Abstract The growing demand for enhanced capacities, broadband services, and high transmission speeds to accommodate speech, image, multimedia, and data communication simultaneously puts a requirement for antenna to operate in multiple frequency bands. A novel compact fractal antenna based on self-similar stair-shaped fractal geometry is proposed in this paper. The fractal antenna is designed by modifying the patch antenna through the iterative process using stair-shaped fractal geometry. The third iteration results in a tri-band response, and the antenna resonate at 3.65, 4.825, and 6.325 GHz with impedance bandwidths of 75.6, 121.2, and 211.4 MHz, respectively. The antenna is designed in CST Microwave studio, and evaluated for operating bands and radiation characteristics. Prototype for the third iteration of the fractal antenna is fabricated on FR-4 substrate which is further tested for measured operating bands and radiation characteristics. The simulated and measured results show good agreement.

Purpose Antenna miniaturization, multiband operation and wider operational bandwidth are vital to achieve optimal design for modern wireless communication devices. Using fractal geometries is recognized as one of the most promising solutions to attain these characteristics. The purpose of this paper is to present a unique structure of patch antenna using hybrid fractal technique to enhance the performance characteristics for various wireless applications and to achieve better miniaturization. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, the authors propose a novel hybrid fractal antenna by combining Koch and Minkowski (K-M) fractal geometries. A microstrip patch antenna (MPA) operating at 1.8 GHz is incorporated with a novel K-M hybrid fractal geometry. The proposed fractal antenna is designed and simulated in CST Microwave studio and compared with existing Koch fractal geometry. The prototype for the third iteration of the K-M fractal antenna is then fabricated on FR-4 substrate and tested through vector network analyzer for operating band/voltage standing wave ratio. Findings The third iteration of the proposed K-M fractal geometry results in achieving a 20% size reduction as compared to an ordinary MPA for the same resonant frequency with impedance bandwidth of 16.25 MHz and a directional gain of 6.48 dB, respectively. The operating frequency of MPA also lowers down to 1.44 GHz. Originality/value Further testing for the radiation patterns in an anechoic chamber shows good agreement to those of simulated results.

This work presents the design and analysis of a beam switching antenna for VANET, Wi-Fi, and WiMAX wireless communication systems. The proposed reconfigurable antenna is powered by a coaxial cable and consists of a circular patch, six fish-shaped radiating elements, and a circular planar ground. The antenna was constructed on a Rogers RT5880 substrate. Its dimensions are as follows: 0.81λ0 × 0.81λ0 × 0.03λ0. It performs six reconfigurable operating states, at the same frequency, by controlling the activation and deactivation of six PIN diodes to change the beam’s direction. A theoretical equivalent circuit model of the antenna is extracted. A progressive analysis of improving the antenna characteristic performances is provided. The bandwidth of the proposed antenna is 9.07% (measured), 9.62% (simulated), and 9.31% (theoretical). The designed antenna has a maximum gain of 9.57 dB for all pattern states and a superior efficiency ratio from 85% to 95% over the operating range (5.54 GHz–6.10 GHz). The proposed reconfigurable antenna is fabricated. Measured, simulated, and theoretical results are given and show good agreement, including reflection coefficient (S11) and radiation patterns.

Purpose – In this research paper, the electrical and radiation characteristics of a proposed fractal antenna based on the Koch curve in the second iteration for reception of digital terrestrial television signals are designed and analyzed by laboratory tests. Methodology/approach/design – The design is based on the concepts of fractal geometry and on a previously designed antenna, which is adapted to obtain a different frequency of operation; the designed antenna is constructed in three different ways, finally, they are tested in the lab using vector-network-analyzer, that allows to measure parameters, such as: VSWR, gain and radiation pattern. Findings – The fractal antenna based on the Koch curve has the necessary characteristics to receive digital terrestrial television signals in the UHF band.

This paper presents a compact, tri-bands, rectangular patch antenna based on H-Tree fractal slots structure for modern wireless communication systems has been introduced. The antenna structure consists of a 70.70×56mm2 rectangular patch printed on 173×173×1.6mm3 FR4 substrate. H-Tree slots fractal geometry with the defective ground plane on the other side to enhance gain and bandwidth. The suggested antenna is fed by a 50 Ω microstrip line. The antenna shows three resonance frequencies: 0.784, 1.158, and 1.772 GHz. The suggested antenna offers a total size reduction of about 75 %. The designed antenna possesses fractional bandwidths of 3.976 %, 7 %, and 2.7866 % for the first, second, and third resonances, respectively. Finally, the proposed antenna is a candidate for Global System for Mobile communications (GSM).

In this article, a compact narrow-bandpass filter with high selectivity and improved rejection level is presented. For miniaturization, a pair of double negative (DNG) cells consisting of quasi-planar chiral resonators are cascaded and electrically loaded to a microstrip transmission line; short ended stubs are introduced to expand upper rejection band. The structure is analyzed using equivalent circuit models and simulated based on EM simulation software. For validation, the proposed filter is fabricated and measured. The measured results are in good agreement with the simulated ones. By comparing to other filters in the references, it is shown that the proposed filter has the advantage of skirt selectivity and compact size, so it can be integrated more conveniently in modern wireless communication systems and microwave planar circuits.

Device-to-Device (D2D) communications are considered one of the key technologies for 5G wireless communication systems. In this paper, a resource sharing mechanism, which applies different policies for different cases (thus being categorized), is proposed. In this scheme, all D2D pairs are divided into three groups by comparing the minimum transmit power with the maximum transmit power of each cellular UE. The proposed mechanism enables multiple D2D pairs in the second group to share the resource with cellular user equipment (UE) simultaneously, by adjusting the transmit powers of these D2D transmitters. At the same time, D2D pairs in the first group and the third group share resource with cellular UE based on the transmit power minimization principle. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can achieve relatively higher network throughput and lower transmit power consumption of the D2D system.
