The diagenetic history of the skeletal elements of Late Pleistocene-Holocene Ophiura sarsi from the shelf off northern Norway (Andfjorden, Malangsdjupet) is elucidated by comparison with natural and induced degradation of the skeletal elements of Recent ophiuroids (brittle stars) and asteroids (sea stars) from Danish waters. Dissolution features ("core-and-rind") in the trabeculae of fossil and Recent echinoderm stereom are initiated during death and early decay of organic tissue in the animals. The trabeculae have a polycrystal­line lamellar ultrastructure and lose their older central part during later stages of dissolution, which are dependant on undersaturation of the sea-water with regard to CaC03• The presence of undersaturated sea-water is supported by palaeoecological studies (Thomsen & Vorren 1984, 1986) implying oxygen deficient periods in the Late Pleistocene and an increased biogenic production in the Holocene. Pyrite framboids are situated in the secondary voids within the trabeculae and in the pore space of the stereom of the Late Pleistocene elements. No pyrite is observed within the polycrystalline lamellar ultrastructure of the trabeculae. The Late Pleistocene "pyritization" took place during oxygen deficient periods at the sediment-water interface or within the reduced zone of the topmost sediment.

The Fourth Memoir, published in my Zoological Researches and Illustrations, No. III. page 69, &c., having first made known the real nature of the Cirripedes , the key of which remained concealed in their metamorphosis, it might have been expected that some naturalist favourably situated to investigate the oceanic tribe of these animals, would have been the first to make the same discovery in regard to these, and thereby complete their natural history. It was scarcely to be expected that the honour of this discovery also should be reserved for the author, fixed to one spot, where none of them naturally exist, and are but casually thrown upon our shores by the waves of the Atlantic, attached to pieces of wreck, or brought into port fixed to the bottoms of ships returning from distant voyages. Fortunately, however, two ships of this description came into this harbour (Cork), one from the Mediterranean, the other from North America, which, not being sheathed with copper, had their bot­toms literally covered with Barnacles of the three genera of Lepas , Cineras , and Otion ; and having persons employed expressly for the purpose, numbers of these were brought alive in sea water, amongst which were many with the ova in various stages of their progress, and some ready to hatch, which they eventually did in prodigious numbers, so as to enable him to add the proof of their being, like the Balani, natatory Crusta­cea in their first stage , but of a totally different facies and structure; a circumstance which determines the propriety of the separation of the Cirripedes into two tribes, and evinces the sagacity of Mr. MacLeay in being the first to indicate that these two tribes, the Balani and Lepades , were not so closely related as generally supposed. The larvæ of the Balani , described in Memoir IV. under the external appearance of the bivalve Monoculi ( Astracoda ), have a pair of pedunculated eyes, more numerous and more completely developed members, approximating to those of Cyclops , and of the perfect Triton ; while, in the present type, or Lepades , the larva resembles some­what that of the Cyclops , which Müller, mistaking for a perfect animal, named Amymone , and which can be shown to he common to a great many of the Entomostraca ; or the resemblance is still more striking to that of the Argulus Armiger of Latreille, which, in fact, is but an Amymone furnished with a tricuspidate shield at the back.

A saline pond known as the ‘Salts Hole’ at Holkham on the north coast of Norfolk is situated between the pine-covered sand-hills and the fields that have been reclaimed for agriculture from pre-existing salt-marshes. It has a salinity of about 75% of that of sea water and supports a peculiar relict marine fauna. Except for the rare occurrence of flooding for a short period, as in the great storm of 1953, the pond has probably been cut off from the sea for about 250 years. It presents three problems: how it got its fauna and flora; how its marine character is maintained; and how the pond originated geographically. The fauna and flora, as described, show the pond as a refuge where various marine and brackish species have managed to maintain themselves and co-exist in water outside their normal and differing ranges of salinity. The main character of the pond is kept remarkably constant with respect to salinity, alkalinity, temperature and oxygenation. The pond is a study in ‘natural engineering’, constituting a natural marine aquarium with natural controls. It is fed near the level of high-water neap tide by continuous flow from a salt spring of very constant salinity supplied from water contained in the extensive coastal sands. Its only apparent artificial feature is the outlet controlled by a dam through a culvert into a ditch that conveys its water through the fields to the sea at Wells nearly two miles away. Search in the muniment room at Holkham Hall brought to light maps dating back to Elizabethan days which show the history of the Salts Hole.

Dr. Alleyne Nicholson, a palæontologist of no small repute, refers to this subject in his work on the ‘ Ancient Life History of the Earth,’ p. 34. He considers that the silica which has surrounded and infiltrated the fossils which flint contains, must have been deposited “from sea-water in a gelatinous condition, and subsequently have hardened.” Also that “the formation of flint may therefore be regarded as due to the separation of silica from sea-water, and its deposition round some organic body in a state of chemical change or decay.”

At Minamata Bay in Japan, more than 100 people lost their lives and many thousands more were permanently paralyzed from eating mercury contaminated fish. In the long history of water pollution, this was the first known case where the natural bioaccumulation (in fish) of a toxicant from an industrial wastewater killed a large number of human beings. The mercury, discharged from a factory, was deposited on the bottom of the Bay and has remained there since the 1950's. The fate of the mercury was traced by measuring 268 mercury concentrations in the surface sediments at Yatsushiro Sea (outside of the Bay) during the last 14 years. Twenty-four sampling stations were established to collect samples at the same location every year. Samples were analyzed for total mercury concentrations. The concentrations of mercury in the surface sediments at the Sea were not alarming. Only 33 samples exceeded a mercury concentration of 1 ppm. The dispersion of the mercury from the Bay, however, was clearly documented with the data. On average, 3.7 tons of the mercury was transported outside from the Bay every year. A decontamination project started in 1984 dramatically decreased the flow of mercury from the Bay to the Sea. A historic rainfall in 1982 also ‘purified' the surface sediments. Organic mercury concentration in the sea water was 5.1 ng/l while total mercury was 120 ng/l at the center of the Bay in 1985.

The function and management of the reservoir are fully dependent on the past history of the average weather. With the increase of global warming, there is an increase in temperature in the atmosphere, which results in melting ice in the polar region, increasing sea water labels, etc. These have bad impacts on our environment like floods and drought. It is difficult to predict the weather due to rapid changes in the climates. Then the offseason rainwater can be used to manage the crisis of the uncertain situation. This paper introduces a novel fuzzy model to redistribute reservoir water for different purposes based on the offseason rain intensity. The model has been developed for the period of the non-monsoon season with the set of parameters like inflow, outflow, rain intensity, water demand among the power generation, civil utilization, harvesting, industrial production, etc. The model has been optimized to obtain water distribution based on requirements for different purposes and maximize revenues.

In the paper the rheological properties of crude oil of White Tiger oil-field (Vietnam) and its emulsion with sea-water, including measurement results and analytical approximation formulae for wide range of pressure, temperature and water concentration, are presented. As it is known, the crude oil of White Tiger oil-field is a high-paraffin and high-viscous oil. At the low temperature (T ≤ 40°C) it behaves as non-Newtonian fluid of Bingham-Shvedov group. Therefore, beside the effective viscosity, the effective dynamic shear stress is also measured and approximated. The rheological properties of crude oil and emulsion of crude oil and water are also measured and approximated for the case when the mixture contains 0.1% chemical reagent ES-3363.

One of the most massive red tides at the Odessa Bay was observed in September October 2020. It was caused by a toxic dinoflagellate Lingulodinium polyedrum (Stein) Dodge. The maximum abundance (56.1 x 106 cells L-1) of L. polyedrum was registered at the Odessa port area on October 6 when a water temperature and a salinity were 19.7°C and 14.3 ‰ respectively. The red tide was so huge and dense that the water glowed at night due to the bioluminescence characteristic of this species. The article briefly describes the history of the study of L. polyedrum in this area and provides a detailed morphological description with original photographs of this species sampled from bloom. We associate the appearance of the red tide with an increased temperature of sea water and air, a high content of nutrients, the presence of viable L. polyedrum cysts, and a slight decrease in salinity in the bay during the period of a mass development of the species in autumn of 2020. The red tide was accompanied by Protoperidinium steini, P. divergens, Prorocentrum cordatum, P. minimum, P. micans, Gonyaulas scrippsae, Diplopsalis lenticula, Azadinium spinosum, Dinophysis rotundata, D. acuminata, Oblea rotunda, Scrippsiella trochoidea, Ceratium furca.
