values, although the mean feed intake and feed conversion efficiency values were not different among the groups (P &gt; 0.05). For the entire experimental period (42 days), the control group exhibited the lowest feed intake value, the probiotic group exhibited the highest feed conversion efficiency value, and the antibiotic group exhibited the highest body weight gain (P &lt; 0.05). Interestingly, no significant difference in body weight gain was observed between the probiotic and the control groups by day 42 (P &gt; 0.05). Fecal coliform values decreased (although not significantly) by day 28 in the three groups. However, the mean counts returned to pretreatment levels by day 42 in all groups.

This study investigated the interaction of insulin and somatotropin on body weight gain and feed conversion in rats. Female rats (initial wt 215 g) were assigned to one of the following four treatments for a 2-wk period: 1) control; 2) 40 U protamine zinc insulin.kg-1.day-1; 3) 2 mg/day somatotropin; 4) insulin + somatotropin. Relative to the control group (gain, 1.4 g/day; intake, 16.7 g/day) insulin stimulated the rate of gain (250%), feed intake (73%), and fat pad weight (215%). Insulin caused a 270% increase in carcass fat and a 30% increase in carcass protein. Somatotropin also increased gain (178%) but did not have a significant effect on intake or fat pad weight. Somatotropin increased carcass protein 28% but had no effect on carcass fat. The greatest stimulation of body weight gain (392%) was observed with the insulin plus somatotropin combination treatment, indicating an additive effect. There were also additive effects on protein accretion and organ weights. However, feed intake and carcass fat in the combination group were intermediate between that of the control and insulin alone groups, indicating that somatotropin attenuated the ability of insulin to stimulate these parameters. These results indicate that certain effects of insulin and somatotropin, such as the promotion of lean tissue accretion, are additive, whereas other effects, such as those associated with lipid metabolism, oppose each other.

The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of using probiotic <em>Yeasture</em>® at different rearing periods on performance, intestinal microbial population and carcass traits in broiler chickens. A total of 378 one day old chickens (male and female) were randomly allotted to one of the 21 floor pens in a completely randomized design with seven treatments and three replicate groups and eighteen chickens in each group (9 male and 9 female). The Experiment treatments consisted of seven groups: A (control, without probiotic), B (prebiotics feeding between 1 to 10 days), C (prebiotics feeding between 1 to 24 days), D (prebiotics feeding between 1 to 42 days), E (prebiotics feeding between 11 to 24 days), F (prebiotics feeding between 11 to 42 days) and G (prebiotics feeding between 24 to 42 days). The chickens received the desired probiotic at different days of rearing period. The basal diets were corn and soybean meal, so 0.3 g/kg of basal diets in starter (1-10 days), 0.25 g/kg of basal diets in grower (11-24 d) and 0.2 g/kg of basal diets in finisher (24-42 d) period of probiotic was added to the basal diets for each other than treatment. The growth performance (evaluated through body weight gain, feed intake and feed conversion ratio), intestinal microbial population (the measurement of <em>Lactobacillus</em> and <em>Coliforms</em>) and carcass traits (relative weights of carcass, intestine, liver, gizzard and abdominal fat) were determined. Body weight gains and feed conversion ratio were significantly improved in broilers with added probiotic compared to the control group (P&lt;0.05) whereas feed intake was not significantly altered. In addition, intestinal microbial population and carcass and gizzard weights markedly increased in the probiotic treated birds compared to control chickens (P&lt;0.05). These results show that diet supplementation with probiotic <em>Yeasture</em>® at the early days of the rearing periods of broiler chickens especially, 1 to 24 and 1 to 42 days, had a positive effect on intestinal microbial population, leading to more nutrients being assimilated by the chickens and consequently greater performance in broiler chickens.

The material of this study included 200 broilers aged 14 days given P0= drinking water treatment without giving an reject milk and P1= drinking water with the addition of rejected milk. Chickens were treated for 14 days and fed with PK= 22.0-23.0%, Fat= 5.0%, Calcium= 0.9%, Phospor= 0.6%, ME= 3050-3150 Kcal/Kg. In conclusion, rejected milk in drinking water has a significant effect on daily body weight gain, but does not significantly effect on feed intake and feed conversion.
