Abstract Dilution is one of many challenges confronting professionals in mining and milling, and is perhaps one of the oldest. Longwall mining is one of the mining methods that is often affected by out-of-seam dilution (OSD). In this method, roof falls play a significant role in increasing OSD in the prop-free front of the face area. Thus, estimating the volume of roof fall can be extremely helpful to assess dilution of the run of mine coal without a sampling process. This paper presents the effect of exposed area geometry on potential roof falls using the 2D numerical modelling program FLAC. In this respect, a half-prolate ellipsoid was considered as the low stress level or plasticity zone under yield tension which roof material fall. Since FLAC software does not show roof falls in prop-free front of the face, a series of two-dimensional numerical models are developed using UDEC software. The comparison of the results of two numerical models clearly indicates that volumes of roof fall obtained by means of these methods are in good agreement with each other.

Filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs) and medical masks are widely used to reduce the inhalation exposure of airborne particulates and biohazardous aerosols. Their protective capacity largely depends on the fraction of these that are filtered from the incoming air volume. While the performance and physics of different filter materials have been the topic of intensive study, less well understood are the effects of mask sealing. To address this, we introduce an approach to calculate the influence of face-seal leakage on filtration ratio and fit factor based on an analytical model and a finite element method (FEM) model, both of which take into account time-dependent human respiration velocities. Using these, we calculate the filtration ratio and fit factor for a range of ventilation resistance values relevant to filter materials, 500–2500 Pa∙s∙m−1, where the filtration ratio and fit factor are calculated as a function of the mask gap dimensions, with good agreement between analytical and numerical models. The results show that the filtration ratio and fit factor are decrease markedly with even small increases in gap area. We also calculate particle filtration rates for N95 FFRs with various ventilation resistances and two commercial FFRs exemplars. Taken together, this work underscores the critical importance of forming a tight seal around the face as a factor in mask performance, where our straightforward analytical model can be readily applied to obtain estimates of mask performance.

Abstract The paper presents the validation procedure of the model used in the analysis of the composite blade for the rotor of the ILX-27 rotorcraft, designed and manufactured in the Institute of Aviation, by means of numerical analyses and tests of composite elements. Numerical analysis using finite element method and experimental studies of three research objects made of basic materials comprising the blade structure – carbon-epoxy laminate, glass-epoxy composite made of roving and foam filler – were carried out. The elements were in the form of four-point bent beams, and for comparison of the results the deflection arrow values in the middle of the beam and axial deformations on the upper and lower surfaces were selected. The procedure allowed to adjust the discrete model to real objects and to verify and correct the material data used in the strength analysis of the designed blade.

In this paper, we proposed an efficient method to address the problem of color face image segmentation that is based on color information and saliency map. This method consists of three stages. At first, skin colored regions is detected using a Bayesian model of the human skin color. Then, we get a chroma chart that shows likelihoods of skin colors. This chroma chart is further segmented into skin region that satisfy the homogeneity property of the human skin. The third stage, visual attention model are employed to localize the face region according to the saliency map while the bottom-up approach utilizes both the intensity and color features maps from the test image. Experimental evaluation on test shows that the proposed method is capable of segmenting the face area quite effectively,at the same time, our methods shows good performance for subjects in both simple and complex backgrounds, as well as varying illumination conditions and skin color variances.

Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) and static relaxation tests are carried out to study the viscoelastic deformation of PC/ABS alloy with blending ratio of PC to ABS being 50/50. A modified approach is developed to calculate the relaxation modulus of PC/ABS alloy from the DMA experimental results of storage and loss moduli. Comparison of the results obtained from DMA and static relaxation tests is presented and good agreement is found.

Clusters of ribosomes observed by electron microscopy in thin sections of rabbit reticulocytes are of the same order of size as the section thickness of 600 A. Many of the observed clusters must therefore have been transected by the section surfaces and observed as clusters containing fewer ribosomes. A probability method of correcting for this effect is given. Comparison of the results with grid observations of ribosome distributions indicates sufficiently good agreement for application to cell section observations.

The development of high-performance aeroengine combustion chambers strongly depends on the accuracy and reliability of efficient numerical models. In the present work, a reacting solver with a steady laminar flamelet model and spray model has been developed in OpenFOAM and the solver details are presented. The solver is firstly validated by Sandia/ETH-Zurich flames. Furthermore, it is used to simulate nonpremixed kerosene/air spray combustion in an aeroengine combustion chamber with the RANS method. A comparison with available experimental data shows good agreement and validates the capability of the new developed solver in OpenFOAM.

This paper presents two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) numerical models for unsteady phased thermal analysis of RCC dams. The time evolution of a thermal field has been modeled using the actual dam shape, RCC technology and the adequate description of material properties. Model calibration and verification has been done based on the field investigations of the Platanovryssi dam, the highest RCC dam in Europe. The results of a long-term thermal analysis, with actual initial and boundary conditions, have shown a good agreement with the observed temperatures. The influence of relevant parameters on the thermal field of RCC dams has been analyzed. It is concluded that the 2D model is appropriate for the thermal phased analysis, and that the boundary conditions and the mixture properties are the most influential on the RCC dam thermal behavior.

This paper presents an analysis of the situation in which a two-wheeler (i.e. a motorcycle, where the term motorcycles includes scooters) falls over to the side and then successively slides; this typically occurs in road accidents involving this type of vehicle. Knowing the deceleration rate of the sliding phase allows the kinetic energy dissipated and the speed of the motorcycle just before the fall to the ground to be calculated. These parameters are very important in the analysis and reconstruction of accidents. The work presented in this paper was developed in two experimental test sessions on fully faired motorcycles which are mainly of the scooter type and widely used in urban areas. In the first session, sliding tests were carried out, with the speed in the range 10–50 km/h, on three different types of road surface. Analysis of the evidence allowed the dissipative main phases of motion of the motorcycle (the impact with the ground, the rebounds and the stabilized swiping) to be identified and some factors affecting the phenomenon to be studied. The coefficient of average deceleration was calculated using two typical equations. The second test session consisted of drag tests. In these tests, the motorcycle, which had previously laid on its side, was dragged for a few metres at a constant speed of about 20 km/h, while the drag force was measured. A comparison of the results obtained in these tests with those obtained in the sliding tests yielded very good agreement in the coefficients of deceleration.

AbstractCrawling robots have elicited much attention in recent years due to their stable and efficient locomotion. In this work, several crawling robots are developed using two types of soft pneumatic actuators (SPAs), namely, an axial elongation SPA and a dual bending SPA. By constraining the deformation of the elastomeric chamber, the SPAs realize their prescribed motions, and the deformations subjected to pressures are characterized with numerical models. Experiments are performed for verification, and the results show good agreement. The SPAs are fabricated by casting and developed into crawling robots with 3D-printing connectors. Control schemes are presented, and crawling tests are performed. The speeds predicted by the numerical models agree well with the speeds in the experiments.
