Abstract The main purpose of the paper is to provide a concise account of the advantages and disadvantages of group work in the activity of professional artists cooperating in various creative teams. The analyzed data comes from three different sources: the authors’ own experience gained through their work as part of various focus groups, other authors’ research results found in the publications on creatology, and the authors’ own investigative work. The aspects of teamwork (group mind) as well as limitations and drawbacks of team work in groups (group thinking) are discussed in the first part of the paper. The second part describes select results of research conducted over the last few years among Polish female artists and film and theatre directors working on joint projects in creative teams. The study examined the determinants of the women’s creative careers. The final section includes a number of conclusions that aim to answer the question posed in the title of the paper.

Purpose – This study aims to examine the nature and the potential use of avatar-based focus groups (AFGs) (i.e. focus groups conducted in three-dimensional [3D] virtual worlds [VWs]) as compared to face-to-face and online focus groups (OFGs), motivated by the ability of VWs to stimulate the realism of physical places. Over the past decade, there has been a rapid increase in using 3D VWs as a research tool. Design/methodology/approach – Using a two-phase reflective approach, data were collected first by using traditional face-to-face focus groups, followed by AFGs. In Phase 2, an online, semi-structured survey provided comparison data and experiences in AFGs, two-dimensional OFGs and traditional face-to-face focus groups. Findings – The findings identify the advantages and disadvantages of AFGs for marketing research. There is no evident difference in data quality between the results of AFGs and face-to-face focus groups. AFG compensates for some of the serious limitations associated with OFGs. Practical implications – The paper reflects on three issues, data quality, conduct of AFGs (including the moderator reflection) and participant experience, that together inform one’s understanding of the characteristics, advantages and limitations of AFG. Originality/value – This is the first paper to compare between AFGs, traditional face-to-face focus groups and OFGs. AFG holds many advantages over OFGs and even, sometimes, over face-to-face focus groups, providing a suitable environment for researchers to collect data.

The aim of this paper is to explore the rationale for the reform of the shares of local government units (LGUs) in national income taxes in Poland as well as to evaluate the selected proposals for changes in this area. The paper begins by outlining the definition and the basic features of tax sharing in the context of fiscal federalism. The next section provides an overview of the tax shares operating in some OECD countries. The main part of the article focuses on the key principles of the tax sharing system in Poland. The author briefly examines the fiscal efficiency of this source of local revenue in different types of Polish LGUs and the most significant dysfunctions of Polish local tax shares. The final section investigates the most important proposals for the reform of tax sharing and discusses their advantages and disadvantages.

The article discusses task-based learning (TBL) in Spanish: enfoque por tareas, which is a teaching approach whose aim is to develop the learner’s communicative competence as well as to help the teacher activate language learners in the classroom – in this case learners of Spanish. The article describes the main objectives of the task and projects defined in the Common European Framework, including the proposed activities designed to fulfill a given task. The final section presents a sample set of lessons following TBL and analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of this approach.

 We present a case study on the introduction of video assignments into Level 4 (year 1) and 6 (year 3) modules within a BSc Mathematics degree. The students were required to provide verbal explanations within a video about some written steps in their argument. We present the details of the assignments and assessment criteria. The introduction of the video assignments was evaluated through focus groups. We present a number of advantages and disadvantages from the students’ perspective when they compared the methods of providing answers through videos, presentations and written work. In particular, we present information on confidence levels, the ability to spot mistakes, skills development and the usefulness for job applications. We provide some practical suggestions for anyone thinking about introducing their own video assignment.

This chapter considers the approaches taken by international regimes to address marine pollution. It identifies similarities and differences in approaches across time and different sources of pollution, the degree to which they follow an adaptive management approach, and the role of science in decision-making. It begins with an overview of the historical development of the law. It then discusses the current regime, covering general obligations and certain source-specific obligations. The final section contains conclusions and a discussion of current and future issues.

Purpose: The current study was based on analyzing effect of team work on employee satisfaction, as team work is considered to be a crucial factor for achieving organizational goals. Methodology/Sampling: A survey was conducted among 384 employees from different organization to analyze their team work experience. Regression analysis was applied to access the significance of linear relationship on data under study. Findings: It was found that team work has a significant impact on employee satisfaction. Future research should investigate the ways in which teamwork interest can be moderated by characteristics of the task and the group, preferably those characteristics that instructors have some control over to facilitate group work experiences. Practical Implications: Employers value team work skills from incoming employees with higher education. Hence it is critical that instructors in higher education institutions understand the importance of teamwork and the factors that contribute to positive teamwork environment. The study will be helpful for HR departments to understand the importance of team work and for devising better work groups.

The overall aim of this chapter is to provide a better understanding of how a specific technique of online research methodology, online focus groups, has been theoretically conceptualized and practically utilized in order to examine its advantages and disadvantages to improve future applications of this technique in qualitative and mixed methods research. The chapter offers an overview of qualitative and mixed methods empirical research using online focus groups in different disciplines and outlines the strengths and weaknesses of this data collection technique. In addition, based on the review of empirical and theoretical research, the current and emerging practices in and characteristics of using online focus groups for data collection are outlined and used to suggest future trends in using this data collection technique in qualitative and mixed methods research.

The purpose of this article is to provide an initial analysis of the study related to the process of receiving and responding to the WhatsApp official group messages at work. Many previous studies have focused on the usage factors, advantages and disadvantages, as well as the implications of using WhatsApp. But this paper will reveal the interpretation of a small group of employees at Universiti Utara Malaysia of their roles and actions related to WhatsApp official group messages. A total number of five administrative and academic staffs had been involved in this initial study.  The results of this initial study will be used to strengthen the interview questions for the next phases of this study - focus groups and in-depth interviews, as well as the development of a questionnaire instrument. This initial study revealed that all Informants have joined at least one WhatsApp official group and have a number of other WhatsApp groups. Three dominant themes emerged and had been interpreted from the data as related to reception and feedback to the WhatsApp messages, namely the reception and message development; the use of appropriate grammar and manners; and the awareness of time value, respect differences, and message impacts to the organization. This study contributes to an understanding of the real situation of the usage of WhatsApp group in an organization where the selected employees are aware that every message they want to share with others may affect their organization.

ObjectiveAlthough SLE disproportionately affects minority racial groups, they are significantly under-represented in clinical trials in the USA. This may lead to misleading conclusions in race-based subgroup analyses. We conducted focus groups to evaluate the perceptions of diverse patients with lupus about clinical trial participation.MethodsA qualitative research design employed three 90 min focus groups led by a trained moderator and guided by the Theory of Planned Behaviour. Open-ended questions about trial participation included advantages and disadvantages (behavioural beliefs), approving and disapproving significant others (normative beliefs), and participation enhancers and barriers (control beliefs). Discussions were recorded, transcribed and analysed to identify emerging themes.ResultsPatients with SLE (n=23) aged 21–72, with increased proportion of minority groups (65%), participated. Reported advantages of trial participation included altruism and personal benefit. Disadvantages included uncertainties, disappointment, information burden, and life–health balance. Although some patients had discussed research participation with approving or disapproving family or friends, self-approval superseded external approval. Barriers included logistics and time, and facilitators included flexibility in scheduling, advance notice of studies, streamlined forms, and hope for SLE improvement.ConclusionsKnowledge about potential benefits of clinical trial participation was high. Minority patients demonstrated confidence in making their own informed decisions, but major barriers for all participants included burdensome forms, travel, childcare, and work. These suggest a major impact on minority and all recruitment from behavioural and control aspects, which should be considered in the logistics of trial design. This does not minimise the potential importance of improved access and education about clinical research.

The article considers the energy efficiency of energy production from various types of fuel. The analysis of the negative impact of the use of various types of fuel on the environment. The most significant indicators for assessing the environmental efficiency of the use of fuel for electricity production are established. A comparison is made with the performance indicators that are currently used. The advantages and disadvantages are established. The necessity of developing a more effective methodology for assessing environmental performance is substantiated. A new methodology for assessing the environmental efficiency of using various methods for the production of electricity is proposed. Research results are presented.
