  The aim of this study was to determine the free throw technique and successful free throw technique both prior to ball release and at ball release moments in under-12 basketball, using a court-applied test. The participants were 102 players from eight male under-12 officially federated basketball teams. We used a point/ideographic/multidimensional observational design to analyse the recordings of 612 free throws. The test consisted of performing one, two or three free throws. One participant performed the free throws and the other passed the ball to him. The roles were exchanged until the two participants performed all the free throw options. As a result, the participants did not execute the free throw using the technique proposed by the literature. This difference was because jumping free throws shoots, with low style, feet at the same distance, and moderate forward displacement of the centre of mass predominated. The free throw technique was in general more regular than that of the successful free throws. Players used an unregulated technique, without meeting the criteria that activate success in the free throw. This technique resulted attempting successful free throws at 4 m from the basket, which is 2.60 m high, with a 485-g ball. Taking into account the characteristics of the participants of the present work in terms of age, strength, maturity, height, weight, and body mass index, coaches and the competition managers should assess what should be improved in under-12 basketball to allow players to increase free throw success.  Resumen: El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar la técnica de tiro libre y la técnica de tiro libre con éxito, tanto antes de la salida del balón como en el momento de salida del balón en baloncesto U-12, a través de un test de tiro. Los participantes fueron 102 jugadores de ocho equipos masculinos de baloncesto U-12 federados. Se utilizó un diseño observacional puntual/ideográfico/multidimensional para analizar las grabaciones de 612 tiros libres. La prueba consistía en realizar uno, dos o tres tiros libres. Un participante realizaba los tiros libres y el otro le pasaba el balón. Los participantes intercambiaban los roles hasta que los dos realizaron todas las opciones de tiro libre. Los resultados mostraron que los participantes no ejecutaron el tiro libre utilizando la técnica propuesta por la literatura. Esta diferencia se debió a que predominaron los tiros libres con salto, con estilo bajo, pies a la misma distancia y desplazamiento moderado del centro de masas hacia adelante. La técnica de los tiros libres en general fue más regular que la de los tiros libres con éxito. En conclusión, los jugadores utilizaron una técnica alejada de las recomendaciones teóricas, poco regular, y sin cumplir los criterios que posibilitan éxito en el tiro libre. Esto ocurrió como consecuencia de intentar obtener éxito en una situación de tiro libre a 4 m de la canasta, situada a 2.60 m de altura, y con un balón de 485 g. Teniendo en cuenta las características de los participantes del presente trabajo en cuanto a edad, fuerza, madurez, altura, peso e índice de masa corporal, los entrenadores y los responsables de las competiciones deberían valorar qué debe mejorarse en el baloncesto U-12 para que los jugadores puedan aumentar el éxito en los tiros libres.

This study was conducted to evaluate the jump performance of youth basketball players according to their sport ages. 26 male basketball players (14.1±1.6 year) who participated in the study were divided into two groups of sport ages of 4 and below (≤4) and 6 and above (≥6). The group with sports ages ≤4 consisted of 12 male basketball players with a height of 162±2.56 cm, a body weight of 51.4±3.04 kg, a body mass index of 19.4±0.74 kg/m². The other group with sports ages ≥6 consisted of 14 male basketball players with a height of 155.9±1.98 cm, a body weight of 45.7±1.85 kg, a body mass index of 18.8±0.69 kg/m. All basketball players’ squat jump (SJ) and countermovement jump (CMJ) were measured (Optojump Microgate Bolzano, Italy). The Mann Whitney U test was used to determine whether there were differences between groups in terms of T flighttimes and jump heights. Statistically significant level of p<0.05 was accepted. As a result of the study, no statistically significant difference was observed between the sport ages and SJ and CMJ splashes. In this respect, it can be considered that the Jump performance does not develop in parallel with the training age, and that the jump ability of this cause may be more related to motor skill and ability than the training age.

This pilot study investigated the relationship between personal and wheelchair factors on skin pressures at the ischial tuberosity in wheelchair basketball players. Seventeen wheelchair basketball players (7 male and 10 female) were evaluated during static and dynamic propulsive conditions while peak pressure index and peak pressure gradient were recorded with an interface pressure mat. The results showed that greater seat dump angles and backrest heights were negatively associated with the peak pressure index. Therapeutic cushion use was moderately associated with a reduced peak pressure gradient. Higher-class players used chair configurations associated with augmented pressure; however, classification status alone was not associated with pressure magnitude. Body mass index was negatively correlated with the static peak pressure gradient at levels approaching significance (p < .10). In conclusion, greater seat dump angles and backrest heights may provide pressure relief, whereas greater body mass index and therapeutic cushion use may reduce pressure gradients.

AbstractFunctional movement screen (FMS) has been used to establish normative data and determine potential injury risk for young adults and athletes, but there are few data in elementary school-age children. The purpose of this study was to establish fundamental values for the FMS in elementary school-age mini-basketball players. Secondary purposes were to examine relationships between functional movement patterns and age, peak height velocity (PHV), and body mass index (BMI), and to compare functional movement patterns between boys and girls and between individuals with and without a history of injury. The mean composite FMS score was 16.5 ± 2.2 (16.5 ± 2.4 for boys, 16.5 ± 1.7 for girls). The composite FMS score was positively correlated with age (r = .312) and negatively correlated with the BMI (r = − .371). However, the FMS score was not correlated with PHV or with PHV age. The FMS score was not different between boys and girls or between individuals who reported a previous injury and those who did not. However, boys in the mini-basketball teams performed better than girls on the trunk stability push-up and rotary stability tests. Age and the body mass index were significantly associated with better and poorer functional movement, respectively.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a basketball target rim on free-throw and field-goal shooting accuracy. The target rims employed in this study were different from regular rims as the apparatus that connects the target rim to the backboard was painted a neutral color. Subjects included all of the 1984–85 Eastern Washington University men's basketball players and the other players on 10 basketball teams who played games with the Eastern Washington University men's basketball team in the 1984–85 season. Practice statistics were kept in all EWU shooting situations, drills as well as scrimmages. Individual game statistics of the entire basketball game were made for the 10 games in which the target rims were used. A random selection of combined free-throw and field-goal shooting accuracy taken during the practice sessions showed that shooting percentage on the target rim was noticeably higher than the shooting percentage on the regular rim. The shooting accuracy of the EWU team and the visiting teams during game competition showed that accuracy of field-goal shooting on the target rim was significantly better than on the regular rim but not for free-throw accuracy. The target rim may improve shooting accuracy and influence total scoring in basketball.

Background: Asthma is ranked 16th among the leading causes of years lived with disability (YLD) and ranks 28th among the causes of global burden of disease (GBD). Various potential factors can cause asthma, which include body mass index (BMI) and gender. Purpose: This research aimed to determine the relationship between BMI and gender in people living with asthma in Indonesia. Methods: This research employed secondary data obtained from the Indonesian family life support (IFLS) 5th edition. This research used an observational analysis technique with a cross-sectional approach. The number of respondents in this research were 30,713. In this study, the BMI category was based on WHO’s classification for Asians. Data was analyzed using logistic regression tests and chi square. Statistical significance was set at a value of p<0.05. Results: As many as 17,175 respondents had a normal BMI range (56.92%), out of which the majority were women—16,001 respondents (52.10%). After controlling the other variables, statistical test results with logistic regression indicated that male respondents had 1.23 times the odds of experiencing asthma compared to females (adjusted odds ratio (AOR)=1.23; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.04–1.44; p=0.02). Again, after controlling the other variables, underweight respondents had 1.31 times the odds of experiencing asthma compared to respondents who had a normal BMI (AOR=1.31; 95%CI=1.07–1.59; p=0.01). Conclusion: A relationship between gender and the category of people who were underweight after determining their BMI could be established. Health counseling can be provided to help improve the respiratory conditions of these individuals.

The purpose of this paper was to determine the level of physical activity and healthy nutrition in children aged 3-6 years from Mitrovica. The research was attended by 94 children aged 3 - 6 years from two kindergartens in Mitrovica. As a parameter that measured the weight and height of the children,  it was calculated with the standardized procedure of Body Mass Index (BMI)  then was calculated according to the standard formula used by (Betterhealth, 2016). Also, after extracting other information through the questionnaire, a quantitative research was conducted through the parents of 94 children who were part of the measurements. A questionnaire was used to collect the data, which was previously translated and adapted into Albanian with permission to use it. The questionnaire was combined by three different questionnaires such as: the lifestyle questionnaire (Wilson et al., 2008), the physical activity questionnaire Pre-PAQ test (Dwyer et al., 2011) and the nutrition questionnaire (Rysha et al., 2017). The data collected during the research were placed in the statistical program SPSS version 21.0, and the presentation of this data was done through a descriptive analysis. The results that came from  this research showed that the effect of physical activity, lifestyle and nutrition have quite a high impact on body mass index in children. From the results we saw that the children of the two kindergartens from the municipality of Mitrovica did quite well in terms of physical activity, where in the questionnaires that were answered 89.4% of children were active more than an hour a day by walking and doing other activities. Also, the results regarding the questions in which they were asked about the time that children use the phone were at a satisfactory level, where a large percentage of parents, 77.7%, declared that their children did not use the phone  more than an hour a day. While in terms of nutrition, there have been many results which need more detailed analysis and to take preventive measures such as consumption of energy drinks, carbonated beverages, fast food, etc. From the measurement of children aged 3-4 years only one child turned out to be overweight with BMI = 18.7, while the rest came out with BMI with normal limits. As for children aged 4-5 years, one child turned out to be underweight with BMI = 12.4 and one obese with BMI = 21.9 and the others with BMI with normal limits. And out of children aged 5-6 years one child came out overweight with BMI = 17.7 and two others obese, one with BMI = 19.7 and the other BMI = 19.8 and the other children had normal weight (Betterhealth, 2016).

Abstract Background The incidence of obesity is increasing worldwide and is associated with numerous adverse health outcomes. Obesity was associated with more toxicity and worse prognosis in pediatric AML patients. On the other hand diabetic patients diagnosed with AML have multiple complications related to infection organ failure and chemotherapy side effects, Previous epidemiological studies in children have shown significant correlations in incidence between AML and DM in children. Aim To study Body-Mass Index (BMI) and uncontrolled DM impact on clinical outcome of adult AML pts. Methods A total of 187 adult pts with AML between 2002-2011 were enrolled. Retrospective data included demographics, labs, cytogenetics and outcome. LeukemiaNET Standardization (LNS), complete remission (CR), overall survival (OS) and relapse free survival (RFS) were obtained (Dohner E, Blood 2010). BMI of <18.5 defined as underweight, 25-30 was defined as overweight, while >30 as obesity. On the other hand Fasting blood glucose and Hemoglobin A1c were measured, DM severity was classified according to guidelines, as non diabetics (A1c)<5.7 and normal FBG<100, high risk for DM with (A1c) from (5.7 - 6.4) and uncontrolled DM (A1c) >6.5. Fischer's and Wilcoxon tests were used for comparatives between groups, cox proportional hazards and logistic regression for associations for OS/RFS and CR, Kaplan-Meier test for OS and RFS estimates via JMP software V9.0. IRB approval was obtained according to Helsinki declaration. Results The median age was 70 years, with 98 (52%) were men. 45 pts (24%) had complex cytogenetics, 28 pts (15%) had AML progressed from MDS. Median BMI was 28.7 (range 14.8-51.4). 10 (5%) were underweight, 34 (18%) had normal BMI, 59 (32%) were overweight, and 84 (45%) were obese. 149 pts (80%) were not Diabetic, 12 pts (6%) had high risk for DM, 26 pts (14%) uncontrolled DM. Overall Median OS was 23 weeks; 46 weeks in normal BMI, 30 weeks in overweight, 14 weeks in obese, 15 weeks in underweight, A according to DM subgroups; 24 weeks non-diabetics, 15 weeks had high risk for DM, 37 had uncontrolled DM. At diagnosis, BMI or Hemoglobin A1c classes were not associated with age, sex, white blood count (WBC), platelets, blasts, ECOG status, LNS; nor treatment toxicities. Even though median survival in weeks was lower in obese and underweight pts, Median OS and RFS were not different in univariate or across BMI subgroups (p=0.32 and 0.22) or Hemoglobin A1c subgroups (p=0.19 and 0.71) Conclusions BMI and uncontrolled DM did not show statistically significant correlation with LNS, relapse rates, OS or RFS. Abstract Extreme degrees of obesity may occur in association with hypothalamic tumors, usually after surgical intervention. This phenomenon has been reported to occur in as many as 25–75% of children undergoing extensive surgical extirpation of craniopharyngiomas (Cranio). Because less is known about the auxology of children with Cranio with milder alterations in growth, we undertook a 3-yr longitudinal analysis, using the KIGS database (Pfizer International Growth Database), to study their growth patterns and evolution of weight. We compared the effect of GH therapy on height, weight, and body mass index (BMI) in 199 prepubertal children with diagnosed Cranio treated by surgery and/or radiotherapy to two other groups of children with other causes of organic GH deficiency (OGHD): one with postsurgical and/or postirradiated OGHD (OGHD + S/I; n = 92) and the other with OGHD not due to Cranio and not having undergone either surgery or irradiation (OGHD − S/I; n = 85). At the start of GH therapy, 1) mean chronological (P &lt; 0.0001) and bone (P = 0.0002) ages were youngest in OGHD − S/I and oldest in OGHD + S/I; 2) the mean height sd score (SDS) was lowest in OGHD − S/I and comparably higher in the other two groups (P &lt; 0.0001); 3) mean weight and BMI SDS were greatest in Cranio and least in OGHD − S/I (both P &lt; 0.0001); and 4) the mean initial GH dose prescribed was highest in OGHD − S/I and comparable in the other two groups (P &lt; 0.0001). After 3 yr of GH therapy, 1) mean bone age remained youngest in OGHD − S/I and oldest in OGHD + S/I (P &lt; 0.0001); 2) mean height SDS was highest in Cranio and comparably lower in the other two groups (P = 0.0159); 3) mean weight and BMI SDS remained greatest in Cranio and least in OGHD − S/I (P &lt; 0.0001 and P = 0.0003, respectively); and 4) the mean GH dose remained highest in the OGHD − S/I group and least in the Cranio group (P = 0.0082). There were statistically significant increases within each group between the start of treatment and after 3 yr of GH therapy in height and weight, but not in BMI SDS. Lastly, after 3 yr of GH treatment, children in the Cranio group continued to have disproportionately heavier weight and higher BMI (with the greatest values in those with lower stimulated peak GH concentrations) compared with members of the other two groups, with no salutary effect of GH treatment on weight SDS and a mild improvement in BMI SDS. After S/I treatment, children with Cranio are disproportionately prone to varying degrees of weight gain compared with children with other forms of OGHD. In the present cohort of prepubertal children with Cranio, GH therapy induced excellent linear growth, but failed to have an ameliorative effect on weight gain and had only a slight beneficial effect on BMI gain. Because affected children may have resultant significant long-term medical morbidity and diminished quality of life, it is critical that the mechanism of this phenomenon be determined to devise helpful preventive or therapeutic interventions.

Background: Non-Celiac Wheat Sensitivity (NCWS) is still a largely undefined condition, due to the lack of a diagnostic marker. Few data are available about the nutritional characteristics of NCWS patients at diagnosis. Aims: To evaluate the proportion of NCWS patients who were underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese at diagnosis, and to search for possible correlations between their Body Mass Index (BMI) and other NCWS-related disease characteristics. Patients and Methods: The clinical charts of 145 NCWS patients (125 F, 20 M, mean age 37.1 ± 11.4 years), diagnosed between January 2012 and March 2018, were reviewed. As a comparison, 84 celiac disease (CD) patients (73 F, 11 M, mean age 39.8 ± 13.9 years) were evaluated. All NCWS diagnoses were based on a double-blind placebo-controlled wheat challenge (DBPCWC) method. Results: BMI distribution was similar in the NCWS (6.2% underweight and 15.2% obese subjects) and CD patients (6% underweight and 7.1% obese subjects). Underweight NCWS subjects were significantly younger and had a shorter clinical history than the overweight or obese ones. Unlike the other NCWS patients, none of them had a DQ2 and/or DQ8 haplotype. Overweight and obese NCWS patients were more frequently suffering from associated autoimmune diseases than the other BMI categories (P = 0.05). Compared to the CD controls, NCWS patients showed a higher frequency of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)-like (P = 0.01) and extraintestinal symptoms (P = 0.03) and a longer clinical history (P = 0.04), whereas weight loss was more frequent in CD (P = 0.02). Conclusions: NCWS patients showed a BMI distribution similar to CD patients. However, NCWS was found to be a heterogenous condition that regards BMI, and clinical characteristics differed between the underweight and overweight/obese patients.

  The current study intended to investigate the effects of a self-training program on shooting performance and kinematics of young basketball players. Fourteen male basketball players aged 16.64±.50 years, divided in control group (n=7) and experimental group (n=7), were assessed on free-throw, two-point and three-point shooting performance and on four kinematic parameters (release height, release angle, release speed and trajectory variability), before and after a five-week training program. During the five-week period, the experimental group accomplished a shooting training program that included 600 shots per week. Both groups maintained their regular basketball practice. The results show that the experimental group significantly increased their shooting performance on three-point (p<.05) and on free-throw (p<.05). Moreover, a significant decrease in three-point ball release angle (p<.05) and a significant increase in free-throw ball release height (p<.05) were observed in the experimental group, while the control group significantly increased the two-point ball release speed (p<.05). In conclusion, self-shooting basketball practice, in addition to formal practice, significantly improves shooting performance of young basketball players. In contrast, the reduced changes on the analysed kinematic parameters caused by the self-training program are most likely a consequence of the absence of external feedback during training process.  Resumen. El propósito del presente estudio fue investigar los efectos de un programa de autoentrenamiento en el rendimiento y cinemática de tiro de jóvenes jugadores de baloncesto. Catorce jugadores de baloncesto masculinos, de 16.64±0.50 años, divididos en grupo de control (n=7) y grupo experimental (n=7), fueron evaluados en el rendimiento de tiro libre, de dos puntos y de tres puntos y en cuatro parámetros cinemáticos (altura de liberación, ángulo de liberación, velocidad de liberación y variabilidad de la trayectoria), antes y después de un programa de entrenamiento de cinco semanas. Durante el período de cinco semanas, el grupo experimental realizó un programa de entrenamiento de tiro que incluía 600 tiros por semana. Ambos grupos mantuvieron su práctica regular de baloncesto. Los resultados muestran que el grupo experimental aumentó significativamente su rendimiento en el tiro de tres puntos (p<.05) y en el tiro libre (p<.05). Además, se observó, en el grupo experimental, una disminución significativa del ángulo de liberación en el tiro de tres puntos (p<.05) y un aumento significativo de la altura de liberación en el tiro libre (p<.05), mientras que el grupo de control aumentó significativamente la velocidad de liberación en el tiro de dos pontos (p<.05). En conclusión, la autopráctica de tiro en baloncesto, además de la práctica formal, mejora significativamente el rendimiento de tiro de los jugadores jóvenes. Por el contrario, los cambios reducidos en los parámetros cinemáticos analizados son probablemente una consecuencia de la ausencia de corrección externa durante el proceso de autoentrenamiento.
