Abstract Monsters can be divided into two categories: human-like and non-human. Non-human monsters tend to be chthonic beings that are associated with the earth and natural forces. Humanoid monsters represent metaphorical transformations of humanity itself, and as such reveal basic cultural values, such as sociability, while displaying their opposite. Humanoid monsters are the more terrifying, precisely because we recognize ourselves in them, although in an uncanny refraction. In the epic poem Beowulf and in myth and ritual of the Kwakiutl and Heiltsuk cultures of the Northwest Coast, manlike monsters play a central role.

The Mediterranean is grown up as one of the most developed tourist regions on the Earth, but development of mass tourism brought to the big saturation of space, causing environmental problems. As a consequence, today the Mediterranean is faced with a great challenge: how to preserve natural and cultural values as a basis for tourism industry and, in the same time, to keep high reputation on the globalized tourist market. In this work are analyzed the environmental effects of tourism and problems aggravating the concept of the sustainable development. There are also shown the key measures, that can enable development of tourism on a sustainable basis. Particular attention is dedicated to institutional and organizational factors having a crucial role in defining guidelines related to protection and sustainable usage of the Mediterranean Sea with its coastal area.

AbstractThe epic poem of Ludovico Ariosto, Orlando Furioso (1516–1532), one of the most influential texts of Renaissance writing, shows not only a precise cognition of early modern cartographic knowledge, as Alexandre Doroszlaï has illustrated it in Ptolemée et l’hippogriffe (1998), but also performs a complex transmedial translation of cartographic depictions. The journeys around the globe of the Christian paladins Ruggiero and Astolfo narrated by Ariosto are, in fact, performative negotiations between literary and cartographic processes. Riding the Hippograph, the hybrid vehicle par excellence, Ruggiero and Astolfo fly over the Earth as if they were flying over a map. Their journeys do not merely transmedially translate the course to the West pursued by Early Modern Europe. Rather, by translating the map Ariosto performs a new geopoetics that turns away from the symbolic dominance of the East (or “Ent-Ostung”, as Peter Sloterdijk has usefully called it) and offers us one of the first poetic versions of modern globalization.

The Tlingit Indians occupy all of Southeastern Alaska from Dixon's Entrance to Cape St. Elias except the southern half of Prince of Wales Island, which is Haida, and Annette Island, which is a Tsimshian reservation. Formerly all of this region was Tlingit.Throughout this entire district and extending into the southern half of the Northwest Coast culture area, petroglyphs abound. These inscriptions in their simpler forms have much in common with those of widely separated regions of the earth. There are simple cups, rings, spirals, concentric circles, etc. But the typical petroglyphs of this area are as original as the well-known decorative art of the Northwest Coast and apparently closely affiliated with it in both form and meaning. It is the goal of this article to present tangible evidence that these petroglyphs originated from (a) natural effects and (b) depressions worn in rock in the process of tool-making.

The multi-dimentional crisis which includes the uncontrolled population explosion, the more dense settlement, the amount of pollutants in the earth, water crisis, global warming, and a lot of life pressure / stress are signs of the social problems of the development process. That is why, we need to reflect critically on the goals of development and values that discourage development. In this article, the author seeks to explore ethical values in traditional Baduy society which can be used as inspiration in applying development values that can minimize the problem raised by development. This research used qualitative approach. Research results show that community grouping in isolated community can be used ethically as a means to measure mentality of Indonesian development. For example the ethics of Baduy reflects social character to develop the pillars for national cultural values, technological development scenario, food security, independence, lifestyle, promoting the interests of society, focus on running projects, and away from the politics of economic transactions and power in development. On the other hand there are symptoms of the destruction of isolated communities ethics under the pretext of environmentally friendly development that comes from inside and outside.

Abstract. The United Nations proclaimed a decade of marine science for sustainable development (2021–2030) to develop a common framework that will ensure that ocean science can fully support countries in achieving the goal of sustainable development. Marine scientific understanding is fundamental to managing human activities that affect this environment, and ocean observations have a particularly important role in enhancing the knowledge base of our oceans. With this important task, scientists have the responsibility to act in an ethical way and apply all the fundamental principles described in the Cape Town statement: (a) ethical values, (b) social values and (c) cultural values (Peppoloni and Di Capua, 2017).This article is a fist attempt to highlight the core values applicable to ocean observation, which can then be improved and adopted as part of geoethics and the stewardship of the Earth system. It opens up avenues for reflection on geoethical implications in the field of ocean observation and suggests nine key principles that marine scientists could follow in their innovative research regarding open access to data, effectiveness, compliance with laws, environmental respect and nature conservation, reciprocal relation and cultural respect, equity and fairness, knowledge transfer, governance adapted to socio-ecological systems, and the use of animals in research.

This article aims to understand the benefits of values in the implementation of the earth alms tradition from the point of view of the theory of functionalism. The method used in the data collection process in writing this article was carried out by examining and exploring several books, journals, and documents, both printed and electronic, which were considered relevant to the study carried out. In Indonesia, there are many kinds of traditions, one of which is the earth alms tradition, which is a tradition in the form of traditional celebrations aimed at the earth as a form of public gratitude for the salvation given by the Almighty Creator. In the earth alms tradition, there are various ritual activities carried out, and there are benefits and values that can be studied with functionalism theories such as faith values, worship values, social values, cultural values, and philosophical values.

What is the environment? To many, the environment is the space in which animals and plants dwell, and is separate from humans. One’s wellbeing is considered to be internal; the health of a person is often seen as a self-contained process of individual longevity and happiness. In the Hawaiian language, there are two approximate phrases for the notion of environment: 1) ʻano o ka nohona - oneʻs relationship to oneʻs place, and 2) nā mea e hoʻopuna ana - everything that encircles the person. The linoleum block print, Ola ka ʻāina (loosely translated as "We, the environment, thrive"), represents the intertwined relationship between humans and “the environment.”Within the print, the sun’s energy trickles down as stream water to sustain the agricultural fields of traditional crops, then becomes ocean in which sea creatures dwell. It then drapes the woman as hair, which represents spiritual power within Hawaiian and Korean culture, only to return back to the earth in which new life grows. As an artist and farmer with Hawaiian and Korean cultural values, the environment is not a separate entity from man, but a physical manifestation of relationships. Therefore, our well-being is dependent on how we connect and care for each other. ʻĀina, a Hawaiian word often translated as “land,” literally means “that which feeds.” Therefore, the way we interact with our skies, mountains, fields, oceans, and other living beings is a reflection of our own health as individuals. This notion continues to be an essential foundation for the sustainability of the collective health of my cultures and has immensely influenced my work as an undergraduate scholar in sustainable agriculture at Stanford University. I hope to encourage everyone to cultivate a relationship with all that is around us through growing and eating whole foods,

The motion of an artificial satellite around the Moon is much more complicated than that around the Earth, since the shape of the Moon is a triaxial ellipsoid and the effect of the Earth on the motion is very important even for a very close satellite. The differential equations of motion of the satellite are written in canonical form of three degrees of freedom with time depending Hamiltonian. By eliminating short-periodic terms depending on the mean longitude of the satellite and by assuming that the Earth is moving on the lunar equator, however, the equations are reduced to those of two degrees of freedom with an energy integral.Since the mean motion of the Earth around the Moon is more rapid than the secular motion of the argument of pericentre of the satellite by a factor of one order, the terms depending on the longitude of the Earth can be eliminated, and the degree of freedom is reduced to one. Then the motion can be discussed by drawing equi-energy curves in two-dimensional space. According to these figures satellites with high inclination have large possibilities of falling down to the lunar surface even if the initial eccentricities are very small. The principal properties of the motion are not changed even if plausible values ofJ3andJ4of the Moon are included. This paper has been published in Publ. astr. Soc.Japan15, 301, 1963.

The phenomena accompanying the impact of large meteorites on the surface of the Moon or of the Earth can be examined on the basis of the theory of explosive phenomena if we assume that, instead of an exploding meteorite moving inside the rock, we have an explosive charge (equivalent in energy), situated at a certain distance under the surface.

The difference between average densities of the Moon and Earth was interpreted in the preceding report by Professor H. Urey as indicating a difference in their chemical composition. Therefore, Urey assumes the Moon's formation to have taken place far away from the Earth, under conditions differing substantially from the conditions of Earth's formation. In such a case, the Earth should have captured the Moon. As is admitted by Professor Urey himself, such a capture is a very improbable event. In addition, an assumption that the “lunar” dimensions were representative of protoplanetary bodies in the entire solar system encounters great difficulties.
