Abstract Deep excavation walls can be analyzed and calculated by using classical methods (currently rarely in use due to their many simplifications) or numerical methods. Among the numerical methods we can distinguish a simplified approach, in which the interaction between soil and a wall structure is modelled by a system of elasto-plastic supports, and the finite-element method (FEM) in which the soil is modelled with mesh of elements. It is a common view that if we want to analyze only wall constructions, the first, simplified method of calculation is sufficient. The second method, FEM, is required if we want to further analyze the stress and strain states in the soil and the influence of the excavation on the surrounding area. However, as it is demonstrated in the paper, important differences may appear in the calculation results of both methods. Thus, the safety design of a deep excavation structure depends very much on the choice of calculating method.

In this paper, a 3-axis stage consisted of a XY stage and Z-axis feeding tool holder is proposed for the application of fast tool servo (FTS). The XY stage actuated by six piezoelectric (PZT) actuators is designed with symmetric flexural hinges featuring low interference motions, high stiffness, and fast response. Numerical design using the finite element method (FEM) was conducted to investigate the steady characteristics (displacement, stiffness, stress, and strain) and dynamic characteristic of resonance frequency. According to calculation results, the major characteristics obtained along XYZ axes are as follows: displacements induced are 10.06, 10.28, and 20.31 μm due to the applied voltage being 50 V; stiffness are 112.84, 110.31, and 223.34 kN/mm; the maximum stresses at the hinges are 9.78, 10.9, and 100.56 N/mm2, which are lower than the allowable stress of aluminum used; and the resonant frequencies are 1.0, 0.64, and 0.4 kHz, respectively. Experimental examinations regarding to the resonant frequencies were performed with a maximum deviation of 16% along the Z-axis compared to the simulation result. As a result of the investigation, it is expected that the 3-axis stage can be effectively applied to implement a FTS.

In the factory, pipes for trunk oil and oil product pipelines are obtained by molding and welding. To ensure a cylindrical shape and reduce technological residual stresses, expansion technology is used. Pipe expansion causes a significant change in the values of residual deformations and stresses. The article presents both the calculation results and graphs regarding stress and strain distribution during bending of the stock and their redistribution after expansion. Based on the calculation results, the final total values of residual stresses and residual deformations caused by bending and expansion were stated to be important components of the stress-strain state observed in pipelines being operated under cyclic loading, as well as those used in assessing how degradation affects the ductility of the pipe material. These factors were concluded as being reasonably taken into account when performing verification calculations regarding long-running pipelines if, based on their diagnostics and analysis, their state does not meet modern strength requirements.

The paper presents a numerical analysis of corrugated steel plate (CSP) bridge with reinforced concrete (RC) relieving slab under static loads. Calculations were made based on the finite element method using Abaqus software. Two computation models were used; in the first one, RC slab was used, and the other was without it. The effect of RC slab to deformations of CSP shell was determined. Comparing the computational results from two numerical models, it can be concluded that when the relieving slab is applied, substantial reductions in displacements, stresses, bending mo­ments and axial thrusts are achieved. Relative reductions of displacements were in the range of 53–66%, and stresses of 73–82%. Maximum displacements and bending moments were obtained at the shell crown, and maximum stresses and axial thrusts at the quarter points. The calculation results were also compared to the values from experimental tests. The course of computed displacements and stresses is similar to those obtained from experimental tests, although the absolute values were generally higher than the measured ones. Results of numerical analyses can be useful for bridge engineering, with particular regard to bridges and culverts made from corrugated steel plates for the range of necessity of using additional relieving elements.

disintegration examination and analysis are employed in flexible terminal breakdown of 110 kV XLPE insulated cables. It is considered that the main reason of breakdown is the separation of the stress cone of the terminal and the fracture of the semi- conductive layer of the cable insulation. Therefore, the finite element method is used to electric field model and simulate the dislocation fault of internal stress cone and outer semiconductor layer of cable insulation. The distribution of the electric field intensity is calculated and compared. The simulation and calculation results verify the validity of the breakdown mechanism analysis, and put forward some practical suggestions.

Rigid-hulled inflatable boats are extremely practical and popular nowadays. They offer a effective conciliation among usability and costs. Their stable and seaworthy behaviour is guaranteed by performing hydroplaning hulls coupled with unsinkable inflated tubes. At the same time, their design is often based on tradition and preconceptions. Rarely, the design assumptions are validated by the reality or, even, by deeper investigations. In this article, both numerical methods and experimental mechanics techniques are proposed as an essential way for supporting the designers in their decisive tasks. Three different situations are detailed where a numerical or an experimental approach shows its benefit inside the engineering design process: firstly permitting to investigate the behaviour of materials driving the fiberglass selection; then measuring the levels of stress and strain in the hull during sailing; finally, using all available information as a base for developing numerical models of the hull slamming in waves. Even if the discussion is focused on a rigid inflatable boat, large part of its considerations is relevant beyond this special case.

the article presents the principles and algorithms of the finite element method in solving geotechnical prob-lems taking into account seismic impacts for determining the stress-strain state of structures and slope stabil-ity, implemented in the Midas GTS NX software package. GTS NX allows you to perform calculations of various types of geotechnical problems and solve complex geotechnical problems in a single software envi-ronment. GTS NX covers the entire range of engineering and geotechnical projects, including calculations of the "base-structure" system, deep pits with various mounting options, tunnels of complex shape, consolida-tion and filtration calculations, as well as calculations for dynamic actions and stability calculations. At the same time, all types of calculations in GTS NX can be performed both in 2D and in 3D. The author does not claim to be the author of the finite element method, but he cannot do without pointing out the basic equa-tions, as this affects the definition of the boundaries of use, the formulation of algorithms for constructing calculation schemes and the analysis of calculation results.

The influence of the strain rate on the plastic deformation of the metals was significant during the high strain rate of loading. However, it was very difficult to obtain high strain rate data (≥ 104 s-1) by experimental techniques. Therefore, the finite element method and iterative method were employed in this study. Numerical simulation was used to characterise the deformation behavior of Hadfield steel during explosion treatment. Base on experimental data, a modified Johnson-Cook equation for Hadfield steel under various strain rate was fitted. The development of two field variables was quantified during explosion hardening: equivalent stress and strain rates.

The sequence of application of the mixed method for calculating internal forces in statically indeterminate frames with elements of increased rigidity is given. The main system is chosen for the frame with one kinematic and one force unknown. The canonical equations of the mixed method are written, taking into account their meaning. Completed the construction of the final diagram of the bending moments and all the necessary calculations and checks. When calculating integrals, Vereshchagin's rule is applied. The solution of the problem is checked by performing the calculation using the computer program STAB12.EXE; the results of the calculations are numerically verified using the finite element method. An example of the formation of the initial data for the STAB12.EXE program and the subsequent processing of the calculation results, the rules for comparing the numerical results and the results obtained in the calculation of the frame by the mixed method are given.
