The Effect of Fatigue on the Kinematics of Free Throw Shooting in BasketballFatigue is an indispensible part of a basketball game which may affect an athlete's shooting kinematics. Although kinematic analyses of various sports related movements were extensively done, this study is the first to consider the effects of fatigue on the kinematics of free throw shooting. After measuring the resting heart rate, ten collegiate level, male basketball players (21.8±1.6 y; 192.8±3.6 cm; 84.1±8.5 kg) were asked to perform free throws. Two successful and two unsuccessful free throws were selected. Thereafter, participants were asked to complete the fatigue protocol, which included 30m sprints and 5 vertical jumps at each end, until they reached volitional exhaustion. Additional two successful and two unsuccessful free throws were collected. All shots were recorded by using two digital cameras operating at 60 Hz and placed in a stereoscopic view. The elbow, trunk, knee and ankle joint angles were measured before and after the ball release and at the ball release point. The selected joint angles were compared between successful and unsuccessful free throws, as well as before and after the completion of fatigue protocol. The results demonstrated that fatigue did not effect free throw shooting kinematics (p>0.05) and there was no significant joint angle difference between successful and unsuccessful shots (p>0.05). This study suggested that high level athletes are able to cope with the possible detrimental effects of fatigue while performing coordinated movements such as free throw shooting.

AbstractFatigue modifies the kinematics of various sports-related movements. Basketball induces fatigue, however, the effects of fatigue on the kinematics of shooting have never been studied. This study analysed the effects of fatigue induced by repeated sprints on the kinematics of 3-point shooting (3PS) in young, elite basketball players (U18 level). 3D joint angles were calculated at the maximum and minimum heights of the centre of mass during 3PS, using inertial measurement units (Biomech system, Xsens Technologies BV, Enschede, The Netherlands). Height, velocity and the angle of the ball at the time of release were extrapolated from the wrist joint angles. All players performed four 3PS actions in dynamic conditions before and after a fatigue protocol at 70% of their maximal exercise capacity. The fatigue protocol consisted of a shuttle test with repeated 20-m sprints interspersed with sets of 5 jumps. There was no change in the kinematics of 3PS (p > 0.05), or the ball release variables (p > 0.05) following the fatigue protocol. This suggests that elite basketball players are able to cope with physical fatigue while performing coordinated movements such as 3PS.

The current study intended to investigate the effects of a self-training program on shooting performance and kinematics of young basketball players. Fourteen male basketball players aged 16.64±.50 years, divided in control group (n=7) and experimental group (n=7), were assessed on free-throw, two-point and three-point shooting performance and on four kinematic parameters (release height, release angle, release speed and trajectory variability), before and after a five-week training program. During the five-week period, the experimental group accomplished a shooting training program that included 600 shots per week. Both groups maintained their regular basketball practice. The results show that the experimental group significantly increased their shooting performance on three-point (p<.05) and on free-throw (p<.05). Moreover, a significant decrease in three-point ball release angle (p<.05) and a significant increase in free-throw ball release height (p<.05) were observed in the experimental group, while the control group significantly increased the two-point ball release speed (p<.05). In conclusion, self-shooting basketball practice, in addition to formal practice, significantly improves shooting performance of young basketball players. In contrast, the reduced changes on the analysed kinematic parameters caused by the self-training program are most likely a consequence of the absence of external feedback during training process.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a basketball target rim on free-throw and field-goal shooting accuracy. The target rims employed in this study were different from regular rims as the apparatus that connects the target rim to the backboard was painted a neutral color. Subjects included all of the 1984–85 Eastern Washington University men's basketball players and the other players on 10 basketball teams who played games with the Eastern Washington University men's basketball team in the 1984–85 season. Practice statistics were kept in all EWU shooting situations, drills as well as scrimmages. Individual game statistics of the entire basketball game were made for the 10 games in which the target rims were used. A random selection of combined free-throw and field-goal shooting accuracy taken during the practice sessions showed that shooting percentage on the target rim was noticeably higher than the shooting percentage on the regular rim. The shooting accuracy of the EWU team and the visiting teams during game competition showed that accuracy of field-goal shooting on the target rim was significantly better than on the regular rim but not for free-throw accuracy. The target rim may improve shooting accuracy and influence total scoring in basketball.

By literature review, expert interview, and biomechanical methods, in this study using 3D film analyzing system to reveal the kinematics parameters of shooting in basketball players. The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of joint angles at release and reveal the reason for improving the hit rate in shooting. Ten collegiate level basketball players in this study. After digitizing the data, this study come to the following conclusion that (1) when the basketball players flex their left and right knee joints at about 131.5o and 97.6o respectively at the lowest center of gravity, in this position they can get the ideal shooting distance, (2) in the medium or long range shooting, if the arc of basketball flight is excessively low, it will make the ball touch the hoop and then rebound outwards. Hence, the higher the arc of basketball flight, the higher the hit rate will be in shooting.

The aim of this study was to determine the free throw technique and successful free throw technique both prior to ball release and at ball release moments in under-12 basketball, using a court-applied test. The participants were 102 players from eight male under-12 officially federated basketball teams. We used a point/ideographic/multidimensional observational design to analyse the recordings of 612 free throws. The test consisted of performing one, two or three free throws. One participant performed the free throws and the other passed the ball to him. The roles were exchanged until the two participants performed all the free throw options. As a result, the participants did not execute the free throw using the technique proposed by the literature. This difference was because jumping free throws shoots, with low style, feet at the same distance, and moderate forward displacement of the centre of mass predominated. The free throw technique was in general more regular than that of the successful free throws. Players used an unregulated technique, without meeting the criteria that activate success in the free throw. This technique resulted attempting successful free throws at 4 m from the basket, which is 2.60 m high, with a 485-g ball. Taking into account the characteristics of the participants of the present work in terms of age, strength, maturity, height, weight, and body mass index, coaches and the competition managers should assess what should be improved in under-12 basketball to allow players to increase free throw success.

Research background and hypothesis. While for some authors team sport players should have a high VO 2 max, we hypothesize that there exist a non-linear relationship between VO 2 max and basketball performance. Research aims. Research aims were to study the correlation between basketball performance and VO 2 max in young elite basketball players and the effects of VO 2 max training on performance.Research methods. In the fi rst study, 67 high-level young basketball players performed a shuttle-run test (SRT) to measure their VO 2 max. Competition performance assessed through statistics ratings of 5 matches was determined for all players. The correlation between VO 2 max and performance was calculated. In the second study, the VO 2 max and the competition performance of 34 high-level young male players was assessed as in the fi rst study. The sample was divided into control and experimental groups, which trained their VO 2 max. At the end of the training period all participants repeated the SRT. The results of 4 games played before the fi rst test and 4 games played after the second test (against the same opponents) were compared in both groups.Research results. In the fi rst study we found a correlation of VO 2 max with steals in both groups. In the second study, the experimental group increased their VO 2 max and steals per game, but they decreased free throw per game and free throw percentage. Discussion and conclusions. No correlation was found between VO 2 max and competitive performance in this study, and increased VO 2 max had no effect on most of the studied variables. The data therefore suggest a non-linear relationship between VO 2 max and basketball performance. Keywords: aerobic capacity, basketball performance, non-linear relationship.

ABSTRACTIntroduction: The objective of a basketball game is to insert the ball into the opponent's basket and keep our basket alone so as not to concede the ball. This becomes important because it determines points to improve the ability and maximize points in the game so this needs to be trained. Free throw shots can be done using one hand or two hands. Whereas a free throw is a shot given to a player for committing an offense. This shot is done in the exact position behind the line of free shots in accordance with the rules. Purpose:This study aims to compare training model 1 (beef concept with push up and jogging) and training model 2 (beef concept with dumble and jogging) to improve the accuracy of free throw shooting. This research was conducted on 40 students of SMP Negeri 1 Kuta Selatan who were chosen in simple random which has fulfilled inclusion and exclusion criteria. The sample was divided into two groups so that each group was 20 people and given different treatment for six weeks. Group 1 was given model 1 training and Group 2 was given a model 2 training. Methods:The data obtained were analyzed by paired t- test to find the difference between before and after training in both groups and t-independent test to find the difference of shooting free throw accuracy between groups both before and after the training. The meaning limit is 0.05. The research design used is experimental design Randomized Pre and Post test Group Design. According to Pocock's (2008) theory, each group consisted of 20 groups of 1 and group 2. All groups were given preliminary tests, between treatment one and two treatment were given concurrent training, then each treatment was observed. Results:The result showed that the accuracy of free throw shooting between groups after training was 3.85 ± 1.09 in group 1 and in group 2 was 2.90 ± 1.12. The average accuracy of free throw shooting in training model 1 was higher than with model 2 training which was statistically significantly different with p = 0,010 (p <0,05).Conclution:From the results of this study it is concluded that the training of model 1 further improves the accuracy of free throw shooting rather than training model 2, Suggestion: in practice it is suggested to use training model 1 to improve the accuracy of free throw shooting. Fatigue is an unavoidable part of a basketball game, which may affect an athlete’s performance. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of upper extremity fatigue on grip strength and passing accuracy in basketball, and ascertain if the effects of different fatigue protocols on grip strength and passing accuracy are the same. Twenty-four juniors under 18 years old (age: 16.75 ± 0.62 years; body height: 184.5 ± 3.31 cm; body mass: 77.25 ± 3.22 kg) volunteered to participate in the study, and were divided into two groups. After a warm-up, both groups performed the basketball passing test and grip strength was recorded for each group under three different testing conditions: rest, 70% and 90% exercise intensity. The protocol used for the first group was the chest press, and for the second group the wrist curls. Results show that after the upper extremity fatigue protocol all parameters of the study (grip strength and passing accuracy) showed a significant decrease, and there was no significant difference between both groups regarding grip strength and passing accuracy. The study suggested that in order to avoid upper extremity fatigue, basketball trainers and coaches need to include upper extremity conditioning exercises into their training sessions.
