Abstract Aluminum alloy AA1100 has less wear resistance and mechanical properties than that of other aluminum alloys. This research work is on the fabrication of surface composites of AA1100 alloy by friction stir processing (FSP). The surface composites are fabricated by reinforcing hBN (hexagonal Boron Nitride) in AA1100 alloy to improve the mechanical and tribological properties. The influence of process parameters, rotational speed (rpm), and transverse speed (mm/min) on the microstructural evolution and properties of the fabricated surface composites is investigated.

Friction stir processing is an avant-garde technique of producing new surface composite or changing the different properties of a material through intense, solid-state localized material plastic deformation. This change in properties depends upon the deformation formed by inserting a non-consumable revolving tool into the workpiece and travels laterally through the workpiece. This research work highlights the effect of process parameters on mechanical properties of fabricated surface composites by friction stir processing. By using various reinforcing materials like Ti, SiC, B4C, Al2O3 with waste elements like waste eggshells, rice husks, coconut shell and coir will be used to fabricate the green composites which are environmentally friendly and reduces the problem of decomposition. The parameter for this experiment is considered as the reinforcing materials, tool rotation speed and tool tilt angle. The SiC/Al2O3/Ti along with eggshell are selected asreinforcement materials. The main effect of the reinforcement is to improve mechanical properties, like hardness, impact strength and strength. The results revealed that the process parameters significantly affect the mechanical properties of friction stir processed surface composites.

PurposeThe objective of the paper is to evaluate the fabrication process and to study the influence of process parameters of friction stir processing of 6061-TiB2-Al2O3 Aluminum alloy surface composite on microhardness tensile strength, and microstructure.Design/methodology/approachFriction stir processing method is used for attaining the desired mechanical properties, and selectively processed reinforcements to fabricate the samples. The Taguchi technique was used to optimize rotational speed, travel speed and volume percentage of reinforcement particles to enhance the mechanical properties of 6061-TiB2-Al2O3 Aluminum alloy composite.FindingsThe fabrication of surface composites through FSP allows new inventions in terms of material with enhanced surface layers without changing the base metal.Practical implicationsTo examine the behavior of the surface of the composites in the different zones, the practical implication consists of the use of different characterization techniques like optical microscopy and scanning microscopy for microstructural behavior and the measurement of hardness and tensile tests for mechanical behavior.Originality/valueThe research work consists of tool design and process parameters, which can affect the final product (microstructural changes), and the performance of the modified surface layer behavior was studied and presented.

Improving the mechanical durability and wear resistance of aluminum alloys is a research challenge that can be solved by their reinforcement with ceramics. This article is concerned with the improvement of the mechanical properties and wear resistance of the AA2024 aluminum alloy surface. Surface composites were prepared by incorporating a hybrid of heavy particles (tantalum carbide (TaC), light nanoparticles, and boron nitride (BN)) into the AA2024 alloy using the friction stir process (FSP) approach. Three pattern holes were milled in the base metal to produce the composites with different volume fractions of the reinforcements. The effects of the FSP and the reinforcements on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and wear resistance are investigated. In addition to the FSP, the reinforced particles contributed to greater grain refinement. The rolled elongated grains became equiaxed ultrafine grains reaching 6 ± 1 µm. The refinement and acceptable distribution in the reinforcements significantly improved the hardness and wear resistance of the produced composites. Overall, the hardness was increased by 60% and the wear resistance increased by 40 times compared to the base alloy.

Poor tribological properties restrict structural applications of aluminum alloys and surface composites of aluminum alloys have gained more attention in material processing. The addition of solid lubricant reinforcement particles along with abrasive ceramics contributes to the enhancement of tribological performance of surface composites. In the present study, the solid-state technique, friction stir processing (FSP) was used to develop mono (B4C) and hybrid (B4C + MoS2) surface composites in the AA6061-T651 aluminum alloy. The hybrid surface composites were produced by varying an amount of MoS2. Multipass FSP with different direction strategies was adopted for achieving uniform distribution of reinforcement powders in the aluminum matrix. Microstructure analysis showed a uniform dispersal of reinforcement particles without any clustering or agglomeration in the processing zone. Microhardness and wear performance of mono and hybrid composites improved in comparison with the base metal. The mono surface composite exhibited the highest hardness while the hybrid surface composite (75%B4C + 25%MoS2) achieved the highest wear resistance. This was attributed to the solid lubricant nature of MoS2. Furthermore, dissolution of the strengthening precipitate condition during multipass FSP without reinforcement particles resulted in the reduction of hardness and wear resistance.

Effect of carbon nanotube(CNT) on structure, strength and tribological behavior of CNT/PU composites is studied in the filler range of 5 vol%. It is found that differences in filler content used to determine the type of structure evolved and patterns of variation of mechanical properties, friction and wear in response to increasing filler content. It is found that wear of low-filled CNT/PU composites is dominated by delamination mechanism and wear resistance changes correlate with structural transformations of the composites. The maximum increase in wear resistance of the PU composites is reached at 2 vol% filling.

Potential relations of tribological characteristics of aluminum antifriction alloys with their compositions and mechanical properties were investigated. In this regard, the properties of eight aluminum alloys containing tin from 5.4% to 11% doped with lead, copper, silicon, zinc, magnesium, and titanium were studied. Mechanical properties such as hardness, strength, relative extension, and impact strength were analyzed. Within the tribological tests seizure load and wear of material were evaluated and secondary structures were studied afterwards. The absence of a definitive correlation between tribological behavior and mechanical properties was shown. It was determined that doping tin over 6% is excessive. The seizure load of the alloys increases with the magnesium content. Secondary structures of the alloys with higher wear rates contain one order less magnesium and tin.

The paper deals with the change in mechanical properties and wear of 1.2842 universal tool steel after plasma nitriding, which is widely used to produce cutting tools with good durability and low operating costs. Plasma nitriding was performed at a temperature of 500 °C for 10-hour period in a standard N2 /H2 atmosphere with 1:3 gases ratio. Microstructure, phase structure, thickness of a nitriding layer and surface roughness of samples were measured with optical microscopes and a profilometer. Verification of a chemical composition was carried out on the BAS TASMAN Q4 device. Wear resistance was measured on a universal TRIBOLAB UTM 3 tribometer, through a, “pin on disc“ method. The results of experiments have shown that plasma nitriding process, significantly improves the mechanical and tribological properties of selected materials.

W(100-x)%Cx% coatings with different tungsten and carbon contents were deposited by unbalanced magnetron sputtering. The microstructures and mechanical properties of the W(100-x)%C x% coatings was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), nanoindentation and adhesion testing techniques. The tribological performance of the coatings was investigated using a pin-on-disc trobometer under dry conditions. Experimental results indicated that coating microstructure, mechanical properties and wear resistance varied according to the tungsten and carbon contents of the coatings. The W72%C28% coating had the highest hardness/elastic modulus (H/E) ratio. In the ball-on-disc wear tests, it was found that the W72%C28% coating exhibited the best wear resistance.
