Background: The purpose of this study was to determine if interprofessional skills, attitudes, and behaviours could be learned during an austere medicine educational activity where interprofessionalism remained within the informal and hidden curriculum. Methods and Findings: We used a mixed-methods approach to examine the potential acquisition of interprofessional competencies during wilderness medicine educational events. Thirty-four participants, over two events, completed interprofessional learner contracts, audio diary entries between patient scenarios, and the Interprofessional Collaborative Competency Attainment Survey (ICCAS) using a retrospective pre-test/post-test design. Audio diary entries showed the reflection that took place between scenarios during the orienteering portion of the event and the adjustments toward interprofessionalism that took place. Both the survey and audio diaries confirmed that participants perceived an improvement of their interprofessional competencies after the WildER Med event. Conclusions: The outcomes confirm that interprofessional competencies can be developed during a learning event such as WildER Med, where the interprofessional curriculum is hidden. Austere medicine, which is at the base of this learning event, represents an opportunity for the further understanding and exploration of interprofessional education.

The current literature documents a need for assertiveness training for clients with a psychiatric illness, in order to address this need, a programme was designed and implemented to provide clients with practical techniques to enable them to communicate in a more effective, assertive manner. The frames of reference for the programme were the model of human occupation and social teaming theory. Data were collected over a 2-year period from 33 clients with a psychiatric illness who participated in a 7-week training programme. The investigation incorporated a prospective one-group, pre-test/post-test design. The Rathus assertiveness schedule and the Rosenberg self-esteem scale were used to measure changes in assertiveness and self-esteem. A t-test analysis of the pre-test and post-test scores attained by group participants on both scales indicated a statistically significant increase in their level of assertive behaviour and self-esteem. A brief review of the pertinent literature and a description of the assertiveness training programme are provided. Programme evaluation results and recommendations for further research are also discussed.

This article reports on 95 women who were referred to an outpatient psychiatry clinic for group therapy for adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse. Criteria for exclusion in group therapy are outlined and the format of the group therapy is described. Those who completed the groups are compared to dropouts. The group's effectiveness was evaluated using measures of psychiatric symptomatology (SCL 90), depression (Zung Self-Report Depression Scale), and self-esteem (Texas Social Behaviour Inventory) with a pre/post test design. Clients' evaluation questionnaires were also used. Group therapy was found to be effective in reducing symptomatology and change was in the expected direction in terms of depression and self-esteem.
