The paper deals with the change in mechanical properties and wear of 1.2842 universal tool steel after plasma nitriding, which is widely used to produce cutting tools with good durability and low operating costs. Plasma nitriding was performed at a temperature of 500 °C for 10-hour period in a standard N2 /H2 atmosphere with 1:3 gases ratio. Microstructure, phase structure, thickness of a nitriding layer and surface roughness of samples were measured with optical microscopes and a profilometer. Verification of a chemical composition was carried out on the BAS TASMAN Q4 device. Wear resistance was measured on a universal TRIBOLAB UTM 3 tribometer, through a, “pin on disc“ method. The results of experiments have shown that plasma nitriding process, significantly improves the mechanical and tribological properties of selected materials.

W(100-x)%Cx% coatings with different tungsten and carbon contents were deposited by unbalanced magnetron sputtering. The microstructures and mechanical properties of the W(100-x)%C x% coatings was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), nanoindentation and adhesion testing techniques. The tribological performance of the coatings was investigated using a pin-on-disc trobometer under dry conditions. Experimental results indicated that coating microstructure, mechanical properties and wear resistance varied according to the tungsten and carbon contents of the coatings. The W72%C28% coating had the highest hardness/elastic modulus (H/E) ratio. In the ball-on-disc wear tests, it was found that the W72%C28% coating exhibited the best wear resistance.

Alumina and both tetragonal and cubic zirconia based composites with various volume fractions of constituents as well as with addition of carbon nanofibers were prepared by EPD. Mechanical properties (hardness, Youngs modulus) were measured by depth sensing indentation methods and related to chemical composition. Tribological behavior was studied using pin-on-disc technique at room temperatures in air at dry sliding. Coefficient of friction and wear rates were measured, the types of wear regimes were observed and damage micromechanisms identified.

The o-rings in ball retained overdentures deteriorate with time and need replacement to restore the retentive quality. We evaluated retrospectively the mechanical properties of o-rings after 3 years in function in one and two-piece implant-supported overdentures. The o-rings were retrieved from one-piece (Myriad snap, Equinox-Straumann, 3.3 x 13mm) and two-piece (Neo Biotech, 3.3 x 13mm) implant-supported overdenture patients. A total of 16 pairs of matrices were tested for wear, type of damage and elasticity using Pin on Disc method, USB Digital Camera in 30x zoom and Universal Tensile Machine respectively. The statistical analysis for independent groups were done with the Mann-Whitney U test. Assessment of used O-rings showed 84% more wear in the two-piece system with an abrasive type of damage while 46% wear in the one-piece system with a compressive type of damage. The o-rings in one-piece system showed increase in elongation and maximum displacement to 2% and 7% respectively, while two-piece system showed decrease in elongation and maximum displacement by 13% and 6% respectively. In one-piece system, the loss of retention was more with slow wear rate and in two-piece system, the wear resistance of O-rings decreased due to increased stiffness. Further studies to evaluate the changes in O-ring with increased sample size and at interval 1 year will pave way for insight into the progressive changes in the mechanical properties of an O-ring.

We conducted comparative tests of the wear resistance of metals operating under abrasive conditions. Samples were cut from the working parts of mixer-pneumosuperchargers. The chemical composition and mechanical properties were determined. To compare samples under abrasive wear conditions, we designed and assembled a carousel installation. The principle of its operation is based on mixing the abrasive medium by the samples being studied with a given speed. Wear resistance was evaluated by weight loss by samples after several test cycles. To determine changes in the structure of the metal during abrasive wear, metallographic studies of the samples were carried out before and after the tests. It is shown that the best complex of service and mechanical properties is possessed by 110G13L steel.

In the present study, the effect of various N 2 gas flow rates on friction coefficient and surface roughness of TiN -coated D2 tool steel was examined by a commercially available cathodic arc physical vapor deposition (CAPVD) technique. A Pin-on-Disc test was carried out to study the Coefficient of friction (COF) versus sliding distance. A surface roughness tester measured the surface roughness parameters. The minimum values for the COF and surface roughness were recorded at a N 2 gas flow rate of 200 sccm. The increase in the COF and surface roughness at a N 2 gas flow rate of 100 sccm was mainly attributed to an increase in both size and number of titanium particles, whereas the increase at 300 sccm was attributed to a larger number of growth defects generated during the coating process. These ideas make it possible to optimize the coating properties as a function of N 2 gas flow rate for specific applications, e.g. cutting tools for automobiles, aircraft, and various mechanical parts.

AbstractMechanical and tribological properties of soft magnetic thin films with high permeability and low coercivity are very important for the application of these films in high-density recording heads. This paper reports our experimental observations on these important properties of FeTaN thin film head materials. Hardness(H) and Young’s modulus(E) for FeTaN sputtered films were determined by nanoindentation. Wear resistance of these films against commercial magnetic tapes was measured with a sphere-on-flat wear tester. The experimental results indicate that the FeTa films can be hardened when nitrogen is introduced. It was found in this study that the thermal stability of the mechanical properties such as hardness of thin films containing nitrogen is better than that of the film without nitrogen. However, our experiments also revealed that the wear resistance of FeTaN films decreases when the concentration of nitrogen increases and the hardness of the worn surface at a wear scar is lower than that of the unworn surface.

In this work the influence of electrolytic-plasma nitriding on the abrasive wear-resistance of R6M5 high-speed steel were under research. We registered that after electrolytic-plasma nitriding on R6M5 steel surface modified layer is formed with 20-40 μm thickness and with increased microhardness of 9000-12200 MPa. Testing mode for the nitrided samples high-speed steel on abrasive wear developed. It is established, that electrolyte-plasma nitriding allows to increase wear-resistance of R6M5 steel surface layer comparing to original. It was determined that abrasive wear-resistance of R6M5 steel surface layer is increased to 25% as a result of electrolytic plasma nitriding. Thus, studies have demonstrated the feasibility and applicability of electrolytic-plasma nitriding in order to improve cutting tools work resource, working under friction and wear conditions.

The nano crystalline thin coating of NiFe and NiP C has been successfully carried out by using electroplating technique in order to enhance the structural and mechanical properties of mild steel. The NiFe & NiP thin layers were coated on mild steel at constant current density and pH over a deposition period of 30 minutes. All the coated mild steel samples were subjected to various characterization techniques like X-ray Diffraction method (XRD), Vickers hardness, surface roughness and wear test to reveal the effect of NiFe and NiP on mild steel. The mechanical properties such as surface roughness and wear behavior were investigated by using Stylus profilometer and Pin on disc method. The coated mild steel exhibits enhanced mechanical properties than that of uncoated mild steel. The variations in structural and mechanical properties of coated mild steel were also studied.

This paper studies the influence of variables such as holding temperatures and times during austempering of High Chromium White Cast Iron (HCWCI), with the following chemical composition: Cr 25 %, C 3 %, Si 0.47 %, Mn 0.74 % and Mo 1.02 %. The aim of the austempering was to modify the percentage of retained austenite and its correlation to abrasive wear resistance under different conditions.Microhardness tests, SEM-EDS and XRD were performed to determine mechanical properties, chemical composition, and type of carbides and microstructures present, respectively. The tests complied with the ASTM G-65 standard. Results showed that the best performance against abrasion was achieved for austempering at 450 ºC with holding time of 6 hours.
